Returned item lost in transit by Royal Mail

Hi comments please on a returned item of some 17.5kilos lost by Royal Mail.

A P58 claim forwarded to Royal Mail requires  ( Proof of posting evdence ) from me the sender but  Royal Mail do not provide in other words they are asking for something that they do not provide.

Also Royal Mail say they do not scan and provide tracking for 2nd class parcels and so the returns labels  provided by E bay with a Bar code are a waste of time.

Royal Mail state that as the seller will be paying the cost of the return he and only he can claim for compensation.

It is my view that until i receive a refund as promised the said parcel was my property and therefor my claim for the parcels whereabouts and compensation should stand.

This whole affair is driving me nuts and i continue to stand a possible loss of  £156.95.

Help and advice will be appreciated.

Quite simply the seller is not required to refund for an item which has not been returned to him. Therefore if a case has been opened and tracking proof of delivery cannot be provided the case will fail.

It is up to the sender to claim compensation from Royal Mail or the courier used.  Whether that person is the buyer who posted it or eBay who issued the postal label I don't know. For £156 the value was far in excess of the sum insured in second class post anyway. The fact that the seller may indirectly be charged for the cost of postage is immaterial.

How this whole thing will work out is anyone's guess. maybe eBay will give you a goodwill refund. They certainly should if the label they supplied didn't provide either tracking or insurance.

Your post is a bit confusing

Even if Royal Mail did scan the barcode it is questionable if RM would pay out

An item that is worth £150 should be returned by an appropriate method of postage to cover the compensaiton

2nd class only covers items up to £20

You needed to send it by an appropriate method and then you would of recieved a tracking number

No matter who sent it without a tracking number or proof of postage RM would not pay out

The only thing you can hope is it is returned to you. Did you put a return address on the item

The post office provide the proof of postage, not Royal Mail.

You say you returned the item - all 17.5kg if it - via Royal Mail.

Did you take it to the post office?  Did you not ask the counter staff for a proof of postage receipt when you bought the postage?

You really should have sent it by tracked post to ensure the seller received it.

If you have no proof the seller received it and you cannot prove to Royal Mail that you posted it then I'm afraid you have lost your money and the item.

I'll admit I am a bit confused/shocked that you were able to post something of that weight through RM with no proof of postage Smiley Frustrated

@ek450

I understood that it was sender who was responsible and had to claim.  Surely someone else could pay the return postage but the item not be returned at all.  So what RM have said just doesn't make sense to me.

You can request proof of posting for any item sent by post, even if tracking was not used.   But surely Special Delivery would have been the service to use if item is worth £156.

I would persevere with RM and ask to speak to a manager.   O/w if they insist seller has to claim is the seller going to co-operate with that?
