Deno's Diary Part 3, A new Chapter

Deno (proper name De Novo) was adopted by FHG posters in 2005 when one of them, Shebalator, rescued him from slaughter.

Then - 700lbs underweight with a broken jaw and multiple other ills.

Photobucket

2008 - still struggling with sarcoids but finally fit enough to have a light rider up for the first time so he could
join his mates on a jaunt round the local lanes

Photobucket

2009 - due to sheb’s declining health, a new home was sought for Deno.
A very brave ebayer named upthecreekyetagain ( very apt name I think you will agree) agreed to take him on.
So, now Deno lives in Surrey with the Creeky family, plus 3 lovely mares. He has 5 acres of grass and orchards to roam in and is very happy.

Photobucket

His sarcoids still remain a problem, but a new vet is investigating them further to decide on the best course of palliative care.
Visits can be arranged, please contact Creeky for more info.

Deno is reliant on fundraising and donations for his food, medicines and all the things that make his world that bit nicer.

His in-depth story can be found on his website http://www.denorescuedhorse.co.uk/
and there is more info (including how you can join in and help him) on Elphaba’s Me Page.

This replaces his previous diary thread that had become too cumbersome to load.
And to mark the start of the next chapter of his life.

New Deno supporters always welcome!

Deno's Diary Part 3, A new Chapter

The field seems to last forever – shouts and calls have produced no results – the shapes are still in the distance but at least the light is starting to improve.

Eventually I can be certain it is a group of horses and a loud call of, “Denooooo”, triggers a response.  A head is nonchalantly raised in my direction and is then lowered to the ground to continue munching the luscious grass.

A few minutes more and it was plain to see I had found the absconders.  They were all standing and grazing without a concern in the world!  A quick check showed that the only visible damage was a tear to the front of Deno’s rug.  Rubbing my hand under the rug I could feel a slight swelling but there was no blood and pressing lightly didn’t disturb Deno’s munching.

Very quickly I had his head collar firmly fitted and lead rein attached.  Not quite so quickly I started to lead him back towards the gate, the other four following us at a lazy amble.  By the time we reached the gate I was out of the supply of horsey treats I always keep in my coat pocket and Deno was starting to get restless, refusing to believe that I had no more Polos!.

There I am, unable to go any further, being frisked by a huge great horse, freezing cold, and the remaining escapees starting to wander off.

Fortunately Corrie and her sister choose that moment to turn up and they have a fresh supply of Polos – immediate disaster has been averted!

Without too much trouble the remaining head collars were fitted and ropes attached.  This is going to be easy.

A short struggle and the gate was opened wide enough for SIL and me to lead the two Welsh cobs through, leaving Corrie to stand guard over the terrible trio of Deno, Posh and Lulu.

Without a hitch nor drama of any kind we lead Tally and Talesha back home and secure them in the stable area with a pile of hay.

Easy! – if that was anything to go by it shouldn’t be long before we will be able to get warm and have our first cup of coffee of the day.

How wrong can you be!

Deno's Diary Part 3, A new Chapter

A short walk and we are back at the gate – Corrie is there waiting for us – sans equines!!  -  There was absolutely no sign of Deno, Posh or Lulu.

It would seem that Corrie had run out of Polos whilst waiting for us and, displaying their usual sense of loyalty, the terrible trio had simply wandered off.

Yet another trudge to the bottom of the field, it’s getting bigger all the time.  Around the corner and sure enough there they were happily munching away.

OK, we’re getting used to this by now, attach ropes to head collars, tempt with Polos, and eventually we’re back at the sadistic gate with the barbed wire.

So how are we going to do this?  The footpath is on the other side of the A217, (of course it would be) – it is now gone eight in the morning on the major route between the M25 and Gatwick.

All we can do is stand in the open gateway and wait for a gap in the traffic – the brow of a hill to the right, a corner to the left.  We wait, and wait, and wait – at last a clear road – quickly we step forward and wonder of wonders the horses respond and come with us.  Posh leading, Lulu directly behind and Deno bringing up the rear.

Posh has just about reached the far side, a car comes around the corner, waves of our torches and it slows to a stop – the motorbike following the car decides there is no point stopping – he can make the gap between Lulu and Deno – a roar of his engine and he’s through.

The noise spooks Lulu who dashes for the far side pushing Posh out of the way – at least my sister in law managed to hold on to her with just a few pulled muscles.  During this Deno has just been standing there wondering what all the fuss has been about.  We set off towards the path and I manage to prevent him from going to say hello to the patiently waiting car driver.

We only have about a quarter of a mile to go but with the traffic getting heavier and faster Lulu is getting more and more nervous.  The path is only wide enough for one horse so we have no option but to walk in Indian file.

The final straw is when a huge lorry roars past – Lulu loses it, rears up and twists towards the road – sister in law hangs on but is dragged over.  Posh reacts and Corrie is on the floor – Deno just stands and looks!.

Miracle of miracles neither horse nor handlers are hit and we manage to shepherd mum and daughter into the driveway of a very posh house.  The lawns on either side are enough to calm Lulu down as her stomach takes over.  Deno and Posh aren’t reluctant to test it out either.

There is nothing for it – we can’t go on and Corrie decides to ring the police – can they help us?

Deno's Diary Part 3, A new Chapter

Twenty minutes of waiting for Corrie, SIL and me – twenty minutes of trimming the lawn for Deno, Posh and Lulu.

A patrol car stops in front of the drive – out jumps the same PC who had helped us earlier that morning.  We explained the problem and she was quickly on the radio to her colleagues.

Another ten minutes of waiting and munching – two more patrol cars turn up – a quick conference and England’s finest swing into action – the traffic is stopped and a PC goes along the line of traffic asking drivers to switch off their engines.

BBC Radio Surrey – well I didn’t hear the exact report but I was told it was along the lines of, “. . . the A217 has been closed near Horley while a number of stray horses are recovered”!!!!!!!!

Horses, once again lined up in single file, led alongside the line of traffic – leaving behind three piles of the finest compost as a “thank you” for the owners of the posh house.

Little waves of “thank you” to the motorists who probably expected to be at work by now – before long the driveway was in sight – feelings of relief outweigh those of embarrassment.

Just as we are about to swing into the driveway a van driver decides to start up his engine – once again Lulu is spooked and decides to try and kick the van! – luckily we manage to restrain her and she misses!

At last we are home – all horses locked away with hay to graze on – not as good as fresh grass but at the moment I have no sympathy.

Back to the house for that mug of coffee and bacon sandwiches.

All that remains to be done is find where they broke out and stop it happening again

Thanks, Creeky.

I know that was the last thing you all needed at this time, but well done all of you - and the local plods - for getting the right result in the end.

I think I will have to give you a bottle of the "special stuff" next time I'm down there!

:^O

Help someone in trouble and they will remember you the NEXT time they are in trouble!

Aaaaaargh!  Crivens!  And did I say aaaaaargh yet?  :_|

I hope that the adventure hasn't had a knock on effect for Corrie so soon after surgery 😞

I'm so glad I got to read that all in one go - yikes what a collection of horrors!    Well done to all involved in getting them banged up again safely.  What next? ;\

I have read back and checked...... I can't find when the Terrible Trio became the Famous Five.

Where did the other two horses come from?

They're two Welsh cobs - 14-2

Sam, (my daughter), wanted a horse she could ride on a regular basis.

Tally, (now gelded), is the father of Talesha.

We were too soft hearted to split them up so we are looking after them both, on a loan basis.

Tally is 9 and Talesha is 6

I have no problem is supporting the Famous Five!

Creeky's daughter (and Welshtoff's daughter) have taken more chances and loved these horses more so than they deserved!  They are norty monkeys!

Thank goodness that the horses are all so loved in Creeky Land.
