As a buyer and seller on here for 22 years, I'd like to congratulate the people who came up with this buyer protection scam. Let me refresh you with the original announcement and I Quote:
"At the end of 2024, we changed our fee structure, making it free to sell for private sellers. We know that fees are one of the biggest barriers to selling and we've seen a great reaction to the change, with an increase in the number of new sellers coming to eBay to list and sell. "
Totally agree with this part.
" As well as being a positive change for our private sellers, it’s also great news for buyers, as it means more of the things they love - and it's always good news for business sellers when there are more buyers on the platform. "
Agreed again, Completely as the seller's fee was an issue for years especially when they added the extra fee for postage costs too. True some sellers were charging too much postage, but the simple solution for that was not to purchase anything from them.
"Starting from 4 February, Buyer Protection will be live to give buyers more peace of mind when shopping on ebay.co.uk. To minimise any potential disruption on our platform"
This is where it started going downhill fast. If like me as a buyer and seller, sending items sold or bought tracked through whichever service you use, why do you need the extra buyer protection? You are already protected through E-Bay's money back guarantee.
"By removing barriers for private sellers and making it free to sell and simpler to list, we’ve seen many more sellers join the platform to bring buyers the unique inventory that they love. Buyer Protection is the next step, to ensure they keep coming back."
Wrong on so many levels, for example the ability for a seller to send a combined invoice to a buyer who has bought multiple items from them has disappeared. It seems with the conversations I've recently had with the unhelpful customer service, that the buyers are expected to pay the total amount so E-Bay can maximise their fee, and hope that the seller will be kind enough to issue a partial refund for the difference, I don't know about you but that seems like a massive barrier for private sellers and buyers alike.
"As part of Buyer Protection, starting from 4 February, a fee will be included in the item price when purchasing from private sellers, paid for by the buyer to eBay. Buyers will only ever pay what they see, so there are no surprises at checkout. "
Wrong, The fee will be ON the item price which is 4% + 75p PER ITEM. So no wonder E-Bay have removed the combined tool, otherwise they would lose out on the fee.
"Starting from 4 February, UK-based private sellers will also be paid after item delivery. Funds will typically be available in your eBay balance two calendar days after delivery confirmation.
OK I don't agree with this method but it's not a big issue, Unless the service you've used doesn't update their system to say it's been delivered. So you've sent the items tracked, paid for that service, and E-Bay will only pay out if they have a complete turnaround. If not they withhold money your owed until they decide to pay it out.
"Using tracked delivery services can also provide a better customer experience for your shoppers, and for you, with sellers seeing a 50% decrease, on average, in buyer complaints and queries when using tracked delivery."
I personally only send items I sell tracked, No exceptions, and I've received items that were listed as tracked but they weren't, especially from business's who have never provided a tracking number.
In Conclusion, I'd like to say that my recent experience's buying and selling since these changes have not been great, and nobody from E-Bay is communicating with private sellers or buyers about the many many complaints since the changes.
In the last 31 days my sales numbers are down 20% and I've bought multiple items from a private seller who I have bought from before these changes and they can't send a combined invoice like before because the option has been removed.
So Congratulations E-Bay, for a Quick Buck, you've KILLED Private Buying & Selling on this platform, and unless you reset to the system before this buyer protection racket was applied, then you are going to see your revenue from private buyers decline drastically if it isn't already.
This is just my opinion, you will have yours but I think I speak for many private buyers & sellers that expressed the same opinion.

I ask again, is this even legal?
I’m sure that eBay’s legal department will have been all over it and it will be legal - whether morally right is another matter.
But eBay are just the same as any large business nowadays - they no longer have customers, they only have consumers.
Customers are people, consumers are just numbers.

I know that this is hypothetical, the amount of the refund in my case was not large, but if it had been and eBay had taken it from my bank account, I could have been relying on that money to pay my bills, which would have failed, leaving my credit rating damaged. I really don’t think the ramifications of this system have been properly thought out.

They simply don’t care about their customers anymore. That much is evident in the way this system has been forced upon us. Only a mass exodus may make them think twice about it, unless they’d rather we left. I really don’t know anymore.
it will be interesting to see their profits next year vs last. They can’t seriously be thinking they will earn more with a system like this.

I'm totally with you here, and NOW ....... simple delivery!!
It's been enforced on my account this week and is already causing headaches.
I was charged for a label that I didn't use because a buyer purchased two items from me which I posted in one parcel. As soon as I entered the tracking number for the second item, a charge was made for the label (actually entering the tracking number was an issue on its own as there is no option to do this now. I had Customer Services send me a link to do it.)
Today I took a parcel to the Post Office and the wrong label was on it. The parcel was a medium size but the label was for a small size. It's now vital to enter the correct dimensions and weight when creating a listing as there is now no option to change it as the label is generated automatically.
I realise that compensation for loss or damage is now covered by Ebay which is great but the prices charged for the labels are all over the place. I have always offered free postage but I think I will just let the buyers pay from now on.
I do hope this settles down and that I receive a refund for my unused label. Customer Services have said that I will (I've kept the chat script for this!!)

Yes, I agree. I noticed this last weekend that the Simple Delivery system is being forced on me. This, apparently, is being done to streamline operations and make things "simpler" for sellers. Unfortunately, for some of us it has made things much more complicated. Call me old-fashioned, but I'm not in possession of a printer or a digital phone so when I'm sent the QR code, I'm in a bit of a bind. The only option is to buy a printer or a digital phone (or pop over to my local library and get a printout), which I'm not prepared to do as I don't sell that much being a private seller. Yesterday I got in touch with CS at eBay and was told that I could just cancel the simple delivery option after the buyer has purchased the product and get a refund. Is this simple? No, definitely not. I am trying to list my items in the traditional way but the eBay system is only giving me the Simple Delivery option which is a real nuisance. Thus far I haven't sold anything using this new system, but when I do I'll certainly be requesting an immediate refund. The eBay agent said she would forward my concerns onto management and get back to me with their response. I hope they're listening as there are many private sellers out there are not happy about Simple Delivery (or the new BPF).

True ebay is officially the biggest joke of an online selling platform now

One other thing: When I spoke with the eBay CS agent yesterday, I registered another complaint. I told her that under the old system I was in control of my sales from beginning to end. However, under the new Simple Delivery system eBay has taken away that control by placing itself in the middle and acting as a 'middle-man'. This of course makes the whole selling process more anonymous and business-like, preventing buyers giving their customers that personal touch that has traditionally made selling on eBay so much fun.

Don't bother keeping the script, CS are well known for coming up with six impossible things before breakfast, all self-contradictory. Oh frabjous day.
Elsewhere on these forums people have said that you can get your unused label refunded if you listed with free postage. If you didn't, then the buyer is deemed to have paid for the label and will receive the refund. Seems morally indefensible to me, but be aware.
I doubt this will settle down. Other platforms must be rubbing their hands with glee. The problem with chopping your foot off with an angle grinder is that it's very difficult to sew it back on.

I used to buy a lot of low priced items, sometimes lucky enough to snap something up for 99p+P&P, now prices are all over the place, rarely do I see anything for 99p anymore and I can't justify in my own mind a near doubling in price for no value at all, especially as I know that 'Buyer Protection' existed before overcharging the customers directly started. I haven't abandoned ebay entirely yet, but my purchases must have reduced by over 90% this year because of this.

This is just a byers/seller premium, this is what has killed the prices same as any other Auction House. Although not as high as outside auctions of 20 to 30%. So in real terms selling on eBay is not "Free"
