Global shipping prohibited items

Hi all

So December last year I turned off international shipping via global shipping as I could not provide the relevant documents for my items to allow them through customs etc.

The other day I surprisingly had a sale to someone in US and it was to go through global shipping.   So packed it and then get message saying it's being confiscated and buyer gets refunded by ebay and I keep funds.  Found out that the setting I turned off had been switched back on by ebay!

I then looked at list of prohibited items via global shipping and basically everything i sell is not allowed through it.

So, even if business sellers do obtain the safety documents that is now required,  what's the point of global shipping if a wide range of items are restricted from being sent through them?

kat@ebay marco@ebay dave@ebay

Please can someone provide an answer as this really can't wait till next wk to post in the community chat?

Thanks

The point of the program is that the vast majority of sellers can use it quite easily.

Just because your items fall under the excluded list, does not make it a bad system.

Every courier has there exclusions, it's not unusual at all.

Why not try and compare what isn't allowed with the likes of RM's exclusion list?

I find the GSP far better and more robust than attempting to fill out all the required paperwork etc, and have never had a problem with this service, even when things go missing or get broken. That said, I do know a couple of selling mates that have had things confiscated where both buyer and seller have be recompensed, their view is 'a sale is a sale', they have been paid and therefore are quite happy to carry on selling more of the same thing.

Many years, jewellery has been accepted through global shipping program and never had problems other than items with certain gemstones got confiscated.

Then changes whereby safety documents had to be provided for items under business accounts to be eligible for global shipping.

Now seeing jewellery is restricted completely.  The GSP is a good program,  I agree.

More trying to understand why the changes and reaching out to other jewellery sellers to get their views really.

Hi @auctiongabble ,

Thank you for your post.

I can understand you don’t find it beneficial if the items your selling are not allowed however it does allow a wide range of items that does benefit other sellers. While eBay try and include as many products as possible there are a lot of considerations that have to be taken into account such as precious metals and stones for jewellery, value, customs regulations, carrier restrictions, security concerns and packaging requirements. Restrictions and regulations are ever changing.  Due to this range of factors certain items such as jewellery are currently excluded from the GSP programme.

Thank you,

Kat

Global shipping prohibited items

Thanks Kat, as i said i was trying to understand why the sudden change to requirements and what the changes were.  Spoken to support in Dublin who are fantastic at getting answers, they reached out to the shipping team and their reason as to why a particular item i sold was restricted was due to 'no certificate provided for item / no source information for the the diamonds' (even though the diamonds were small side stones.  This is a reason i have never heard before, so would all items need to have certificates to get into the US?

I understand the rules / tariffs are changing multiple times around US, UK and wordlwide but the reason stated by the shipping program, this is not detailed in anywhere.

Hi @auctiongabble ,

That's great the Dublin customer support team were able to get the reason behind why the item was not allowed. We wouldn't have confirmation on all items needing a certificate. Its possible but as rules keep changing it best to check with carriers and customs for those details.

The GSP programme doesn't give exact details as to why items are restricted as it can be a combination of factors which can keep changing so the information on the help page is displayed as a list under prohibited/restricted.

Thank you,

Kat
