DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi all, pippy_oak here, posting under my brand new user name. Hopefully, Richard will pin this thread, as it seems a nice tidy place to pose specific questions about a book (Is it a 1st edition, what's it worth, where to find it etc. etc.) Don't just come here with a question. If you think you have the answer, then let's hear it.

Or we could just mooch around and learn a few things.

Cheers

Paul

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Not really, Chris, it's difficult to know how to react to a Newby finding their feet. It's only four bidders. It'll get interesting when the serious ones get going.

Quite right, Mrs Bee.

I'm hoping there's a lot of dry powder out there.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Not 'dot' - do! ... and put I on the front, please.

I'm getting a bit over excited by the bids on my first book sale.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Many years ago when I was about 4 I had a children's picture story book called "Dell's House". It was about a little elf who lived in a mushroom but one day there was a storm and his house was washed away. The other elves found him a new mushroom and decorated it for him.

I remember the pages of the book were mushroom shaped and each page had a few lines of the story (which was in the form of a poem) and were illustrated with a scene which those lines described.

It started off:

In Mushroom Town, all red and brown, there lived a merry elf.
Day after day, at work and play he whistled and sang to himself.
His name was Dell, and a tale I'll tell of how one very sad day
The rain came down in Mushroom Town and washed his house away.
Dell cried, "Oh dear, it's ruined I fear. It really is a shame."
His neighbours all had heard him call and out of their houses they came.
They looked around until the found a mushroom new(?) and dry.
They painted the door, and covered the floor with a carpet as blue as the sky.

I would love to have a copy of this book as it was the first book I ever had and I'd started to learn the poem but it got lost when we moved house and I never learned the rest of it.

It would be great if anyone recognised it from what I can recall. It must be at least 49 years old!:^O

So, what's next on your hit list?

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Sorry, Caz, thank you. I swear that post wasn't there earlier.

Having now looked at Completed Listings, I find that Open University stuff sells! - so another three boxes have been hauled out of the loft and I'm sorting through the texts of the courses I did.

There are only a few buyers for Maths stuff, so I think high starting prices are the way to go. The question is, how high? There's not enough recent data on eBay and the OU site isn't much help.

If anyone can suggest where to do some research I'd be grateful.

And thanks again to third_light and His Lordship for mentioning Maths books when discussing packaging. I would never have thought they were in demand!

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

For the two Maths books you've just sold, the lowest available prices on A****n UK were very similar to your winning bids, so I would suggest you plug in the ISBN's of your stock and make a note of the prices over there.

Bear in mind they have a standard postage charge, and if your book is very heavy, some allowance should be made.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Thank you, Paul. I had looked in the jungle. In fact the lowest price for Book 1 was about £23.

My problem is finding guide prices for the course materials (no ISBNs). For example, I have the complete course which was the forerunner of this one, 8428379212. That seller only offered half the course.

I don't know whether they are sold through places like ABE, et al, or what words to use for a search there.

I'm getting what data I can from the eBay listings, but there's not much to go on.

By the way, the Bible got a good price, but not as high as you thought, maybe? It'll keep you in Baltis for a while.

... and re. the postage - those Maths books cost far less to post than the jungle's flat rate!

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Volume 1 (used) is £15, and Vol 2 (used) is £16.75,unless I'm looking at the wrong books, which are really close to your prices.

If it doesn't have an ISBN, then I don't know where to look.

Re: the Bible, if I could make a couple of thousand percent profit on everything I sell, then I'd be very happy. Yes, I think it should have made a little more. A couple of years ago, I made £360 on a slightly later one in far worse condition. I am not influenced in the least by the astronomical prices on the dealers' websites. By the end of the auction, there were 702 hits, 54 watchers and 37 bids, so there is no question of it not reaching its audience

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

I listed a book last night and I wondered if anyone would have a look at my ad and tell me what you think. My main concern was the category and key words for the title. I avoided L@@K, WOW and RARE although the last might have been ok.I tried to come on to ask last night but although I was able to read the board every time I tried to post I got 'page cannot be found' or 'page has moved'.Any comments or advice appreciated, and can I still revise anything as it seems to have a bid.Oh and of course you're all mindreaders so I don't have to bother putting the title! It's 'Endless Amusement'
