Wimbledon

Any Wimbledon tennis fans amongst you? I hope Murray does us proud this year. Loved the tennis in the days of McEnroe and Jimmy Connors, they were always entertaining.

Re: Wimbledon

Just watched a good semi final (women's, and quiet!) - Sabine Lisicki v Agnieszka Radwanska.  Looking forward to the final!

I think that the ladies final should be good.

I hope Lisiicki beats Bartoli in the final...

Tomorrow should be good but might be a bit nerve wracking Andy playing 6'8" Jerzy Janowicz who has a serve of 140Mph... :_|

Re: Wimbledon

Don't know about you lot but I have to take a breather from this absolutely brilliant but nail biting semi with Djokovic and Del Potro. I don't think Djokovic ever imagined he'd have to go to 5 sets...Back to it... 😉

Re: Wimbledon

I haven't watched any tennis, I've been trying to decide whether to watch the tennis or watch paint drying but I just can't decide.  I'll definitely make a decision by Monday.

Anyway, all I wanted to say was, I saw the two ladies finalists on the news this evening and was surprised to see how big the winner was.  I'm not being rude (she's skinny compared to me) and I don't mean she's too big, I was just surprised to see she looks more than a size 10 when you think of the energy she must use with all that practising every day.:O

That's a bit of a strange observation, CG! I don't think it's written in the rules that one has to be a "size 10" to be a tennis champ. Both Serena and Venus Williams are larger ladies, as were Betty Stove and Lindsay Davenport. Gives them more power.

My MIL always says that just as she's about to deliver some kind of insult "I'm not being rude but ..........." :^O

Re: Wimbledon

I don't think I was being rude at all pixel. And I didn't say she should be a size 10 to play tennis, I said with all that exercise she must do to become a world champion you'd think she would be a size 10.  Perhaps there were larger ladies such as the Venus sisters etc. but as I don't watch tennis I wouldn't know that.  The one I commented on was on the news.

You mentioned your mother in law delivering insults, does that mean you think my saying she's bigger than expected is an insult?  Do you think there's something to be ashamed of, being bigger than a size 10?

Re: Wimbledon

Thank the lord there in nothing to be ashamed of being larger than a size 10 or about 70% of the adult population including me would be in trouble.

John Inverdale has got himself in hot water by commenting not only on her size but her looks!

I did nor hear his comments, and these things can be taken out of context, but it seems completely inappropriate that a sports commentator should pass negative comments about a contestants appearance. I for one want to watch them play tennis!

Re: Wimbledon

Bartoli doesnt have the build of any of the other female players though and its being talked about all over the media

i always find it strange that people can comment on how thin or skinny  models are yet cannot when someone is bigger

and she is bigger than all the other female players

i've been on the receiving end

and its not nice

i often wished i could be so rude and say "why do you feel its ok to point out how thin i am and how awful and ill i look, but how would you feel if i pointed out, how overweight you are"

yes, i would have been the bad person then

why?

Re: Wimbledon

I've just been shown a newspaper article that accuses her of being fat and ugly.  I must admit, in the light of that newspaper article, perhaps what I said could have been thought of as just jumping on the bandwagon.  I hadn't seen anything about her whatsoever before I said what I did, it was purely my own observation, I don't watch or read about tennis at all.   Had I seen that first I wouldn't have said anything.  I still stand by what I said, but I wouldn't like to be thought of as a sheep.  And I still maintain I didn't say she was fat.  (her looks never crossed my mind, I wasn't judging HER on anything) All I said that I would have thought playing an active game like tennis would make you much thinner.  Sheesh!  Why do people look for horrible things when none are intended??

Erm - no ?:| Heaven knows, I'm no svelt little sprite any more. And yes, I've been on the receiving end of both ends of the spectrum. I used to be a skinny malinky (teased accordingly), and now I'm rather a hefty soul (according to comments from in-laws). I simply don't see the need to comment on someone's weight, whichever end of the spectrum they may be. If someone is doing their best, in whatever they choose to do, then surely neither weight nor looks has absolutely anything to do with it, whatsoever!

Possibly I misinterpreted your comments, CG and am sorry if I did so; you have misread mine too. There is more than enough dissent on the boards at the moment, without any further antagonism - let's not start a new argument, please. The written word is harder to digest than a face-to-face discussion, I think we would all agree (most particularly as there is no edit button on here - would be useful) 🙂
