Why has eBay changed the customer payment, people are complaining that they end up paying more for items than they are listed for.  I nearly lost a sale because it was more money than anticipated

Yep, the new Buyer Protection Fee has not been a popular move for both buyers and sellers alike.

Those people are not looking at listings properly then.

As has always been the case on Ebay, the price displayed is the price a buyer will pay.

Buyers are not paying more than the item is listed for, unless they are overseas and have to pay import taxes.

EBay has changed from charging fees to private sellers to adding a "buyer protection fee" of 70p + 4% to the buyer.   Is that what you mean?

Other sites do this and eBay had publicised it!

Yes but they are also adding VAT after the sale too. I don’t remember that being added afterwards. I had to refund a customer or I would have lost my sale.

Yes I always thought we had buyer protection anyway. Another well known selling site doe this but I find theirs a lot easier to navigate.

Please see what @jckl1957 says.  VAT will only be added if either you or the other party is based outside the UK [or the item is outside the UK]. VAT is added at 20%

And - no - I do not understand how eBay does it!  We must "assume" I suppose that eBay transmits it in some manner to HMRC
