Spiders?

It's Spider time, they're coming in.........

Have you had any?I've had five big ones come in this last week or so.

Afraid of Spiders? Do you put them outside or squash 'em?

Re: Spiders?

I have put conkers around the house, as Spiders are supposed to not like them and stay away. I don't know how true it is, but no Spiders since I put them on the windows. I used to keep Tarantula's which don't scare me, but house Spiders terrify me and are supposed to be a lot nastier. Most Tarrantula's do warn you by flicking hairs, then rearing up with their front legs before attempting to bite.

Re: Spiders?

I've read that spiders "taste" with the tips of their legs and are deterred by anything harsh such as peppermint, lemon and vinegar. You can make a dilute lemon juice spray quite easily and spray it around areas that spiders are likely to come in, much kinder than squashing them.

Re: Spiders?

Just to add to fears of the arachnophobic amongst you all  --  did you know that spiders are quite happy to be air-born?  And use air currents to spread around their habitats.

Living on the third floor, when they start coming indoors for the winter, (mine come in through the roof and squeeze through tiny gaps around pipes into the flat) they get dropped over the balcony into the bushes below.  Their immediate reaction isn't t to curl up into a ball but to spread their legs out and glide gently down.  The hairs on their legs act like wind-breaks and sails.  It's annoying when I see them land on the wall instead of a bush and promptly start climbing back up towards my flat.

Working in gardens it's very common for bits of stray web to land on my face and arms.  Small spiders spin out lengths of the stuff into the breeze and when long enough lift off to be carried away to a new home.

Even larger ones use the breeze to perform trapeze jumps covering longer distances than they could by walking.  It also makes good sense for them to use the wind  to change where they live  --  where the wind blows them it will also blow their prey.

On a sadder note, The Orb Spiders that are such a beautiful feature of Autumn mornings when their webs are covered in tiny jewels of dew are noticeably fewer this year.   A result, I suppose, of the continuing decline of our wild-life in general and in this case of flying insects,  all of which are in steep decline.

Re: Spiders?

They are indeed wonderful creatures, when you learn more about them. Those garden spiders that make the beautiful webs in the garden...there are loads of them in our garden, I would say more than  we normally get. The funny thing is, I really like those, and they don't scare me at all!  I can get up real close to them and watch them spin their webs without any fear. Totally irrational compared to the gibbering wreck that a house spider reduces me to! So far this year, there has been just one in our house. He deserved a medal for getting through all my security...instead he got squished! I really recommend Nets at any window that you like to have opened, if you don't like spiders.

Re: Spiders?

The worst thing you can say about spiders is they are messy eaters, leaving body parts and scraps of food everywhere. Bit like visiting the NW, after their weekly meat shopping, or 'roadkill' as other parts of the country call it.
