Deno's Diary Part 3, A new Chapter

Deno (proper name De Novo) was adopted by FHG posters in 2005 when one of them, Shebalator, rescued him from slaughter.

Then - 700lbs underweight with a broken jaw and multiple other ills.

Photobucket

2008 - still struggling with sarcoids but finally fit enough to have a light rider up for the first time so he could
join his mates on a jaunt round the local lanes

Photobucket

2009 - due to sheb’s declining health, a new home was sought for Deno.
A very brave ebayer named upthecreekyetagain ( very apt name I think you will agree) agreed to take him on.
So, now Deno lives in Surrey with the Creeky family, plus 3 lovely mares. He has 5 acres of grass and orchards to roam in and is very happy.

Photobucket

His sarcoids still remain a problem, but a new vet is investigating them further to decide on the best course of palliative care.
Visits can be arranged, please contact Creeky for more info.

Deno is reliant on fundraising and donations for his food, medicines and all the things that make his world that bit nicer.

His in-depth story can be found on his website http://www.denorescuedhorse.co.uk/
and there is more info (including how you can join in and help him) on Elphaba’s Me Page.

This replaces his previous diary thread that had become too cumbersome to load.
And to mark the start of the next chapter of his life.

New Deno supporters always welcome!

Goth

These are the hooves that need sorting:-

The first one is not too bad as the sp;it doesnt go too far up the hoof - the second is more worrying

looks like those cracks on his hooves are the remain of the damage Sheb suspected was caused by being caught on barbed wire.

Angel, it would be about your luck wouldn't it 😞

Seriously suggest NOT using echinacea etc and sticking to basic nursing methods, vit c and anti inflammatories until you know.

That second split is the one he had serious remedial work on....know I've seen a photo but not sure if I've got it. It was drilled right back creating a deep groove in the hope healthy hoof would fill it. Doesn't look near as bad as it did then.

He does look wonderful - you've been at him with the Pledge again :-D

He is looking good Elph and is very relaxed - However just so people don't get too complacent about his health and well-being the following are just a few pictures of the less visible sarcoids between his rear legs

Looking at those pictures it is possibly hard to believe that there has been an improvement in them over the last few weeks but there really has. The only one currently bleeding is on his sheath and daily liberal coatings of vaseline, (thank you Lara), is keeping the flies of it - hopefully that onw ill subside as well.

The one on his face is looking much better and is no longer bleeding, in fact the only other one bleeding is on the outside of his rear leg which unfortunately does get abraded every time he rolls, which he loves doing. It was also damaged last week when he collapsed with "choke".

😮

* just outed myself as a Deno lurker :-x *

Jeeez, the poor boy. I know diddleysquat about horses but that has brought tears to my eyes (for more than one reason), and I really hope that doesn't feel how it looks.

Lets hope that there's lots and lots of money raised to make/keep him comfortable and cared for as he is now.

I know there are some auctions running now, am I right in thinking there will be more tomorrow?

I had a bet with my lady. I filled my piggy bank (over the last six months) and was going to cash it in. Whoever was closest got to choose what to do with the money. She said £25.47 and I went for £35.
Total was £37.51 which will go to Deno.

No probs Borzoi. Was nice to have met you.
I used one of those coin star machines!
It was coins from 1p up to 20p.
My pleasure Maggie. Running out of things to list for MDCC and may just be getting drunk on that day as it is my 54th birthday.

Colin - Thank you so much - it is much appreciated - as I am sure you can imagine, there have been a lot of expenses just recently, as well as more to come, that have to be covered somehow.

Grace - no need to lurk, a word of encouragement is always much appreciated, especially on those days, thankfully rare at the moment, when it is cold and wet.

Sorry if those pics disturbed anyone, especially if you were having lunch but to answer Grace's question I dont think they are as painful as they look - I wash them daily with salty water and finish them off with baby wipes and a liberal coating of vaseline - he doesn't seem to flinch when I touch them.

Deno's Diary Part 3, A new Chapter

Diary Entry – Week 6

A Week of Improvement?

Sunday saw Deno receive the last dose of his antibiotics hidden in a karrit sandwich – as normally gratefully received – of course this means that the karrit sandwiches for the rest of the week are not strictly necessary as we won’t be starting the coriolus supplement until the middle of next week.

On the Monday morning we all venture down to the orchard and sure enough the pair are stood at the fence waiting for us – there then followed an awkward few minutes whilst Deno and Cuddles nuzzled us in vain searching for the missing sarnies. Fortunately disaster was averted as we had thought ahead enough to take a tube of Polos with us.

We didn’t make the same mistake twice – pure karrit sandwiches were delivered as expected!

We give both Deno and Cuddles a daily light groom as well as cleaning Deno’s sarcoids and liberally coating them with Vaseline – the big problem has been cleaning out Deno’s hooves – there has to be a secret to this but if there is we haven’t found it – yet.

Probably the easiest way to demonstrate the problem is to recount what happened today:-

Saturday has become the major grooming day for all the horses - As a group we all trek down to the stable area to find it deserted, sometimes the terrible two are just like kids, it is though they don’t want to be clean. Fortunately their hearing is good and the temptation of a tube of Polos is enough to tempt tem out of the trees and into the area we have fenced off just for grooming

The grooming kits are ready, Cuddles’ in a nice Bentley bag and Deno’s, consisting mainly of Cuddles’ old brushes, in a distinguished green carrier bag - :^O

Miss C brushes out Cuddles whilst I take on the daunting task of doing Deno – fortunately the area we have put aside for grooming has plenty of grass still left – enough to keep them both occupied whilst they are brushed, coat conditioner applied, manes and tails combed and conditioner applied.

Soon the pair were looking good and all that remained to be done was their feet and the application of Vaseline to Deno’s sarcoids as well as liberal dose of Naf Off fly spray to Cuddles and gel on Deno.

Picking out Cuddles’ feet was as normal not a problem, the hand stroked down her leg from the knee and the hoof was presented ready for cleaning

Next it was Deno’s turn, from previous daily experience we knew to position him near to a tree and the same method of stroking the leg was applied – the effect? – nil, nada nothing – today no matter what we did we couldn’t persuade him to lift a hoof! - Unfortunately there are no photos of this because both Miss C and I were fully occupied in trying to lift his hoof and Mrs C had been called back to the house by a phone ringing.

For over 10 minutes we struggled to no avail at which point we decided to try a different tactic, one we had not tried before. I stood in front of Deno and with an open packet of Polos tempting Deno forward he reached out and as he did so took a step forward which allowed Miss C to grab his leg and hold it bent at the knee. This allowed her to pick out the hoof and once done Deno was awarded with a Polo. One down three to go!

The second of the front hooves succumbed to the same treatment but when we tried it on the back ones we hit a problem – yes, with a combination of Polos from me and swift action from Miss C it was possible to lift up his rear hoof but as soon as the picking out commenced he lost his balance, at one stage even managing to cross his front legs. There now followed an interesting dance around the grooming area until Deno walked alongside the tree, Miss C grabs the leg, Deno slowly starts to lean and ends up resting against the tree. One done and the choreographed dance changes from clockwise to anti-clockwise until once more he is in the correct position to clean his final hoof.

All that remains to be done is to apply hoof oil to eight nice cleaned feet and the job was done – phew

Two beautifully groomed horses, turned out into the orchard, no doubt they will search out their favourite muddy patch near to the river in order to have a roll!

It wasn’t until we finished that we noticed we had an audience:-

Don’t forget to check Deno’s Bucket for all his photos

Waves to everyone 😄

Borzoi, the devil Ruby Scooblet :^O is doing great thanks. Legs like a great dane though, she still reminds me of Bambi sometimes. All legs with not quite 100% co-ordination, but she is an absolute joy.

Good on you Colin, very generous of you.

Maggie, so I'm a week ahead of myself then? At least I'll not miss out on anything then. 🙂

Happy Birthday for next week for the ones who will be celebrating.......could do with a new car.....;-)

Great job you're doing Creeky.
