Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

Replacement doors CB as some of the old ones are peeling. They are nearly 14 years old & only B&Q basic. I have a lot of them though & it's going to coat me £550 & that's with 25% off. I had to work that out too as he didn't know how to do it on his calculator! lol They are white like the existing ones as nothing else would look right.

Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

Our local uni hires some of the rooms in the Town Hall where I work for thier students exams. You wouldn't believe some of the behaviour and conversations that we hear. Some of them just sound so thick & unemployable, it's really worrying that these people are given a degree & yet a lot of them don't have an ounce of common sense between them.

Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

When I go back to get them I will look for the young lady who has helped me previously. She was good. The manager of the kitchen department wasn't anything to write home about either!

Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

We watched Pointless earlier and there were two students on.  One of them thought that Turin ws the capital of Italy!!!!!!! She also thought that Italy was a Slavic country. What on this earth do they teach them these days?  A friend of mine told me the other day that her soon to be 13 year old granddaughter hadn't even heard of times tables.  No wonder the youth of today are somewhat lacking academically.  It just beggars belief.

Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

I agree CB.  What is this country coming to?  When I was in junior school, for the first half an hour on a Wednesday morning, we were tought hymns.  They were strict at both the primary and secondary schools I went to but at least we had a decent education and they were good days as well.

Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

Sorry ladies but I was never taught hymns and I was never really interested as a non believer. Our school was a C of E school but we didn't do a lot of hymns,  we did however have to recite one of the times tables every morning after registration, and we did a small spelling test after lunch. My mental arithmetic is great but my OH who didn't do much on the tables is useless, even though he has a Masters degree in engineering that involved applied and pure maths, he was by the way 33 when he got that, and I am very proud of him.

Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

I admit to being a lapsed Catholic but I still remember the hymns from school.  I think that times tables stand you in good stead for your chosen career whatever that maybe.

Stan, I think that quite a few workers today don't show any sort of pride in what they are doing.  If I made the same number of mistakes that some people make today when I was working, I shudder to think of the number of jobs I would have lost.

Ed, I bet you are proud of your OH over the masters degree.  You are right to be proud.  I was always better at the likes of English, history and geography at school.  I used to get by in maths.  My mum's brilliant at maths but my spelling and knowledge of words is better than hers.

Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

I know nothing about hymns being an atheist but my grandchildren definitely do their tables at school. I believe they are in the curriculum so all children would have to do their tables.

Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

I'm an atheist but we learned hymns at school.  We had assembly every morning and hymns were sung and as you went along you picked up the words.  I still know most of them, word for word today.  As for tables, I think they're so useful in so many ways, from shopping to sewing  to cooking, all sorts of things, and they never leave you either.

Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

I am a bit numerically challenged so tables never stuck with me. I do have problems with Math. The grandkids are better than me!

Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

Morning all.

Maggie,  I was only going off what my friend said.  Her granddaughter hadn't a clue as to what times tables were.

I can't make the weather out here at the moment.  I've had a quick look outside and there's no frost which is a good thing.  Also, there is some cloud around but not much.  I see that it's forecast for ice and snow for next week.  I hope not.

Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

Afternoon all.

It's cold here at the moment and it's trying to rain.  Oh how I hate winter and being cold.

Had a busy day today.  Went to town first thing to get a few bits and then I went for my swim.  After lunch, I met my dad and we went for a drink.  I've had to take my mum to the doctors.  Nothing serious.  He just wanted to see her for a follow-up appointment following the heart scan she had last month.  Just going to relax for the rest of the day now.

Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

Morning all.  Hope that everyone is as well as can be expected.

I was going to go for a swim but when I looked out, I thought better of it.  We have had one almighty hail storm and our road looks like a skating rink.  It wouldn't be too bad on the main roads but it would be getting there.  At the first sign of bad weather of any form, the roads on our estate are death traps.  The fact that a lot of people around won't put their cars on their driveways doesn't help and there's a lot of double parking as well.

Hope that everyone stays safe.

Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

Morning all.

Going to get my house in order today as been a long week in work and a few chores have been neglected also got to plumb in the new washing machine as mine died a fortnight ago and did'nt have the money to replace it but managed to find a second hand one on a local buy\sell\swap site so might save me having to do it all in MIL's machine.

Was'nt around yesterday as was son's b/day so went there straight from work and out for a family meal (well good excuse for cuddles with D).

Wet and dull here today so may do a food shop this afternoon.

Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

It's gorgeous here. Blue sky & sunshine. I am making the most of it with the washing as the rain is coming back tomorrow. I had a panic yesterday as I couldn't remember where I had put the lead & pedal off my sewing machine! That's the trouble when you tidy up at Christmas! Machines are all clean now & ready for my quilting holiday.
