Be Aware! Offer prices INCLUDE the Buyer Protection Fee

I made a sale on my personal account this morning for a set of headphones that I had listed at £59.95 with it set to auto accept offers over £50.00.

A buyer made an offer 10% below asking price, so £54.00 and as I have it set to auto-accept above £50.00 this was accepted, however, when the email for the order came through, I only receive £51.23 as the Buyer Protection Fee of £2.77 is INCLUDED in the offer price.

In my opinion, if the buyer has offer £54.00, I should receive the £54.00 and the BPF should be added to that.

Just be aware if you have offers, particularly on lower value items, as this change will make most low value offers pointless to sellers.

eBay seem to be on a path to self destruction, not giving a thought as to how their imbecilic changes affect real people 🤷‍♂️

Have you tried facebook marketplace for selling locally or your local Friday Ad? I sold a car completely for free on the Friday Ad last year. I put it on before trying eBay (which would have costed a fair amount) and to my amazement I’d sold it after a day.
I’m selling less and less on eBay now. It’s a shame because it used to work brilliantly for me. Etsy also uses to be great before it was ruined. All of these sites have become too greedy. Do your local car boot sale or set a table up outside your house for cheap items!

If you list as a BIN then ebay add the BPF to your chosen price when setting up the listing, so that the price the buyer sees, and pays, from the live listing includes the BPF.

In other words, the BIN price, which is what the buyer sees, is not the price you enter when setting up the listing.

It was announced in the press at christmas that ebay and etsy were thinking of joining forces because both have been struggling

Thanks for this! I had no idea. I was just about to moan at my buyer who said he'd made an offer of £105, then realised the BPF must have been deducted when I added it to what I would get. How can this in any way be right?! Much as I decry the recent changes eBay should be consistent, the BPF is added to everything else for a buyer, now they are snatching it from the seller! I think I've just received that last straw to give up using eBay to sell

Be Aware! Offer prices INCLUDE the Buyer Protection Fee

I had an item for sale for £22. A’buyer’ sent me an offer for £15. On the app under the £15 in small writing it said ‘ includes buyer protection fee’. When you go to accept ( or reject it) it tells you the offer is £13.73.

I had a similar discussion last week when a buyer asked me to accept £45 for a pair of boots. When I sent her a counter offer for £45, she asked me why I was asking her to pay £47.55.

So..

When you list a buy it now item the BPF is automatically added on.
When a buyer makes an offer the BPF is deducted from their offer.

When a seller makes a counter offer the BPF is added to the price the buyer sees.

As a seller I am now aware of this lack of cohesion, but it is losing me sales as buyers are not aware.

Does anyone know if Vinted work similarly, or if the fee is added to any offers that buyers make at point of offer?

'When a buyer makes an offer the BPF is deducted from their offer.

Yes, you have it correct 😊

The thinking behind this is : (yes, there *was* some thinking involved 😂 honest....!)

The buyer is offering the maximum amount they are prepared to *pay* for the item (so the BPF has to come out of the money the seller would receive)

And the seller is offering the minimum amount they would like to *receive* for the item (so the BPF has to be added on to what the buyer pays....)

Thank you 🙂

Can I ask, when the buyer makes an offer, is it made clear to them that the price they offer includes the BPF? I have had some really confused potential buyers so am thinking not?

From a personal point of view, dunno 🤔 I've not made any offers myself, But...

I'd imagine ebay have to get that info in *somewhere*, but whether or not it's in an understandable form is debatable!

Ebay haven't got a good track-record of explaining themselves at the moment, so I'm not suprised you have confused buyers.

Hopefully a mentor will be along on this thread and give us a more comprehensive answer....

It says it after you click make offer no enter amount no alsonon the payment page that the offer you made includes BPF £x and if accepted will be taken out of your bank etc or eBay balance if you have any I suppose

you then confirm send offer

so say you like a dress priced at 3.30

you send an offer for 3

the bpf will be taken out of the 3£ the seller might normally get if they accept

You  were happy to accept £50. You have now received £51.23. but seem very unhappy.

None of this makes sense.

I have screen shots of one sale in my father's account - the offer was given and we assumed it included the BPF and he decided to accept Screenshot 2025-04-21 174132.png

but when the order details came in the offer amount was the amount received

but it seemed in a previous order that the offer included the bpf - so he sent a counter offer but it was unclear as the buyer was very confused and took some time to understand what was going on.

That's what I thought and it is so messed up.

I am removing all the offers again until eBay has fixed that mess.

It's just as confusing when someone asked me if I would consider a bulk buy offer and I spent about 10 minutes figuring out the price I should offer that includes these idiotic buyer protection fees.

It's not just that but I lost about 80% of the sales despite still being one of the cheapest.

I had regular returning customers and they have gone as well.

Thanks for nothing, eBay!

I don’t think eBay really wants private sellers now, the site seems to be flooded with Chinese sellers that pay to advertise,so they get preference. I suspect in the near future, eBay will become another TEMU / Aliexpress type site.

My sales on my personal account are practically non existent now, whereas before BPF, I was average 4-5 sales per day, so like you said, thanks for nothing ebay!
