Jargon. Are you an expert?

Can you translate jargon?

What does someone mean when they say that in response to a letter they filed it vertically??

Did they mean they binned it, shredded it or what?

I think they cleverly folded it into a paper aeroplane and launched it out of the window!

My first thought is that your letter has been filed at the bottom of the pile.

Jargon. Are you an expert?

My question was prompted by Boris saying he was annoyed when officials brought him letters to be signed requesting an EU extension:-

“It did make me very angry,” he (Boris) said. “I was so sick they came in to see me at one point and handed me the letter and I filed it vertically, I’m afraid. Then they came back with another copy and I filed that vertically again.”

The paragraph before your quote in the Express:-

. . . admitted that when officials brought the letters asking for an EU extension to be signed, he threw them in the bin – twice.

“It did make me very angry,” he said. “I was so sick they came in to see me at one point and handed me the letter and I filed it vertically, I’m afraid. Then they came back with another copy and I filed that vertically again.”

Wouldn't it be easier to just say that he'd binned it?

However, it's the jargon...... "filed it vertically"? What's all that about?

The thread wasn't about mad utterances it was intended to be about jargon.

If Boris binned that letter he could have said he'd put it in the circular file, was that too old hat or did he just invent a new bit of jargon with vertical file?

I was hoping people would get their own ducks in a row and come out with their own examples of daft jargon along with their meanings and what they really mean.

Oh dear, there's an old saying...... "If you can't find what you're looking for, you must be looking in the wrong place."

A favourite is "Why is everything in the last place you look?"

The retort to that is "Why didn't you look in the last place first?"
