With Christmas fast approaching

Have you received loads of Christmas cards or are you sending fewer? I have noticed a considerable drop in the number we receive which is sad, I know as one gets older a lot of your friends die and that there will be a natural decline however I wonder how it must feel if you live alone and don’t see or hear from anyone at a time like Christmas what it makes you feel like?
Is it no longer relevant to send cards or are we just becoming too mean?

I looked at the cards on sale today and quite honestly I thought that for what they were, they were a rip-off so I didn't buy any.

Yes, the number has dropped drastically and yes, loads of people have died. Like I've said before though, every day is a good day if you wake up! Some people don't like to hear that, but those who've gone would just LOVE to walk round the lake with me in the cold and rain.

It's life Jim, but not as WE know it.
Live long and prosper.

I haven’t sent or received as many as I used to, mainly because as you said a lot of family we used to exchange cards with have died.

Some of my family and friends have died, so my Christmas card list has become shorter, but I have been surprised by how many people have told me they are not sending cards any more. They send an email instead. There are fewer cards with a religious theme available too.The commercialisation of Christmas has put a lot of people off spending money. In our family we have made an agreement that we will buy gifts just for the children, but no adults. Christmas makes me sad these days, as it is nothing like the Christmases we had when I was younger.

I've received a few of those and I don't like them.  One card ( if that's what you can call it) sent to every one with a single click, and no thought or effort.  At least when you receive a proper card you know the sender has thought about you, made an effort, and paid a few pence in postage to send you a greeting.

Maybe its because the world has gone totally mad, all this pc stuff is getting annoying, i mean a gender neutral santa or those protesting for santa to be a women, Christmas was suppose to be about celebrating the birth of jesus the rest is extra, i read a story last week were a women did Not celebrate christmas because santa was a man and didnt want their children to have a christmas because of this, they will only celebrate christmas if santa was gender neutral..................Does it matter!!!

Yesterday I received an email Christmas greeting animation from a couple in their 80s, whilst it was a lovely thought and wonderful to see octogenarians embracing modern technology it simply isn’t the same, how can I display it ?

I don’t care if Christmas has lost its “meaning” or not, I love it.

Up early, make sure all the animals are sorted.  Breakfast and then make sure turkey etc. are all prepared and/or in the oven.

Then a walk up the road popping in to say hello to all the neighbours - end up meeting half of them doing the same!

This year there are 11 of us round at our place for lunch, so total chaos but nobody’ll care.

4pm, time for a quick snooze whilst the guests earn their keep by doing the dishes 🙂

Christmas is magic.

Well said Creeky, it is fast becoming the only time when families come together, I enjoy it too and despite the over indulging that inevitably occurs it is a time also to think of those who are alone and for whom celebration is no longer applicable.

As an Atheist myself, I don't really have any real interest in Christmas. I do send cards to my friends and family who do like to celebrate it, and I do like to see cards available with a religious theme for those who celebrate the real meaning of Christmas. I did have wonderful Christmases as  a child with my family, and it was only when I got older and got interested in the various religions that it ceased to have a real meaning for me. I do like to celebrate the Winter Solstice, which does have more meaning for me, and also the turning of the year. I like to have lots of greenery about, which I think is nicer than all those nasty plastic decorations!  It is lovely though, to see children having a wonderful time, and looking forward to Father Christmas. One thing I do miss is having a glass of Sherry with my old Mam on Christmas Eve...😕

Astro, I’m an atheist but that is my personal belief and I see no reason for it to impinge on other’s enjoyment of Christmas.

Yuletide, the period around the Winter solstice, was celebrated by early pagans, just another religious festival.  No reason us atheists can’t do what religions have done continuously, nick a religious festival for ourselves.

We’ve got all sorts of decorations up but not a sign of anything religious - we’ll be eating pigs in blankets as well, something you’d never see at a Jewish celebration of a birth!

Have a great Christmas 🙂

No pigs in blankets for me upthecreek, likely be a couple of rolls and square sausage as I am working Christmas day and after my shift I go on call, so a 35 mile drive home, a shower, a quick snack and off to bed in case the call out phone rings and I have to go who knows where as our call out service covers the whole of Scotland.
