Hi,
Reluctantly, I will be ending my listings by the end of the week, but will probably be dragged kicking and screaming into simple delivery. Having created my first simple delivery listing as a test, just a couple of questions. I have thankfully excluded Evri from my listing by using the 'postage preferences' in my account.
Looking at the postage options in the listing once live, available to the buyer are two options, standard tracked and express tracked delivery. It doesn't specify what these are. Other than select parcel size, I was at no point able to select a royal mail postage service like previously. Is it, hopefully due to the compensation level, RM Tracked 48 and Tracked 24 ? Please not second class signed for, lol.
With the international shipping, i have not opted for international postage in the postage options tab, but confusingly the 'excluded locations' tab further down the page is still showing and there are no excluded locations filled in. Furthermore, does anyone know if you can include international postage for some listings, and opt out for others ? Previously, it was either a blanket yes or no.
Thanks to anyone who takes the time to reply and feel free to ask any other questions in the thread if you want to. Simple delivery, unfortunately is here.
Thanks

It’s positively barmy

"If the buyer entered the wrong town or postcode, you can cancel the transaction and ask the buyer to repurchase the item with the correct address"
There are (at least) two problems with this.
1. How would you know if the address was wrong?
2. How would this work with an auction sale?

presumabl they require proof of posting
you dont get if you put in a sack or pillar box

we no longer have a post office in the village and i dont drive have just had a hip and knee replacement
and have other dissability issues which limit my mobility ( pensioner )
i have for the last year or so used only royal mail pick up service mainly tracked 48 with free label delivery
which it appears costs more under ebay SD
however looking at SD find the services offered are considerably ( in some instances ) more expensive for smaller items which has led me to start ending dozens of listings
i think after 13 years on ebay my days are numbered

True to the extent of handing it over at a post office and requesting a free posting receipt but this is only one location and one method of receiving a postal receipt, if you follow this link to the Royal Mail website, a full explanation of how, when and where you can obtain a postal receipt is explained
You will see that the post office receipt is only one avenue to obtain a receipt - Not all receipts are paper some are only available on the app including those issued when posted in a postal box or sack.
This brings you to How SD tracking for Royal Mail provides standard protection and when the enhanced protection paid for by the buyer kicks in
You are responsible for the package up until it is in 'transit' when ebay take over the responsibility until it is scanned delivered.
This is what ebay say in the SD terms and conditions :
The item will be in transit from the point it has been scanned into the carrier’s network until it has been marked as delivered by the carrier.
It is clear that a postal receipt serves no purpose in itself when dealing with ebay -
ebay claim to offer protection entirely on the scan into the carrier's network - in this case Royal Mail.
You also will not be able to use the postal receipt to claim loss or damage with SD because ebay use business account postal services which generally do not provide compensation this is agreed to lower the price for the business account holder.
Ebay to make sure buyers are able to receive compensation for lost or damaged goods whilst in transit - (not before or after) and to make it simple and easy to administer use the carrier API to update the tracking notification
Once the tracking on either the carrier's tracking portal or on the ebay tracking system updates to show that the package has entered the carrier network then this is the trigger for ebay to take responsibility for lost or damaged items in transit.
Whilst in transit if the item is damaged or becomes lost in the carrier network ebay compensate the customer not you the seller - funding for this comes from the buyer fees which a lot of members seem to think is a greed tax by ebay !
So in summary the standard mbg applies up to the scan that the item has entered the carriers network and continues for item not described after it has been delivered - during transit ebay provide protection to the buyer for loss or damage not the seller.
The postal receipt plays no part in this process - a scan shpwing the item entering and exiting the carrier network does !

A lot of large businesses pocket the difference when they have agreed a deal with a specific carrier.

I made this exact point on a thread yesterday 😞

Yeah I saw it - I have been making this point several times over the past few days but for some reason some sellers seem to believe that you must have a post office recipt for ebay Simple Delivery - in reality the scan saying 'item received at xyz DO ' is the important one.
You can get a postal receipt for any trackable item whereever it is officially deposited but it will not help - I have come to the conclusion unnecesssary queueing is definately a pastime some sellers enjoy !

Also those that run my nearest post office quite often close down for a week or two as they go back home abroad to see relatives. Thats another issue 😞
IF we were that way inclined (and we are not) and really tried to stick to all the demands SD make.......there is zero chance of us being able to do it. Our whole life cannot evolve around Ebay.
The naughty side of me wants to wait until later this month and list using Evri. My gut feeling is that i will be told to post it at my local Tesco Evri site (200 yards from home) and which closed down a few months back lol

one would assume ebay therfore would claim from the carrier
in which case buyers protection fees would be pocketed by ebay

Just an update, as I started this thread. I'm in the process of ending all my listings for now, till I decide what to do going forward. Plus I'll have to buy a printer too, lol. Out of curiosity, I edited one of my listings to simple delivery. I opted out of Evri, so Royal mail only and selected seller pays, on a large letter item up to 750g. I pay a flat fee of £2.74, which is fair enough. Looking at my listing, the buyer can accept the standard tracked delivery, at no further cost to them, or pay for express tracked delivery for an extra £3.50.
This annoyed me, I have a three day dispatch time, I am not a business and life gets in the way. One of the reasons I selected sellers pays was, so I thought, was to maintain some sort of control and to avoid the express postage option. If they pay express postage, they are in a hurry and expect immediate dispatch in most cases ! I had a situation just a few months back, where someone bought an item after eleven at night and I was covering the postage. By the time I logged in the following evening at about 9pm, he had sent four messages, escalating from asking when it was going to be dispatched, to livid that I hadn't sent it out yet, to stating that he was going to open a case with ebay ! All within a period of about 16 hours. I politely asked him to contact ebay customer services, cancelled his order and blocked him.
For now, I will be ending all my listings by the end of the day.

Plus, further thinking about it and replying to my own post, lol. I'm paying £2.74 postage, if the buyer wants express delivery he pays a further £3.50 at his end. This comes to £6.74, for just a large letter item, under 750g. Royal mail tracked 24 only costs £3.60 at the moment ?
05-04-2025 12:11 PM
£6.24 I mean, lol.

The point about getting a receipt (for me) is that I have instant proof (for me) that my item has been correctly scanned into the RM system. If you post a SD item at a post office do you get an instant electronic notification that the item has been scanned, or do you just have to rely on the RM tracking which might not be updated for several minutes or even hours? When exactly do you get to see this scan saying 'item received at xyz DO ' ?

I would not assume that because often when large companies negotiate a very cheap deal with couriers its often in the contract that they will not compensate them for lost or damaged items.
It may be that the BPF fee is to offset this.

'.......negotiate a very cheap deal with couriers its often in the contract that they will not compensate them for lost or damaged items.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't believe it is.
If the BPF had anything to do with 'loss-or-damage in the post' protection, ebay would have been shouting that from the rooftops.
I don't reckon they'd pass up the opportunity to trumpet *anything* that would give them a reason to introduce the BPF.
As it is, they've only been shouting about things that were already there, to try and 'spin' the BPF into something new and wonderful....
05-04-2025 6:22 PM
from what i can see for many Simple delivery actually works out more expensive
05-04-2025 6:53 PM
I assume they've negotiated a cheap deal with RM, then made up their own prices which are more expensive than RM so that they can pay compensation for loss or damage.
None of this benefits ebay sellers or buyers. I want to be able to select a service which gives adequate compensation for whatever I'm sending and keep the postage as cheap as possible for buyers.

It is the small independent post offices that are losing out on this SD because they work on a commission, where as larger post offices staff get a wage so small post offices will be closing ,it is really awful .

I hate to be the bearer of bad news - The Post Office have taken on EVRI as a drop off point, printing labels etc - seems like you need to tag along on the fortnight family holiday !
