Did anyone watch the report on 'temporary marriage' on BBC news at 10 last night?  It was horrific..and it left me feeling sick and disgusted. Paedophiles..calling themselves Imams. Can't print here what I would like to happen to them.☹️😡

Will people please be precise with their language so we know what we are talking about, there was no mention of pre-pubescent girls and therefore it is not paedophilia. It is certainly organised prostitution and in this for definitely exploitation; very unsavoury. I don’t know the age of consent in Iraq but it says if under 15 and unmarried then up to 10 years in jail so it seems the age of consent may be lower than ours if they are married, not sure. So yes, rather disgusting, particularly by UK standards, but not necessarily illegal. I wouldn’t recommend being a lost child in Iraq.

As you say a form of organised prostitution but a very strange one - one that seems to be set simply to assuage the conscience of those soliciting a sexual partner.

The age of consent in Iraq is indeed 15, what is surprising is that this is higher than for Austria, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Portugal - the age of consent in those countries is 14!

Lambsy...would you not describe a man who sexually uses girls from the age of nine as a  Paedophile? The report shows a man stating that temporary marriage can take place with girls from the age of nine. That is paedophilia. Those men are worse than animals. So let's not pussyfoot around it with nice words.

Quite possibly a paedophile yes but I wouldn’t know without seeing the girl in question, age is not the determining factor, pubity is. Worse than animals you say, maybe, but have you stopped to wonder that perhaps the problem is they are animals? We all are; do you think the creation of law will miraculously put a stop to what’s been natural over the previous 100,000 years or more? Apes are well known to have sex with their young, they’re at it all the time, part of life for them, so two questions, does that make them better or worse than man?, do you believe the attraction naturally born of man and woman to take a fancy to each other once pubity hits, an attraction instinctively acted upon over millions of years, can be easily suppressed by writing a law? Perhaps the problem is that we are all animals and yet we seem to think the rule of law will solve everything! So yes they break the law and yes some may be paedophiles, but I’d suggest people look a bit deeper into the foundations of the human condition before they start preaching. The worst element in this case for me is the obvious coercion, entrapment and exploitation that is supported by social structures. They are no longer virgins and so no man will want them and so they are doomed to become complicit in their own disasterous fate because it becomes the only way they can support themselves. They are tricked into it and then can’t get out; this is the real sad and disturbing part of the story!

Lambsy, I totally agree...we are all animals. You mention apes..the genetic differences between us and apes are such that over time we have become more civilised, whereas apes still behave in the way that they always have. They don't understand the concept of law and what is acceptable and what is not, but most of the human race do. I didn't suggest that any law would prevent this type of behaviour, and neither was I preaching. My post was merely an angry rant after watching a report on TV. The 'Imam' in that report was not some backward living recluse, still living life as was lived traditionally. He was wearing Western style dress, and probably had a mobile phone and all the trappings of Western civilisation, so he wants the best  (or the worst) of both worlds. The thought of the pain, suffering and degradation of any nine year girl being used for sex and the total ruination of their lives...just terrible. I just don't understand how any 'man' could behave like that. Just my opinion...disagree if you like.

Astro, I didn’t mean to suggest that you were preaching, just that we all should refrain from preaching at times because much of what is present in others is also there in us all, some are better at keeping it under control than others. All men have a capacity for violence but most keep it under wraps. Personally I don’t buy the distinction between simple savage and well dressed educated urbanite, they are all human and all have human traits developed over thousands of years. The difference is the urbanites have the rule of law, in part established to uphold the moral leanings of the society. But the law will only go so far and will identify a line not to be crossed, and for the most part people will see this as reasonable and conform, perhaps for the good of society as a whole. However just as all men have a capacity for violence we all also have a capacity for depravity; some manage this and keep it under wraps fat better than others. Hence we should not expect law to solve all the problems.

Just wanted to add, this is in part why I am more horrified at the entrapment and coercion part of the story, less biological or psychological involvement; more pure evil.

After reading the comments raging back and forth, I think the one thing missing is any comments about the teachings of the wicked "religion" at the heart of it all.

Are "temporary marriages" really the teachings of Islam or is it just individuals taking advantage of vulnerable girls and using religion as the excuse to enable this?

I'd suggest the religion doesn't teach this but they take their religion seriously, so they create a loophole to exploit. I'd suggest it's mere mortals facilitating what comes naturally to them.

It is the Popes, Kings, Priests, Mullahs, Imans - etc etc

Who 'Dictate' what the 'Word' means,
