EBay app failed to update

This week the eBay app failed because my iPhone 7 will not update to ios16.

Why oh why didn't eBay leave a legacy version live so I can continue using the app?

Anyone know if there is any pressure being put to bear or plans for a solution?

I can of course use the website but it looks quite different.

Of course I could go on eBay and purchase an iPhone 8 or newer but that is somewhat counter-intuitive.

EBay app failed to update

If your operating system does not support the latest version of the eBay app and you cannot update your operating system or use a previous version that is still supported, it should still be possible to use a mobile browser to go to ebay.com or ebay.co.uk and use eBay that way.

If you are using iOS 15, see instructions here for installing a compatible version of the eBay app (link goes to US boards):

https://community.ebay.com/t5/Mobile-Apps/Can-t-log-on-ebay/m-p/34718852/highlight/true#M49153

If eBay browser links are opening in the app automatically, iOS users should be able to tap and hold an eBay browser link and select "don't open in the app" to prevent that from happening. Android users need to go to the device Settings: Apps: eBay: Open by default: Open supported links and select "don't open in the app".

EBay app failed to update

According to a post on the UK community boards, the latest version of the eBay app requires Android 10 or later, or iOS 17 or later.

https://community.ebay.co.uk/t5/Technical-Issues/Pictures-missing-using-APP/m-p/7762881/highlight/tr...

If you cannot upgrade your operating system or find an older version of the app that works with your current operating system, you should still be able to use a browser to go to ebay.co.uk instead.

If eBay browser links are opening in the Android version of the app automatically, you can disable that by going to your device Settings: Apps: eBay: Open by default: Opens supported links and choosing "Don't open in the app". iOS users can tap and hold an eBay browser link and choose "Don't open in the app".

Certainly don't buy an iPhone 8. Mine has the latest compatible software installed, iOS 16. Latest eBay app update requires iOS 17.

There is another version of the app available for iOS 16 users; see here:

Dont have the funds to buy a new i phone that will run ios 17 just for ebay, everything else works fine so unfortunately ebay have now lost another customer who has been buying and selling for over 20 years, get your act together ebay before your gone.

Members have reported that deleting the app and using the browser version works well and is a workaround to try.

EBay app failed to update

It’s been happening for a couple of years now - eBay app updates meant  had to update the OS on my iPad and iPhone - OS updates I may add that were otherwise unnecessary as there were no useful additional features, just silly things for sad power users.

It’s now Feb 2025 and the latest upgrade will not install on my IPhone 7, and the ‘old’ app will no longer work. My iPad DOES work with the upgrade but I’m sure within a few months another pointless ebay app ‘upgrade’ will not be possible.

The worst thing about it is for the last couple of years the eBay app upgrades have not really offered any improvements, in fact usually they’ve caused more problems.

I figured use Google Chrome and launch eBay through that and it works just like the app I hope this may solve the problem for many of us that thought we might need to buy new phones
