Doesn't Seem Possible - 31 Years!

Mr Fishy and I have been married for 31 years today - wow!  Sometimes

it feels as if we've never not known each other and other times our

wedding seems just the other day as I remember all the stuff we did

and the funny things that happened that day.

I remember when we left the reception in our car, Hubby opened the

driver's window as we both always do as soon as we get in, and as

we pulled away a slpodge of shaving foam that our friends had

decorated our car with came in the window and landed splat on

hubby's face!  We had fish & chips in the Happy Eater on the way

to our first night in the Cotswolds 'cos we'd got hungry - heaven knows

how, the amount we ate at the reception!  We went to the Lake District

and I swam in the lakes.  Hubby tried to carry me over the threshold

of the church into the reception and my veil got caught in the door handle

and fell off, we both ended up in an undignified heap having a giggling

fit!  All the Guides in my Guide Company came and made a guard of

honour and we had a little party for them when we came back.

Gosh, reminiscing - I've waffled on a bit!

Today, I think we're having fish & chips in the garden centre to celebrate!

Congratulations to the Fishies........are you ready for a change of water in the fish bowl ?

Almost 45 years here, just think I would have been out 30 years ago had I murdered him instead !

Spent the honeymoon in the Lake district, All Donald Campwells landrovers were in the gate ways where they had abandoned them and gone home  after the disaster:they were bright blue with his name on . I suffered terribly from travel sickness and remember having to walk along a windy road with OH  travelling alongside in first gear as we couldn`t park anywhere on the narrow lanes..

I also have friends older than my marriage !

Wow thank you everyone for your kind wishes, what lovely people you all are!

Lovely to read all the reminisces too.  We were talking last night about

weddings and what we and all our friends did, where they were etc and, yes,

how it doesn't have to cost a fortune, the lovliest thing is the celebrating a

very special day in your lives with people you love.

We consider ourselves very lucky and thought too of everyone whos hubby/wife

has passed away.

Re: Doesn't Seem Possible - 31 Years!

So pleased you enjoyed your day, It is sad that today it is considered and achievement if you stay married for more than 5 years,

Its a partnership, needs to be worked at but can be very rewarding.

Too much is put on the showiness of the big day, how much you spend, how many people you invite and trying to outdo others,

that sometimes people forget the real reasons behind getting married.

We have never really fallen out (minor spats) hubby usually gives in before me, we have a laugh and don't expect too much from each other.

We have very different interests and people laugh at the way we talk to each other, But most of our friends are on their 2nd and in one case 3rd marriage so who is laughing now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have a wonderful next 31 years.

Re: Doesn't Seem Possible - 31 Years!

Thanks Blackadder,  I agree that it's sad that a lot of people find it

astonishing that marriage can survive so long and I'm sure you are

right about much more emphasis being on the day itself and all

the trimmings than on what it actually all means.  I guess we could

say the same about Christmas!

To us the real values are not in material possessions but in

family, friends, experiences and being grateful and enjoying

what we have.  We haven't gone over 30 years without the

occasional disagreement but it's superficial when compared to

how much we love and care for each other and we try never to

go to sleep not having sorted out whatever we disagree about

or at least agreeing to differ!

We've got quite different interests but respect each others', we

are not conventional in a lot of ways but we are what's probably

regarded as old-fashioned nowadays in that we still value

what promises we made to each other on our wedding day.

Re: Doesn't Seem Possible - 31 Years!

OLD FASHIONED MAYBE - but still married.

Our interests are very different too, he is a hunting shooting and fishing sort of guy and I am a huggy feely tree hugger(his words)

I respect his wishes to listen to his rubbishy music (heavy metal) and he respect my wishes to listen to my brilliant music (Michael Buble, Emile Sande, Pink, Stereophonics and anything 80's.

I am however always right and that is fine by him as he knows where he stands.

His favourite saying is I always knew I married Mrs Right but not Mrs Always Right.

He likes old houses I like New,

He likes stripes I like Flowers,

He hates Gardening (apart from digging holes, building walls)

I LOVE IT.

He likes 4 x 4 cars

I don't (too big for little me and I hate driving his as I look like a 2 year old behind the wheel)

He likes Holidays in this country

I love going abroad, (I am ok with this country too),

I adore Paris

He wouldn't go unless you tied him up and stuck him in a crate.

He Likes Horror and Gory films and gangster movies,

I love Chick flicks.

Need I go on 25 years later still married, still happy (most of the time unless he makes a mess.)
