In the last three weeks I've bought four items of clothing and all have really bad smells of chemicals which people presumably think makes them smell 'fresh'. It doesn't. All 'smells' have to be processed through your liver. 'Perfume' in products has hundreds of different chemicals to make the smell. If an item of clothing is clean, it doesn't need a 'quick spritz' as one seller put it after I'd received the garment and messaged her. It an item isn't clean, you shouldn't be selling it.

This subject pops up every now and then and I , and most here will fully agree with you. Horrid smell and strong.
It's in eBay's rules that items of clothing Have to be clean to be sold, but this of course does not mean 'masking' any smells, which is all that Febreeze does.
You would be in your rights on receiving a strongly smelling ' Febrezed' item, to return it , as item not as described for a full refund.
Just as an aside, clothes sent in some plastic bags, those with a black inside, can give off a horrid smell too, more of an acrid smokey smell.

Thank you for replying. The items ranged between £4 and £35. I wanted to keep them all so I'm trying to air them all for a while and hope for the best. I live in a tiny flat so airing isn't easy! I'd wash them but the three most expensive were wool and either dry clean or handwash, otherwise I'd stick them in the machine. I might end up doing that anyway and hope for the best! The one seller I contacted and nicely suggested she should ask people before spraying was most apologetic and said she'd never thought of doing that before. I did give all of them good feedback without mentioning the smell.
I just hoped some sellers might see this thread and think twice before spraying.
I know that plastic bag smell you mention! I have to dump those bags as soon as I open them!
