THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

I wonder if we could get this thread pinned or would that be the kiss of death for it?

Aaaah GBC - glad you are here.
Have you tried your machine on stretchy fabric?

Don't think I'm very good at this 😞

Have sewn 20 squares for a mat, but some of my corners aren't right:_|

Should I have tacked instead of just pinning?

They will get better with practice. Don't be so hard on yourself. I have a motto. 'Life's too short to tack!'

I bought precut squares, but I think some were a tiny bit bigger 😉

Well that's one excuse anyway.
The edges are all OK, that's what I can't work out!

Definitely agree with that. Even if you've used sewing machines for years, you have to practice on a new machine until you are familiar with it.

I used to have an old Jones handle machine set up on a treadle. Very relaxing, I used to treadle myself to sleep and woke often with a cotton in my face. :^O

That brother machine looks good especially with a 5 year maintenance on it. Mines a brother now, I've had about 4 machines over the years. I've got one with automatic threading, which is brilliant, I was struggling so much to thread the needle. When it arrived I spent about 30 minutes threading needles, it's very clever.

I struggle with threading too - especially threading front to back.

My ancient hand machine threaded side to side which I found much easier.

Yes I think the older machines were easier to thread side to side. Mind you my hands and eyes were younger then.

Any recommendations for a new machine for me? I am giving my Brother to my daughter. I want to upgrade a bit, I would like one-step buttonholing and the facility to adjust the stitch length, as long as possible?

I have been looking online, and going round in circles! None of the websites seem to say how long the stitch length will go to, they just say 'adjustable' or something like that. Also I have not come across the top loading bobbin thing before, is it any better?

I am not into quilting (not yet anyway!) I just want to do general stuff, clothes, curtains, cushions, mending etc... Any advice will be gratefully received..

Have you got a shop nearby that you can try some machines at? I have a mid range Janome 6260 and the longest stitch length is 5mm. It's a good machine & would recommend the make. Places like Sewing Machines Direct would answer any questions you may have.

A free arm is where you can remove the table from the machine & have a small area left that you can put a sleeve or trouser leg over to sew it.:-)
