Information visible on my private seller's accout:

"Add your tax information to your account to get compliant with UK digital sales reporting legislation, and to avoid upcoming restrictions".  - UPDATE ACCOUNT DETAILS.

I am a private collector buying and selling single, individual items.

Looks like,  after 20 years,  I will be done with ebay for good.

If you don't add your NI number, you won't be able to sell on Ebay any more and they may hold any money currently in your Ebay account.

They will still have to send your details to HMRC and it will (probably) be noted that you refused to give Ebay your NINO.

So, my view is, that you have got nothing to lose by handing over your NINO - Ebay has your full name, home address, details of sales and bank account details.  It will take HMRC to find your NINO and all the other information they have on you.

Will you have to pay tax?

HMRC may be interested an a seller who is selling dozens of similar 'brand new' items.  But, if you are selling off your own collection there should not be any tax to pay.  Have a look at HMRC 'badges of trade' to see if they will consider you are trading.

Hi,

All on-line Selling sites similar to eBay have to give Seller's information to HMRC, but they will have informed their Sellers this will happen when they go over the set limit.
