We’re updating some of our categories and item specifics to make your listings easier to find.

Starting 12 October, you’ll see updates to the following categories.

Collectibles & Art

Jewelry

Musical Instruments

Parts & Accessories

Sporting Goods

As these updates go into effect, you may see temporary impacts to your listing experience or to the visibility of listings in the affected categories.

This is a result of listings transitioning to the updated item specifics and category structures. Your affected listings should return to normal within 48 hours, though you may see irregularities on some listings for up to a week. We recommend checking your item specifics and categories in affected listings after these updates are complete.

These updates also include new item specifics in the above categories, which will be required 22 February 2022. Starting today, these item specifics will be available as you list, with the “Required Soon” tag. Learn more →

Keep an eye on this page over the coming days—we’ll be sharing up-to-date information on affected categories and listings, and answering any questions you have.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 ---Update as of 14 October---

We’re continuing to work through this change and want to thank you for your patience. We also wanted to provide answers to some top concerns and questions:

Why was I charged fees when my listings were moved to a different categories/subcategories?

We determined that a technical issue impacted a small number of listings, which resulted in incorrect charges (including insertion fees) for some sellers. The issue has been fixed and we will be crediting impacted sellers as quickly as possible. No calls to Customer Service are necessary as credits will be issued automatically.

Should I edit my listings if they’re in the wrong category, have been moved to another category, or have wrong or missing item specifics?

No. Recent category changes require updates to many thousands of servers and data changes to nearly every aspect of our platform. This level of adjustment takes time, which is why we asked for your patience while the process runs. We expect most data updates to be completed within 48 hours, but they can take up to a week (i.e., through to 19 October). After that, if you have an item specific in mind that you think would work well for your listing, please consider adding it as a custom item specific.

Why isn’t my item coming up in search?

The category change update is still in process. We anticipate search issues will resolve when we complete most data updates during the next 24-48 hours.

There are more item specifics now than ever before. Do I need to fill in all of them?

No. Item specifics that you have already filled in will be maintained as the category moves are completed during the next week. In addition, new soon-to-be-required item specifics are being added and will become required by 22 February 2022. As always, the more item specifics you fill out, the better visibility your listing has to buyers.

For Parts & Accessories, when will fitment/compatibility charts start working again?

There was an issue with parts compatibility not working properly as the category changes rolled out, which has been resolved. You should now be able to see the options to add fitment compatibility when editing your listings.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 ---Update as of 21 October---

We apologise for this delayed update. Thank you for your patience while our teams worked to finalise category changes.

All listings have been moved to their final destination categories. You may now proceed with checking your categories, revising items, and updating item specifics where needed.

Some item specifics have been renamed, and the value you originally provided has been copied over to the new item specific, so you don’t need to re-add these item specifics. We encourage you to update your listings with item specifics that are showing as “Required Soon.” These will become required on 22 February 2022.

All other item specifics are either Recommended or Optional. Learn more about item specifics.

Some categories were retired and replaced by product-based categories. You and your buyers can still find the items you’re looking for. Simply browse to the product category of your choice and use the filters to refine your search.

More information about key category changes:

  • Dolls & Bears. The categories based on Brand/Material/Theme/Character/Franchise/Product Line/Type of doll have been retired. Former categories have been replaced by left-hand navigation filters in the new Dolls & Doll Playsets category. You can access the filters by browsing to the product category of your choice and using Brand/Vintage/Material/Theme/Character/Franchise/Product Line/Type filters to refine your search.
  • Pottery & Glass. The categories based on Brand/Origin/Production Style/Production Technique have also been replaced by filters. You and buyers can now filter by the Brand/Origin/Production Style/Production Technique/Time Period Manufactured.

  • Postcards. The categories based on Location/Theme/Subject have been retired and replaced with two main categories for Topographical and Non-Topographical postcards. The former categories have been replaced by left-hand navigation filters in the two new main categories. For example in Topographical Postcards, you can filter by Country and Region.

  • Jewellery & Watches. The categories based on Main Stone and Metal Type have been retired and replaced by product-based categories under Fine Jewellery. Use the filters for Main Stone and Metal to refine your search.

---Final Update, October 29---

The category changes announced in our Autumn Seller Update have been completed.

Now that all category changes are complete, while you might still see some adjustments to searches, it is okay to update or edit your listings without concerns of losing data or having it moved again.

We appreciate your detailed feedback on this roll-out. We'll continue to adjust the process based on the input we’ve received here, and we'll take all these suggestions into consideration for future updates.

As this project is now complete, this post is being locked from further comments.

Resources and observations

We’ve heard from you that updating your Item Specifics in time for the February 2022 requirement date may be a challenge.

A useful tool that can help is located in the Seller Hub under Active Listings section. There is a drop-down box labelled ‘Download’ which will generate an Excel document for ‘Missing Required or Recommended Item Specifics’. You can read more about this tool here

Should you come across any inaccuracies within the new Item Specifics we ask that you report those directly to sdsupport@ebay.com so our team can investigate. We also ask that you continue to share suggestions on changes you'd like to see going forward here, selecting the Categories and Item Specifics option.

Hi Buisness seller in dolls category I am unable to relist similer or amend listing and ther is no item specific tabs showing thus I am unable to list anything  I pay for a store and can not use it please advise conerned and frustrated seller k

I have been trying to list Postcards, but all the catagery's have disapeared. I have tried listing a postcard but now get the message "Looks like somethings wrong. Please try again" I have for the past hour and still get the same message, why?

Hi,

I sell costume jewellery so this affects me.  When doing a search on eBay I have already noticed in the earrings section under "style" that drop/dangle has been removed.  Almost all of my earrings were listed under this.  What I need to know is is this still going to be an option in future or has it been permanently removed?  In my active listings section, under item specifics I have a lot of "add recommended" highlighted, when I bring up an existing earrings listing the style section does have the "required soon" tag highlighted, however, dangle/drop not drop/dangle is still in the options to choose from.  Does this mean this is what I should now use and the dangle/drop style will be available as an option on eBay in the coming days?  Currently my earrings are not visible.

I am trying to list postcards too but am getting the same LOOKS LIKE THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG message -- would be nice if someone from ebay came on here and put us all right on what we should be doing in the new improved ebay......

I'm trying to list in porcelain all things like Royal doulton lladro crown derby have disappeared it appears to be drinkware figurines or vases!!!!! not helpful at all

I am a Business seller trying to list Vintage Chinaware and other items  The categories are all over the place and when I select the recommended eBay category I am then told that the category does not exist and to choose another catergory none of which are sensible or appropriate.  Very frustrating and annoying.

even if I go to my ebay and hit the SELL at the top all it does is return me to my listings ! basically it seems there is no way I can actually make a listing (using a desktop)

i've just tried to find a postcard and the category that has always been there has now disappeared. before, it was so easy to find what i wanted and now, i have to put in exactly what i looking for as long as the seller has put the same thing in there description, then i'm able to find it. i've just given up now in looking.

Trying to list in the Pottery, Porcelain & Glass catagory and just keep getting error. I can not even edit the listing to update it so a buyer can purchase.

I am assuming that as this will affect sales for listing that have already gone live at a cost of 36p per listing including VAT that Ebay will compensate by allowing sellers to have free listing for future products in the affected categories to the amount of listings they currently ave live?

So for example I currently have 125 listings in the jewellery category, so will I get some sort of allowance of 36p x 125 = £45.00, to cover those listings?

I have been trying for over an hour to list in Dolls & Bears category, same problem as everyne else i think,i cant complete drafts, sell similar or new listings which is really annoying as i have just bought a large amount of new stock which i cant list.Totally agree with everyone else where is the message from ebay telling us what is going on & when can we expect it to be put right. Not good enough.

Can you not leave things alone

Another fine mess from eBay

Hey everyone,

Thank you for sharing your comments on this. We are gathering feedback and passing them onto the relevant teams for you.

We would recommend allowing 48 hours for any discrepancies on your listings to reflect the changes.

Many thanks,

Amy

thanks for updating anyhow.   I suspect you are getting lots of feedback but not necessarily favourable !

Hi

Am also a business seller, cannot list in Collectables, pay for being a business seller and unable to list is a joke.  Ebay, please contact me.

I am also not amused that I will have to revise over 1700 items to get the correct catagories back if the updaye does not correct them back as they should be, At Present just an example a Wedgwood tureen is listed under Pottery, Glass Cookware Dinnerware Serve ware plates.

Hardly correct.

but 48 hours with no sales and unable to list is a long time can't edit anything etc I am supposed to be on holiday next week so wanted to list my stock my thursday

also do I have to go back in and re select new categories for everything already listed

because I sell vintage stuff I have all unique listings of single items ( ocaasioanlly i might have 2-6 of something like cup and saucer sets) not 100 red t shirts in size 8 and 100 in size 10 etc

when I'm looking for something I would rather 39 items can up that exactly matched than 2500 that have one word matching, no one wants any figurine they are looking for a specific figurine by a specific maker

or they want a specific pattern of china not just any mug

agree a wedgwood tureen could be in tureens or even serving dishes but it is not a plate what was wrong with having wedgwood separate dinto decorative and tableware

if you want Royal crown Derby plates in Old Imari you are not interested in Wedgwood basalt mugs or indeed vice versa

Really useless, I can't search at all for items in specific categories. For example

  • Collectables
  • >
  • Model Railways & Trains
  • >
  • Railways & Trains
  • >
  • N Gauge
  •
  • ebay are losing a lot of business - buyers cant find product at all

As a buyer, I can't search from N Gauge model railways at all.

Worse than useless.

yes looking at my listings I see both ships and WW1 are now NON TOPOGRAPHICAL POSTCARDS.

No wonder the buyers cannot find anything that we cannot list -- great idea who ever thought it up

Sellers of collectables on here might be better off on a dedicated collectors' such as Delcampe.

They have far more categories and no shop fees.

This is a complete farce on ebay's part. We have listed on ebay since 2003. This morning all our items are now in inappropriate categories.

We sell antiques and have always listed our items in pottery/ porcelain and glass / date lined ceramics. The category has disppeared and decorative antique porcelain is now listed with cookware!

Does eBay want antique dealers to move elsewhere? It certainly looks as if that is what they want.

This is a monumental mess up on the ebay customer service.

We should recieve credit for the time we have to spend correcting their web developer's mistakes.

Feedback to ebay management -  0 stars and a big red NEGATIVE.

This is a big advert for ebay competitors!

No more updates please just making things more difficult for buyers and sellers alike.

Well that's all I bleeping need.
eBay will not work as a website on iPad  in opening item specifications or printing off labels. Had to go on a very old laptop and do my printing.

alway messi g around with something.

48 hours is disgusting, which means no money for me

I sell mainly rings, and have noticed that the category on most of my listings has changed from 'Rings' to 'Necklaces and Pendants'???!!! What are you doing?? This will affect sales, so I hope we will be compensated for this mess up?

Please do not fix what is not broken

All of my postcards for sale have gone into non-topographical postcards when 99% are topographical, sales have disappeared, bids have dropped right off, It was easy to find things via the sub cattegories now unless what you type in search exactly matches what somebody has listed as then you have zero chance of finding it.

I despair of eBay why not ask someone who understands instead of proceding willy nilly.

Hi,

ART listings should be re-done.
Your new art categories have nothing to do with art; it's misleading, incorrectly structured and repetitive.
Culture?
ooak?
handmade?

origin?

If I may make a suggestion, please make it short, precise and simple:

Original/reproduction

category(paining, sculpture..)

medium (oil...)

materials (canvas)

subject (seascape...)

size (picture and image)

price

copyright

date of creation

Please!
On behalf of everyone: please can you employ someone with common sense. eBay was working perfectly well, why change it?

Change for the sake of using the budget?
I suggest: use this budget for charity.
Thanks

Straw poll of the comments isn't looking good so far !

I lists 100s of items per year in pre 1840 and in 1840-1900 dateline pottery and porcelain

have the dateline categories gone ?

is so , it looks like an end to my 22 years of sucessful selling on ebay

totally unecessary  return things to the way they were or lose customers

lots of buyers of antique pottery  items use a dateline in the categories , I can no longer see any dateline options , and its not asked for in item specifics . getting worried now about my sales , if I cant find things how will our customers find anything . Theres a big difference in looking for a new teapot than an antique teapot for example .

What are the new categories going to be? Is there going to be a category for date lined ceramics/Antique ceramics?  Maybe some advanced warning would have been helpful....

excellent news , ebay seems hellbent on making listings invisible to customers, pure absolute insanity.

I Have just found out that I can make a listing again -- postcards but instead of being allowed to list warships (military vessels) all I can do now is list NON TOPOGRAPHICAL POSTCARDS.

Presumably then it is just either TOPOGRAPHICAL postcards or NON TOPOGRAPHICAL

and just hope that someone is able to find your item -- sort of blind mans buff

Item specifics are all very well if you know exactly what you're looking for and the seller has included all the correct keywords. Otherwise, you're left floundering. This move by ebay is potentially a disaster for buyer and seller alike.

Well, maybe not for some buyers, going by the low prices I got on some beautiful ceramic pieces last night on another account, some buyers will be crowing over their bargains.

But, also, people buy with their eyes and don't always know what they're looking for and this new system removes the possibility of browsing in any meaningful way. They wrecked the books category this way, now its ceramics and everything else, presumably.

As a seller mostly of antique and collectable ceramics who has rolled with a lot of ebay's punches - as have so many others - I really think this might be the last straw for me. Not because I'm annoyed but because if this decimates prices, which is already looking likely, there is no point trying to sell here anymore.

I can only imagine that is what ebay wants, to get rid of anyone who isn't either a big volume seller of used goods or a retailer of new ones.

They destroy livelihoods at a stroke, seemingly without concern for those who have built their businesses on this platform. Cheers, ebay.

Last time I checked Jewellery was spelled "Jewellery" in the UK, and not "Jewelry" which is the US spelling. Are we all to adopt this US spelling in order to gain a higher ranking these days?

Also, could you please include the changes and item specifics that you are suggesting will be taking place by February 2022 in Jewellery, because on the link you have provided, there is nothing about it - only fashion.

One other thing ... perhaps the person who invented the Jewellery item specifics from ebay could help me.  If I sell a Pendant which is attached to a Necklace, and I am selling them both together as one item (because, we often do in Jewellery) - can you tell me whether on item "Type" I should select "Necklace" or "Pendant". It seems that I need to select one or the other. In the unlikely event that this distinction will help my buyer find my items - should I assume that Buyers search more for "Pendants" or "Necklaces" when they are buying a Pendant attached to a Necklace ? Your help would be most appreciated.

The buyers of topographical postcars are going to love it -- it seems you can no longer search by county -- only by topographical -- so you cannot look in your county and look for anything new -- anything new will be lost in the huge overall TOPOGRAPHICAL.    I suppose if you were to try and dream up a way of annoying both sellers and buyers alike you couldn't have done better !

We have only just managed to understand the new payments systems in place and now you have altered the Listings which is making it impossible to work with.  What will you do next?  At times we have had over 650 items for sale in our eBay shop, we are power sellers but are wondering if we can continue as this new system does not work for anyone.  This will also make things difficult for buyers to find Antiques they collect if the catagories are altered.  Resulting in less sales for everyone, cannot understand why eBay want to do this as they are also loosing out.

I listed some "X BRAND" martini cocktail glasses this are top end brand  they have been now reallocated to decorative glassware --> vases

now if you want some good cocktail glasses you are not going to look in "vases"

also who wants to look at 39,000 vases in the hope of finding drinking glasses I think it will push us small sellers away ( in terms of volume away) as we don't pay to be high up in listings so before there may have only been 20 of the item I'm selling and maybe only 3 exact matches  so my listing would show up if you searched for X brand martini glasses  but now if won't or it will be on page 23

seriously looking at other avenues facebook is only good for cheap items not antiques etsy is ok for some things but not others it is all a bit rubbish

Hi,   I am a business seller for 7 years now and I am assuming these updates to the categories and item specifics are the reason for the increase in my final value fees , I sell hand made bracelets which is a sub category of jewellery which should be charged at 11.9% but have had 2 sales with 12.9% deducted . After contacting eBay was reassured I would be refunded for this but I hope this doesn't happen on future sales or it won't be worth selling on this platform.  Also after reading other comments from sellers regarding a drop in their sales I am assuming that is why my sales have dropped, please sort this out eBay, your sellers are working hard to try and make a living and deserve better.

I really dont get all these changes. Have you actually done a customer survey to see what people think of your item specifics or is it just led by a group in an office

It just makes things harder to find for buyers

Most of the "specifics" i cant be bothered to fill in and to be honest, I only fill in what i have to

The specifics are not consistent, you have so many duplicates and a lot don't mean anything to the actual listing.

Hi - I am selling postcards and am used to using the categories for topographical and subjects but all the subcategories have now gone. I did know this was coming from other sources but my understanding was this would be helped by making sure you fill in the item specifics (which I usally do anyway) and skilful use of key words. However, I have just checked and the item specifics have disappeared from the listing page on Seller Hub. I assume this is a mistake.

Going back to the whole idea - it makes searching for both current and past listing a nightmare. I do hear the reasons why these changes have been made but surely common sense should prevail based on the way collectors search for things.

If you have all your eggs in the eBay basket I would look around for alternatives, god knows what else they will mess up.

I use SixBit software to list items. The compatibilities have stopped working.

I assumed that there was a problem with that. I only chanced upon this message by accident and am so glad I did; I've already wasted 2 hours trying to figure out what is happening.

I REALLY REALLY hope this update is going to work as I've seen 90% of carefully inputted compatibility data for car parts on my listings and competitors' to be missing!!

I have a feeling that this is going to be the biggest mess that ebay have ever caused - and I really hope I am wrong.

Reading the comments above about compatibilities being moved around to completely wrong items is chilling. It means a waste of 10 years of work if this is the case.

The final death blow for my business if this is how it is. I can't be asked to jump though more hoops and I refuse to.

Business seller in various collectibles categories. As well as the categories being all over the place, I have also found that I am unable to promote new listings. Is this a general glitch or just me?

buyers and sellers are just going to have to hope that we find each other through the fog that will now be ebay -- both sides will i suspect find deals much more difficult.
