EBay it’s the end for private sellers.

Well finally after changing the format of their selling platform it seems every couple of weeks you have come up with the ultimate level of stupidity with this latest total ridiculous set of changes. Nobody is going to wait what could be weeks to be paid for a item they have sold who ever dreamt up this idea much be so far from reality as needing to push every part time seller off the site. I knew when they came up with the idea of free selling it wouldn’t be long before the idiots that run eBay came up with totally and ridiculous idea to claw back the money they have lost the whole senior management team at EBay must seat round a table all wearing clown costumes saying what is the most stupid idea we can come with to really get rid of half of our customers and the biggest clown wins with this idea and all the other yes people follow. Well I had started selling a few bits again but never again and will not be using EBay again to sell anything it has become a total joke of a company I hope your poor and flawed decisions finally catch up with this once great place to buy and sell has become a total joke.

@storage.boutique And to be fair to @bittyboy (who I didn’t always agree with!) he was always very open about his passion selling antique locks. But he’s moved on from these forums months ago.

Looks like he's moved on from ebay entirely.

Sold items.    0

Active listings.    0

And who can blame him ?

He's been on the forums in the past couple of hours.  I guess too busy elsewhere at present, but I'm sure you'll get the apology eventually.

I know, I've looked at his profile every time I've come across one of his other replies today.

I'm just as sure he won't make any sort of apology.  His sort never do, they just slink away  --  until the next time.

I may be wrong about this individual seller, and for that I do apologise if I have upset him. My point stands per my later posts this morning. I am agreeing with the topic thread and saying yes it is the end for most Private Sellers on eBay.

I have also detailed how easy it will be in the near future for assessments to come out.

I have made some POSITIVE suggestions to improve the platform.

I have shown how people who say they inherited stuff, or I was given this, or I am a private collector will not be able to use that defence.

I have tried to suggest that people behave properly, if they are a business say they are a business and pay tax and NI. If they are not, restrict themselves to low volume sales so that the platform has a genuine chance of survival. If they behave like a business, HMRC is entitled to believe they are a business and send an assessment out. I think that is fair to all of us.

I can tell you from experience it is far easier to declare in a self assessment than it is to be dealing with an inspection when you need to find all the paperwork from years back, So I am simply trying to help. Up to you all in the end.

In summary, the topic question was is it the end for Private Sellers on eBay, I would say that it is not for genuine private sellers who are doing low volume sales. But for those who have been a little tardy in filing self assessments or who may have accidentally claimed benefits without declaring an income, yes I think the end is nigh.

Well done !

I retract my previous post saying I doubted that you would make an apology.

As for the rest of your ideas about what does or does not make a seller a business, I think most of what you say is factually incorrect.

Thats okay. Its good to have different opinions.

I am a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and I have been through the many delights of tax inspections in the past. I am getting too old for it now.

I can only relay my experience.

I would simply advise everyone to be absolutely sure of their own need to submit an assessment, pay taxes, NI etc. It is much harder to convince the authorities after they have issued an assessment, believe me.

If you are sure that you have valid explanations for how you earned this money then you have nothing to worry about, but I think I have gone on at length in earlier posts how saying I inherited this stuff, or Im a private collector, or I got given it, is not necessarily going to cut the mustard - but it may in some small cases.

So yes, I think this platform will evolve for Private Sellers now.

In the end, its up to you.

@storage.boutique  @theelench

And I have to retract as well.  To your credit, you are the first I've ever seen to come back and apologise.

As for the rest, I don't agree, and I was interested to see a comment here this afternoon where someone pointed out that Vinted have the SAME fees for business and personal sellers.  So it IS possible.  And if ebay were to do that it would be many years too late but it would help defuse a situation that's been a festering sore.

EBay it’s the end for private sellers.

eBay have been investing heavily in advertising for the last few months.

I think that eBay wants to attract a new set of private sellers who can be moulded and guided to where eBay wants the site to go.

I feel that as an eBay user of some 20 years, I am no longer wanted.

Never mind - it was fun for many years.

I’ve just had to refund a buyer due to this poor set up as not sold on here for years now & im not waiting several weeks to get paid , it’s just not on & what happen SPS if they claim the item was damaged on receipt when it was not , eBay will credit them back & leave you out of pocket , nah no  more .

Have you read about the new payment terms and Simple Delivery?  I mean by using Ebay 'help & contact' top left of your Ebay page, not in these lengthy, inaccurate posts.

If you send an item without tracking, you get paid 14 days after the original transaction, so that is 2 weeks,  With tracking, it is 48 hours after delivery is confirmed on Ebay.

With Simple Delivery, if the item is damaged in transit, Ebay refund the buyer.  The buyer keeps the item.  You are paid for the item.

There is so much misinformation and misunderstanding being spread.

If you want facts, read the information from Ebay, not other members who are spouting rubbish.

And again

Positive feedback received for a £20 item and still waiting.

There's no consistency here.

I can also concur with you having sold an item, posted early next day using Ebays system,  received confirmation and positive feedback,  but for whatever reason funds are not released.

Since the inception of this change in selling and payment using Ebay,  had you asked me last week I would have complimented Ebay for instant release of funds,  not now after two days and counting.

AJ.

I wonder how many millions of items disappeared overnight from eBay categories. They must've shrunk between them and HMRC restrictions. 30 items and £1000 in sales for before they submit your sales to the taxman, including personal possessions HMRC are currently brown-lettering people they believe owe them money. During lockdown the government didn't like the economy's growing online and wanted to clamp down to kill it. Flatlining the gig economy's online growth, killing any chance to make money in a cost of living crisis. So once cash is no more, they'll be happy. Own nothing, be happy, and eat the bugs. See you down the boot, online selling is  dead, fees and taxes are run by economy-growth-killing greedy clown's.

They were robbed. Couldn’t they find anyone in the UK who could pronounce the letter R? The advert reminds me of The Life of Brian.

Ooooo, careful.  The DEI crowd will be on your back.  We live in a world where a comedian with a serious speech impediment gets praise for coming up with a joke where you got to the punchline before she'd uttered two words.

Maybe we should see ebay in a more positive light.  It's an auction site that's suffering a disability.
