Hi
I bought an item (used) that came from the US, it arrived and very badly smells of smoke. I tried to air it, clean it with wipes and it wont go. Because this is a high price item, if I open a return and send it back I presume I will lose out on the import charge through ebay that I paid?
I am in two minds, that I could try to shift on to breakeven or make a small profit.
Might be easy just to return for a return and take the knock on the cost

As you paid the charges to ebay, they should refund everything you paid them, and through them, as long as the item is returned.
The seller refunds what they got.

adding to the advice already given -
To cover yourself you must use an eBay not as described case.

As a side note... not sure if this would be an idea to try to get rid of the smell, but I was once given a clothing item to sell for a friend that had tags on so I couldn't wash it.
It had been stored in a fragranced bag for many years <to anyone reading never do this, not even for a week!>.
I put bicarbonate of soda <aprox 2 table spoons> in to a sock & then put this & the clothing in to a closed cardboard box, changing the sock each week until the smell had gone.
It took a while, but did eventually work.
