eBay have now posted an official announcement - why this wasn't posted well in advance is a mystery!
It doesn't look like this change is going to be reversed.

I'm extremely annoyed😠.
What a dreadful decision to cut loose older android/iphone users from using the app.
This is surely going to lose eBay many buyers and sellers!?!?!? Oh well, it's their platform to ruin.

Well they'll lose a lot of custom

I wonder how many people have actually spoken to ebay customer services to complain? I did state yesterday, talk to them.
The more users complain, then if not rectified they will loose custom!
With this issue and the start of payments on Delivery today, then I can't see them keeping all the users.

Given EB app users on Android were using, what, Android versions 7-15 before this, it doesn't take a mathematical genius to work out that around 1/3 of Android users have now been blocked from using the app as of yesterday.
And this with zero notice until they did it? Buy a new phone or be forced to use the basic browser on your phone with none of the speed & benefits? I'm speechless.

I'm afraid that wasn't the case, judging by today's announcement.

I have spoken to the clowns at ebay yet again, [3rd time], and raised a complaint this time. The complaint is for lying to me yesterday about sorting the app out in 24hrs, and missleading users. I know it's pointless, but I feel better now.
I would suggest everyone does the same, and if nothing goes forward, we have at least tried and kept the staff busy!
Well done ebay 2025
Message system - FAILED
App version - FAILED

No it's about 17% of existing ebay Android users that are now blocked - Android 7 to 9 is about 17% of the installed base of Android 7-15. Android 10+ is on at least 81% of devices so yes still a sizeable number of devices no longer able to run the eBay app. The cummulative versions of Android devices can be seen here:

But how do we know it's 17% of ebay users let alone ebay app users just because 17% of phones run old systems?
There are a lot of ebay users that don't go near the app regardless of whether their phone can cope with it.

Thank you for the correction.
Okay, so 17%.
3% off a total of 1/5 of Android app users on the platform still potentially runs into VAST numbers of people.
If it had to happen, so sad they didn't do this the right way and give people advanced notice instead of doing so after the fact.

The metric is 17% of Android devices that last week could run the eBay app now can't - they can still be used for eBay by using the browser. I don't know how this relates to actual eBay app users but you would hope someone at eBay checked this before releasing the app and decided that losing X% of app users was fine.

Regardless of the percentages involved, it seems to me it would be a matter of common courtesy to let a hefty chunk of users have advance warning of their phones suddenly becoming obsolete for the app they have become accustomed to and comfortable using. There are people on low incomes, people who suffer anxiety/depression, and many conditions which this kind of sudden punitive action on their routines can profoundly affect. Ebay went to great lengths to red flag the GPSR 6 months in advance not to mention a pretty extensive campaign regards the changes to their fees structure, buyer protection etc - why was this was left out when the impact on people is arguably even greater?

Hi. Same here. I'm not changing my phone just for eBay (been using it since 2006). I've noticed that they're scamming recently; where I made couple of offers on items I was interested, to see who would accept my offer and only then I'd of accept and potentially buy the item! But that all changed now, where once the offer gets accepted, the purchase is being done automatically without your confirmation?! So I ended up with 2 items, where intended to buy 1.🙄

tried using the browser on my tablet, and it doesn't work either.
Which browser? Which OS?
You may need to either uninstall the eBay app or change your settings if eBay browser links are automatically opening in the non-working eBay app.
