seller trying to charge my maximum bid

Hi, does anyone have any experience of the following?

I won an item with a closing bid of £494 but i was being charged my maximum bid of £650, does anyone know why this has happened? The seller said it was down to ebay but i cant see anywhere that says this is true.

Can you post the item number so we can have a look at the bidding?

Re: seller trying to charge my maximum bid

A very late [snipe] bid came in pushing you up to £650.

However, I'd never get involved in an auction that's a private listing for a high ticket item.

Re: seller trying to charge my maximum bid

If you look at the bidding, although the bidders IDs are completely protected, you will be able to identify your own bids - I think this was your bid of £650 - 9 Dec 2024 at 7:30:52pm GMT

If you look at the history, another bidder placed the same bid of £650 at 8.09 on 9th but because you placed your bid earlier, you won the auction.

Re: seller trying to charge my maximum bid

i watched the bidding to the final second and my bid of £494 won the auction. The other bids shown by Private Bidder weren't even displayed.

Re: seller trying to charge my maximum bid

i believe the seller has bid themselves. They said this morning that theyve phoned Ebay to confirm that was the selling price and at that price they have lost money

Re: seller trying to charge my maximum bid

If you go the listing page and click on "26 bids" you can see the bidding history for yourself.

Multiple bids continued to be placed for this item, including several placed just seconds before the auction ended, taking the bidding to £650. In fact, it looks as though three bidders tied at £650, but your was the winning bid because it was placed the first.

I imagine that what happened was that you prematurely thought you had won for £494. When multiple last-minute, "snipe" bids are placed it can take eBay's computer some time to sort out the winning bid.

Re: seller trying to charge my maximum bid

That is the seller's choice - it is an option that any seller has to have private bidding on their items.

It is not necessarily a sign that anything strange is happening.
