Fee Changes have KILLED Private buying & Selling

As a buyer and seller on here for 22 years, I'd like to congratulate the people who came up with this buyer protection scam. Let me refresh you with the original announcement and I Quote:

"At the end of 2024, we changed our fee structure, making it free to sell for private sellers. We know that fees are one of the biggest barriers to selling and we've seen a great reaction to the change, with an increase in the number of new sellers coming to eBay to list and sell. "

Totally agree with this part.

" As well as being a positive change for our private sellers, it’s also great news for buyers, as it means more of the things they love - and it's always good news for business sellers when there are more buyers on the platform. "

Agreed again, Completely as the seller's fee was an issue for years especially when they added the extra fee for postage costs too. True some sellers were charging too much postage, but the simple solution for that was not to purchase anything from them.

"Starting from 4 February, Buyer Protection will be live to give buyers more peace of mind when shopping on ebay.co.uk. To minimise any potential disruption on our platform"

This is where it started going downhill fast. If like me as a buyer and seller, sending items sold or bought tracked through whichever service you use, why do you need the extra buyer protection? You are already protected through E-Bay's money back guarantee.

"By removing barriers for private sellers and making it free to sell and simpler to list, we’ve seen many more sellers join the platform to bring buyers the unique inventory that they love. Buyer Protection is the next step, to ensure they keep coming back."

Wrong on so many levels, for example the ability for a seller to send a combined invoice to a buyer who has bought multiple items from them has disappeared. It seems with the conversations I've recently had with the unhelpful customer service, that the buyers are expected to pay the total amount so E-Bay can maximise their fee, and hope that the seller will be kind enough to issue a partial refund for the difference, I don't know about you but that seems like a massive barrier for private sellers and buyers alike.

"As part of Buyer Protection, starting from 4 February, a fee will be included in the item price when purchasing from private sellers, paid for by the buyer to eBay. Buyers will only ever pay what they see, so there are no surprises at checkout. "

Wrong, The fee will be ON the item price which is 4% + 75p PER ITEM. So no wonder E-Bay have removed the combined tool, otherwise they would lose out on the fee.

"Starting from 4 February, UK-based private sellers will also be paid after item delivery. Funds will typically be available in your eBay balance two calendar days after delivery confirmation.

OK I don't agree with this method but it's not a big issue, Unless the service you've used doesn't update their system to say it's been delivered. So you've sent the items tracked, paid for that service, and E-Bay will only pay out if they have a complete turnaround. If not they withhold money your owed until they decide to pay it out.

"Using tracked delivery services can also provide a better customer experience for your shoppers, and for you, with sellers seeing a 50% decrease, on average, in buyer complaints and queries when using tracked delivery."

I personally only send items I sell tracked, No exceptions, and I've received items that were listed as tracked but they weren't, especially from business's who have never provided a tracking number.

In Conclusion, I'd like to say that my recent experience's buying and selling since these changes have not been great, and nobody from E-Bay is communicating with private sellers or buyers about the many many complaints since the changes.

In the last 31 days my sales numbers are down 20% and I've bought multiple items from a private seller who I have bought from before these changes and they can't send a combined invoice like before because the option has been removed.

So Congratulations E-Bay, for a Quick Buck, you've KILLED Private Buying & Selling on this platform, and unless you reset to the system before this buyer protection racket was applied, then you are going to see your revenue from private buyers decline drastically if it isn't already.

This is just my opinion, you will have yours but I think I speak for many private buyers & sellers that expressed the same opinion.

If it's ebay's announcements you're referring to, the rule of thumb is: if the announcement seems self-explanatory, you probably haven't read it carefully enough.

Re: Fee Changes have KILLED Private buying & Selling

Seems clear ebay pushing private sellers to go business . So they will lose even more market share than

the significant amount they have already lost....or maybe there will be even more tedious changes by them

to try to reclaim what they have lost. Unfortunately particularly for private sellers other online selling options

in my experience are ineffective and frequently involve fraud attempts.

Re: Fee Changes have KILLED Private buying & Selling

My wife works for Royal mail sorting, frequently tracking system does not work, parcels now

sometimes up  to 30K,I did not think this legal. As a pensioner going business seller I would than have to pay national insurance 4, every week sales or not.

I now list buyer collects or arranges collection size and weight sent after purchase, buyer  can decide who handles the delivery after purchase, it will be their risk subject to adequate packing. Royal mail or Evri only option with simple delivery ,no way! I will no doubt  find out if this is allowed. Should ebay decide I have to move to business seller will finish selling. Seems clear ebay pushing for private to move to business selling.

Either that or leave the platform, because "we don't want your low value / social history stuff any more".

Re: Fee Changes have KILLED Private buying & Selling

Get plenty of fraud attempts on eBay lately to be honest too. That already makes me anxious selling any of my possessions on eBay, especially since most stuff I sell are usually computer parts I’ve out grown or upgraded from and not cheap. The rule and fee changes are the icing on the cake signalling it’s time to leave.

Re: Fee Changes have KILLED Private buying & Selling

TBF I sell high value low volume most of the time. I  am a computer enthusiast and a software developer so I enjoy trying out new hardware and will sell on often if I decide not to upgrade at a small loss. It’s something I’ve enjoyed doing for a number of years as I get to try the latest stuff for my home set up and it costs me little given I can recoup most of the cost by selling it on. But that’s now out the window with these changes. Most years I’m probably quite a bit over that 1K limit but have never made any profit from it.

Re: Fee Changes have KILLED Private buying & Selling

I’m a business seller, and I’ve been closely tracking sales activity in the main category I trade in since the introduction of fee-free selling for private sellers. I was interested to see how this change would affect the seller dynamic on the platform and what impact it might have on my business sales.

Since that change on the 1st October, from that day exactly, I’ve been keeping a monthly record of the running total of both active and sold listings using the data shown in the left-hand panel under the search term “painting” within the Paintings category, noting the numbers shown for both UK business and private sellers.

Based on this data, if the numbers shown by eBay for active and sold listings are correct, I can confirm that private seller sales for that particular search have dropped by approximately 25% since the peak at the start of February. The running total for private sales on the 3rd Feb was 22,190 sales compared to 16,640 sales shown today. In contrast, business seller sales in the same period have seen only a modest decline of about 3%. Since February, if the numbers shown are correct, all the private seller sold gains on the site have not only been lost, they’ve actually reversed to a lower amount just prior the fee-free listings which I recorded at 19,688 sales on the 1st October.

So to be clear, if the sold figures being shown by eBay are correct, private sellers are not imagining the drop in sales. The figures show a real and measurable decline, at least for the search "painting" in the paintings category. I was genuinely shocked by the most recent figures and how sharp a decline it was.

Initially, late last year I saw strong growth in both private listings and sales. Private buyers were coming to the site, or more likely it appeared a number of business sellers transferred listings to private accounts, approx. 10,000 listings as far as I could tell, since private listings increased by a similar amount . Another mention, is that the 10,000 active business listings lost/transferred to private accounts, have not been recovered on the business accounts. The figures were 90,259 active business listings at the start of fee-free selling, vs 77,620 active business listings today. While active private listings were 124,688 vs 133,305 today.
