THE NEW GOOD MORNING THREAD

PhotobucketSunny here.

Granny thank you. We're looking at if we can afford maths lessons at his level outside school to supplement things.

They say it's an ill wind that blows no good, and it's true. He's snapped out of thinking about himself, as older lad who's been waiting for heart op had a (thankfully) mild heart attack yesterday and is now in hospital with op re-scheduled for Monday! Have been running around like a mad thing trying to rearrange everyone's diferent comitments.

Momma glad your knee is coming along.

Floaty's rather occupied at the moment, but is in touch, and I'm sure she'll apreciate being in everyone's thoughts.

Arti, to be honest if he really enjoys Maths he'll be happy with text books and encouragement. If you can jumble sales, car boots and a knowledge of the syllabus(generally available online) should give plenty of resources. He should be able to work happily from GCSE teats if he's yr8 and top set!.

G/p he's curently doing CGP at home and marching through it happily. Found out yesterday that all though he uses alphasmart and will get additional time in exams, they don't get it for settings tests, and he only got part of the paper finished. Was working all term at level 6A/7C but got 5B.

In theory at next test at level below, if it takes him the same amount of time, he will drop to bottom set.

Afternoon t*m*m. 🙂

can`t they allow him extra time for the settings tests too ?

there should be allowances for those they know can do the work but in a slower timeframe

Towery it does seem strange doesn't it. However I can see the point made which is other children from the middle set are acheiving a higher mark than him, should they stay in that set and not be allowed to go up to a better set because he's holding the place. Am going to be having long hard look at school system and see if there isn't some way they can meet all their pupils needs without it being one at the expense of the other.

Somewhere in the fullness of time Moma. Bigger lad is fixable it just seems it needs to be done quicker than expected. Has girlfriend waiting hand and foot on him now!

Will pass on messages to Floaty. she'll be around at some point in person when things ease up a bit.

ARTI , do not take it lying down. BEFORE ever they applied for son to have extra time they immediately gave it to him in the in-school tests for Maths(basically to see what difference it made and whether it was worth the effort). With the extra time for Maths(his weakest of the core subjects) he went from a 4c to a 5a in less than 1 term(that is 3+ years progress!). In Science and English where they didn't give him extra time he remained stuck on 4b/a. School then gave him extra time for all exams(except taped ones) both inschool and externalfrom then on. Even the KS3 taped mental Maths gets extra time because they can be read it to the pupils(higher tier as well as lower). He also took the exams in the special needs area to ensure he was as relaxed as possible. College have offered the same facility.

Schools attitude is blatent discrimination. Your son is entitled to extra time in order for him to have the same chance to show his ability as other children. The extra time is not there to allow him to achieve an artificially high score in his exams. To not allow him the chance to take the test properly and then to insist he is put in a lower set because of his failing is discrimination. At the least they should multiple his marks up based on the percentage of the paper he actually completed.
The schools argument does not hold water - they say should a child with higher marks be held in the middle set whilst your child is in their place? - rubbish, it is about ability. Master Arti has shown that ability throughout the year and should not be put down. If the middle group's teaching is so far behind that they will be repeating last years work(for the top set) then any child promoted from it will be floundering(without a really serious amount of extra tutoring). If the boy could cope then they should squeeze him in(from a person who went to school when our teachers thought 30 was a small class!). Son was offered top group Maths in middle of year8 and found he hadn't a clue what the teacher was going on about and chose group 2(for him the right choice).

Both schools my kids are at do Edexcel Maths and the GCSE Edexcel textbooks are very good, very clear and have the answers in the back. Not sure which books we are going to use for daughter but you would be welcome to them next year(got intermediate and higher ones). Sorry to go on but I am getting really quite riled over this.

((((Master Arti)))) he might not want them but he deserves them.

THE NEW GOOD MORNING THREAD

Good morning all on a damp and windy day in London.
I'm back home now - Mum died on Friday evening - very peacefully after a long struggle.
It's a strange feeling and hasn't really sunk in yet - the funeral will be either friday or early the following week.
Thank you so much for all the thoughts and good wishes. They've meant a lot to me over the last months. Special thanks to Arti for that special blend of friendship and support. xxx
Take care everyone. xxxxx
