Suggestions which could improve these forums.

These forums should be a valuable resource, but they are being neutered by a combination of poor input from posters, and poor administration from eBay. I think this is why their use has been decining so noticeably in the last few months. I have a few suggestions which I believe could help things run a little better in 2024. Please feel free to add any more. The first four are small changes eBay themselves could make.

1. Stop posters from posting in different or larger fonts/colours. This can give the impression to newer members that these posters are somehow “special” and brings attention to their posts. (This is of course, what the poster wants, but there is no guarantee that the advice given will be useful - often it is not.)

2. Get rid of the silly ranking system for posters, or at least change how the ranks are assigned. Currently, some of the least reliable posters have high ranking positions, simply because they post so often. As a stopped clock is right twice a day, they do pick up “likes”, but more because they post so much, than because of the quality of their responses. (Maybe the number of “likes” should be divided by the number of posts they submit - this might stop some of their silly “look at me” behaviour.)

3. eBay employees often only become involved to dampen down conflict. I believe they must allow a little more dissent, as much of the advice being given is plainly wrong, and can considerably worsen situations which are already awkward for the original poster.

4. If eBay employees are going to get involved, they should read the WHOLE thread before jumping in with both feet. Likewise, if they are offering advice, they must make sure it is correct, and they should be able to anticipate further questions, and deal with these too. Otherwise, all they are doing is killing threads, often with irrelevant, wrong, or unhelpful comments.

...and there are things posters can do. You don’t NEED to post in every conversation. If you have nothing to add, just move on; we won’t miss you. Save it for the threads where you do have something constructive to add. If you do decide to contribute, read the whole thread; if you don't, you're possibly just cluttering the thread up with unnecessary repetitions. And if someone asks for comments from those with experience of a situation, respect that, and don’t just chip in with your guess at what SHOULD happen.

I'm sure there are others. I haven't even mentioned business/private accounts, but that obviously needs some attention, although perhaps not as much as it gets!

Definitely it would be good to have the business section just for those on business accounts.

I think that could also help those businesses on private accounts too. They can view the posts and if some genuinely didn't realise they should be on a business account, they can find information.

It's notable that, in her otherwise pretty comprehensive contribution, katie@eBay made no mention of this hot potato, undoubtedly the most talked-about topic on these boards, worming its way into almost every thread. Not even a kiddie-on "we take these situations very seriously". Yet another indication, that although many on here have a bee in their bonnet about it, eBay couldn't care less.

I think we all want to see some real clarity about this (ie. What are they doing about it) as well as EDDs and the current incarnation of Ebay's search engine.  Seems to me those are the 3 biggest issues that need addressing and make up a significant chunk of the forum's posts.

Hi everyone,

Just to answer in relation to the Private to Business account topic. I agree it can be helpful to notify someone that they may be registered on the wrong account. As it has been mentioned, they may not be aware.

From that point on I would ask that the community guidelines are followed, this includes off-topic and being respectful. Our teams work on this in the background to ensure that accounts that need to be moved are upgraded. This is a public platform, so it would be inappropriate for me to discuss individual members accounts.

I have also been sending on feedback from you all about the help page related to this and the reporting process. I am unable to comment further on this, but did want to address it as much as I could here.

To add, this thread is in relation to community feedback and how the forums could be improved. I do not want this thread to be derailed into a debate about private and business. Please keep this in mind.

Thanks,

Katie

Thank you for addressing this issue Katie

Thank you for your continued feedback here in relation to community forum suggestions.

If you would like to open a thread to discuss other eBay topics, please do so.

Further off-topic replies here will mean we will need to close for new replies, and I would like to keep it open for community forum suggestions if possible.

Thanks,

Katie

Re: Suggestions which could improve these forums.

EBay to stop the 80% discounting selling fees and charge a more realistic fess of say 5%. That would save 50 different thread each month asking where they are and why haven't I got the offer.

Ebay to reduce number of listings a "private" seller can have each month. 30 should do it..meaning it's no good for businesses, then there won't be loads of comments about business trading as a private seller.

ebay to remove the best offer facility...reducing all the comments about having to enter card details up front.
Will pop back in later with a few more. Happy New Year everyone.

"ebay to remove the best offer facility...reducing all the comments about having to enter card details up front."

Very doubtful as they are also considering it for auctions and before you can bid.

We're not seeing this happen. ebay's failure to meaningfully deal with the issue means we have an area of conflict on these boards that doesn't need to exist. Business sellers have a perfect right to call out misregistered private sellers and I can understand genuine private sellers getting hacked off with . The problem isn't us, business or private sellers, it is ebay's handling of the problem and it is for ebay to fix it.

The subject will not go away until ebay does.

Re: Suggestions which could improve these forums.

As for these boards I used to enjoy the old powerseller board, but that was effectively killed off with the move to experienced sellers situated in a dusty corner of the boards.

Re: Suggestions which could improve these forums.

The forums are not a business product or service: they are a kind of self-help group for eBay users. The content is provided free. If you need better information, there might be commercial specialists who can supply it for a fee.

Re: Suggestions which could improve these forums.

One thing that I notice on the forums is that there are often issues reported where things are going wrong on the website and they might be spread across 'Seller Central' and the 'Business Seller Board'. Why not move any thread like that to 'Technical Issues' and have somebody on the web development team monitor the forum daily to pick up on any issues and report on progress. There are quite a few users on the forums who take the time to give detailed explanations of when and how things are going wrong and it would seem  like a better way for ebay to take advantage of that knowledge and get things resolved more quickly for everybody's benefit.

Re: Suggestions which could improve these forums.

Ultimately as we are customers of eBay, a little customer service would be great.

If I paid for a service and it had a fault which was costing me money I'd not wish to wait over 2 months for it to be fixed, then for it still not to be fixed, and sadly my requests for any updates be ignored or told if we havent updated you that means nothing has changed. Sadly stuff has changed but staff being either too lazy to read up on the issue or not having any idea what they were talking about.

Having worked in customer service prior to do this full time, I'd own an issue, follow up on it and let the customer know even if it was just to say sorry we havent heard anything back but I just want you to understand that I know you've either paid £x amount or losing out but I am trying my best, silence isnt good.

If I offered the customer service to my customers that eBay offers me, I'd not have an account.

Re: Suggestions which could improve these forums.

A positive section of the forum under business sellers would be nice. It would have to be heavily moderated. It's easy to come here with optimism and would like to hear some good experiences but end up leaving in fear.

Also a sandbox for business sellers too. A place where we can go and try out different scenarios etc. I've never made a return on eBay. What do the buyers see? How are the postage options provided to them? Does Royal Mail collection get offered to them? Many things (promotions, newsletters, coupons) that I have no idea what the buyer sees. I think business sellers should be offered a sandbox, thank you.
