A supermarket chain has been forced to withdraw bags of nuts - for failing to declare they may contain nuts.

"If you have an allergy to peanuts, please do not consume this product and return it to your local store for a full refund. :^O

.....honestly FSA, if a bag of nuts has be labelled as containing nuts, then this is a sad day for the human race!
26-04-2013 3:52 PM
Problem is they are called monkey nuts, not peanuts.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued an allergy alert saying the presence of peanuts was not declared on Booths' own brand packets of monkey nuts

But Monkey nuts are peanuts
26-04-2013 4:35 PM
Plus it says 'nuts' on the packet, so chances are, if you do have a 'nut/peanut' allergy, they are not going to be good for you.

Actually, they could be very good for you ... com-pen-say-shun. 😞

CAUTION - SQUIRREL BURGERS MAY CONTAIN NUTS
Now this is just plain stupidity, having to warn that a bag of nuts may contain nuts.. saying that, the bottles of water that I buy, say they can't guarantee that the water is nut free, even though no nuts go into the water!
The Darwin Awards might just open up a new category, Death by Nutter :^O ]:)

The best one I read was a label reading "Warning! Misuse could cause death or serious injury." It was stampped on the side of a machine gun!

So the child who is allergic to peanuts and knows to check anything they eat in case it contains peanuts is offered a monkey nut by a friend at school - they check the packet and there is no mention that they may contain even traces of peanuts - are they expected to know that monkey nuts are peanuts ?:|

I'm sure you are right Pixel although not everyone who is allergic to peanuts are allergic to other types of nut - peanuts I believe are actually a legume rather than a true nut, closer to the broad bean than to say almonds.
27-04-2013 12:33 PM
PS - it is rare for anyone to only be allergic to peanut. The allergy would normally extend to many other types of nuts (although not all). Therefore, outside of the home environment whilst young, children would normally be told to simply avoid all nuts. (Schools are usually (although again, not always) on top of this kind of thing as well, so it is unlikely that a child would be allowed to be handing round monkey nuts in the playground, for instance).
Having said that, when mini-Pix was at school, lots of parents still sent their little darlings in with peanut butter sandwiches, to sit at the same lunch table as children with nut allergies. :_| That was a great annoyance, which the school didn't appear to acknowledge.
I can see the obstacle regarding language and description, but in the main, most kids from a very young age would be taught to avoid anything containing the word "nut" if they had an allergy

Sorry Creeky - our posts crossed. You're right in some respect. Daughter, for instance, is allergic to peanuts, almonds, brazils (highly allergic to brazils), but is okay with hazelnuts and coconut (which is actually defined as a fruit). However, whilst very young, she knew to avoid anything containing the word "nut" in it's description. I'm sure most other children would be taught the same.

I would be more concerned about the less obvious foodstuffs that contain nuts, where the warnings are there but not as obvious to see, and other products containing say nut oils etc.
Also there is a risk of choking especially in smaller children, shall we start labeling them a choking hazard as well. when will it stop.
Think if i was allergic to a foodstuff id sure hope to be at least able to identify it in its true form.
Adult or child alike.

Very funny, especially:
"Hair Coloring
Do not use as an ice cream topping"
Hahaha
"Rowenta Iron
Warning: Never iron clothes on the body."
I did try that once, as a young girl and in a hurry to go out. Ironed the collar of my blouse (whilst wearing it). Of course, I burned my neck (quite badly) :8}
