Hi.  I haven't had time to read back through this thread yet ... what faith is this based on?

The thread is clearly headed . "The Glitter has sunk to a new low"
& if I may answer your comment about double standards, I have NEVER condoned crimes against children, women, or men, I have never condoned same sex between consenting adults or same sex relationships.i have only ever given my opinion which is my entitlement , if I have been proved to my satisfaction I am wrong I will & do apologise, if someone can change my mind on a subject I will concede that point. I don't think I have had to hurt anyone's feelings to get my point across or hide behind a faith in doing so!.

Saasher

I owe you my sincere apologies. You misunderstood my post about double standards. That was never directed at you personally or anyone else personally, I am sorry if it read that way, I obviously didn't make it clear that time what I did mean.

I was talking about double standards on a general basis where morality comes in to play, as you did point out, in regards to God's principles.

But as you have pointed out that it is not really taking into account people accepting that there is no land law broken when speackinf of same sex then I shall leave it at that.

I don't hide behind religion and I certainly never wish to hurt feelings either. We will have to agree to disagree on a certain subject and I apologise to anywone here who may have taken things personally.

Re: The Glitter has sunk to a new low.

I think the point is rather than comparing the act of sex with a minor with other sexual activities or preferences, the comparison is with the attitude we have towards the perpetrators. Of course sex with a minor is illeagal and rightly so, but not because we should be repulsed by it but because of the abuse of position that takes place between an adult and minor. An adult is in a position to exert their will over that of a minor, so the abuse that takes place is that of an adult abusing their position as an adult, taking advantage of their position to manipulate, coerce or force themselves on a minor.

This is why sex with a minor is illeagal, beacsue a minor is not deemed to be fully responsible for, or in control of, their actions. A minor can not make a contract, a minor can not give consent in a binding way. Now we can argue over at what age a minor is in control of their will, and some will say younger than 18 (age of criminal responsibility is 10) and some could soundly argue that even an 18 year old is in a position of weakness when confronted by a more mature adult, which is why liaisons between staff and students in places of further education are discouraged; when you pack your 18 year old daughter of to University you wouldn't take too kindly to some 30 something lecturer influencing his way into her knickers.

So the point about suggested hypocrisy towards those who seek sex with minors is not how we treat them but how we regard them, our attitude towards them. The way we treat them is to put them on trial and lock them up if convicted. Quite righlty because they have broken the law. But this law is in place to protect minors, it is not there to gratify the public's hysterical search for punishment and retribution.

Imagine living in a World where the object of your desires is beyond reach because the law makes it so! This was the unfortunate World gay people lived in for quite some time. Imagine how they must have felt! I doub't those whose desire minors are happy with their disposition, I'd guess they may feel cursed, much as an alcoholic who knows the booze will kill him but he can't stop himself. So we can't accommodate these people because we must protect the minors, but perhaps we could show a bit more compassion or understanding, so rather seek retribution we could seek to help them cope with their dilema!

Re: The Glitter has sunk to a new low.

I read this post with interest I would just like to make a comment if I may, I cannot find any sympathy for anyone who not only abuses underage girls & boys but also tiny infants, as a woman my whole being cries out that it is totally wrong & should not be tolerated at any cost, & I think most women especially Mothers would feel the same way & I may add this also applies to to men & fathers as well,
It is up to the adult in the underage sex scenario to take control & not continue & yes I do know it's difficult nowadays to tell a girls age, however I believe this is no defence in law,
Even same sex relationships have to abide by this law.
You may not like it but I think this is a natural reaction to this type of crime, why do you think Paedophiles very often have to be kept in Solitary confinement, or. well away from other prisoners?

Well of course it should not be tollerated and that is why we do not tollerate it and provide laws to deter against it and punish as appropriate. I used the term compassion rather sympathy because compassion when based on cerebral notions such as fairness, justice and interdependence, may be considered rational in nature and its application understood as an activity based on sound judgment. So rather than an emotional response it is a response based on rationality!
I think most women especially Mothers would feel the same way & I may add this also applies to to men & fathers as well.
As a father my whole being tells me that I'd be torn to shreds should anything of such a nature happen to my children, and I know this could go beyond childhood, hence my mention of the 18 year old student preyed upon by 30-something lecturer. Such emotions and cares do not preclude me from rationality though!
It is up to the adult in the underage sex scenario to take control & not continue.
Absolutely, just as anyone is obliged to control their actions in all situations no matter what urges them!
& yes I do know it's difficult nowadays to tell a girls age, however I believe this is no defence in law,
Not sure this is relevant but it is true.
Even same sex relationships have to abide by this law.
Absolutely, as homosexuals were expected to abide by the law not so long ago, but  there was much deserved compassion shown in their direction. It would be wrong for us to accept sex with a monor in the same way we have rightly accepted homosexuality in law, but we could at least perhaps consider changing the way we respond to the perpetrators!

You may not like it but I think this is a natural reaction to this type of crime, why do you think Paedophiles very often have to be kept in Solitary confinement, or. well away from other prisoners?

I believe you are right, this is a natural reaction though perhaps not a rational one! It would be natural for me to wish nasty things upon anyone who brought harm to my children, but I know this is more of an emotional response than a rational one.

The reason paedophiles are often separated from other prisoners is because prisoners seek to be a rung up on the social ladder. They seek to detract from the lowly place they hold in society by identifying a group they believe they can justifiably feel superior to. "We may be low-life but at least we are not the lowest of the low, that'll be them." And they have to shout about it and bring disorder to ensure general feeling remains this way, it also provides an ego boost if they can deflect the attention of law abiding society away from them and towards what they feel is a more lgitimate target. Much of this may be played out subconsciously but I believe that's basically what's going on.

The idea that adults should not have sex with those underage is not something that has come about in recent years, it has always existed for as long as I can remember even when a teenager

At least 50 years ago, the term 'jailbait' was common so there is absolutely no excuse for any one to consider it okay, no more than they would think mugging was.

Re: The Glitter has sunk to a new low.

With respect I think unless you have been involved ie a parent of an infant or child, I do not believe when faced with this , rationality comes into it , it's all very well saying it but doing it is another matter!.
It is every child & infants right not to lose it's innocence to a Paedophile & it's up to everyone not to allow them to continue with this evil practise within the law of course, I also believe if you do not act with emotion then these horrific crimes will continue & cease to shock.

Absolutely, which is why I acknowleged that as a father I'd be torn to shreds if a child of mine were involved and I'd guess all rational thought would go out the window! Who could expect an individual who has been touched by such to act in a completely rational manner?, certainly not me, but perhaps the wider society could deal with the subject better than it does!

It is every child & infants right not to lose it's innocence to a Paedophile & it's up to everyone not to allow them to continue with this evil practise within the law of course, I also believe if you do not act with emotion then these horrific crimes will continue & cease to shock.
Yes we believe it to be their right not to lose innocence and that is one reason why we provide for this right in law.
