Godless UK: A quarter of Britons have no religion with Christians increasingly likely to be retired people
One in four people in Britain no longer believes in any religionFigure rises to more than a third of under 25s2011 census shows number of Christians fell by 4.1million

One in four people no longer believes in any religion, official analysis of national census returns found yesterday.

It revealed Christianity is in decline and Christians are increasingly likely to be older or retired people.

Many young people, young men in particular, appear to be rejecting religious belief altogether. Nearly one in three under-25s – 32 per cent – say they do not have a religion.

Dwindling: The number of Christians in Britain has fallen by 4.1million in the past decade

The rise of atheism has gathered pace in the decade since 2001, the census showed, a period when churches found themselves under pressure from equality laws and secular groups.

At the same time the UK’s second-biggest religion, Islam, frequently found itself on the defensive because of the actions of extremist groups.

The 2011 census showed the number of Christians fell by 4.1million to 33.2million. Of these, only a third attend church outside of weddings, baptisms or funerals.

Without religion, wouldn't all humans be like animals - just feeding, fighting, and copulating.

Religion has inspired some humans to rise above such behaviour.

So surely the religious line can't be altogether dismissed?

No ..... all humans would not be like animals.

(though some inevitably are, and of them some profess to be deeply religious, ku klux klan etc.,)

Humans have the ability of reason, logic and intelligence. The fact that some choose to act like animals is deplorable.

The idea that without some sort of ruling god passing instructions via their spokesman, telling the people how they must behave, would mean the people had no sense of what was right or any morals can easily be shown to be unnecessary.

Social groups in the pre Christian era and pagan groups in some places in the world today have their moral codes, it's inbuilt as a survival mechanism.

And a lot of people who claim to be 'Christian' are hypocrites!

I don't need to listen to anyone preaching, telling me how I should behave, I have my own morals/standards and that has served me well. I know quite a few~ so called 'Christians' that are anything but!

Once upon a time, animal sacrifice was an important part of Hindu life, Catholic priests weren't celibate and visual depictions of the Prophet Muhammad were part of Islamic art. And soon some churches in the UK may be marrying gay couples. How do religions manage to change their mind?

In 1889, Wilford Woodruff became the fourth president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints - more commonly known as the Mormon Church.

As president, he was seen as a living prophet, someone who could receive wisdom and advice from Jesus Christ. And he was certainly in need of advice - his church was in crisis.

For 40 years, Mormons had been at loggerheads with the US Congress over the issue of polygamy, which was encouraged among male believers. The government said it was illegal, and held that religious conviction was no defence.....

hi #25, strange that the US government said that religious conviction was no defence, as I understand that's why the pilgrims left England to go and live in the new world to be free of religious persecution?

Not quite as simple as that Pete, the Pilgrim Fathers were Separists who wanted to reform the Church in England - it was because of this interference in the affairs of the Church that their lives were put in danger.

So you could argue that they were as much the persecutors of a religion as they were the persecuted.

They first hit the man, thought to be a British soldier, with a car in broad daylight. Then the two attackers hacked him to death and dumped his body in the middle of a southeastern London road.

As the victim -- dressed in what appeared to be a T-shirt for Help for Heroes, a charity that helps military veterans -- lay prone, one of the two attackers found a camera.

"We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you until you leave us alone," said a meat-cleaver-wielding man with bloody hands, speaking in what seems to be a London accent.

The only reasons we killed this man ... is because Muslims are dying daily," he said, "This British soldier is an eye for an eye, a tooth for tooth."

He also said "God is great"

Well not from where I'm standing he ain't.

Religion eh!

"God is great" and then blow themselves up in a packed market place full of women and children.

This was an incredibly shocking, hideous crime committed against this poor, poor man. Truly dreadful, he must have been absolutely terrified, and most of this nation's thoughts will surely be with his family, friends and colleagues. Possibly having been involved in various conflicts around the world, to then come home to what he thought was the safety of his own country. Just awful! Words can't even begin to describe!

However, I hope the general British public of various faiths (or otherwise!) do not vilify the entire Muslim community. These two men were self-proclaimed radicalist morons, and do not represent the majority of those who belong to the Muslim faith.

why can we not blame god. if  he is our maker, any faults we have are from a bad designer.

Perhaps the blame could be said to be with the worship of gods?
