Re: Paul Gascoigne

You don't need to quote the twelve steps to me Petal, I went down that road over 12 years ago. I managed to stop drinking but I didn't follow the program to the letter, I struggled from Step 3 onwards. I haven't had a relationship with God since I was a child, I'm not a Christian, if anything I consider myself a secular humanist. But I will say that those who have such a relationship do seem to make a better fist of it than I did. Like I said it's not for everyone.

Re: Paul Gascoigne

From the article you posted Tommy..........

But he didn't choose to be an alcoholic and those who understand that would never have condemned him.

It's worth remembering that next time you see some poor guy collapsed on a park bench, nobody has the conscious intention of becoming an alcoholic.

Re: Paul Gascoigne

I destroy homes, tear families apart. Take your children, and thats just the start. I'm more costly than diamonds, more costly than gold. The sorrow I bring is a sight to behold. If you need me, remember that I'm easily found. I live all around you, in schools and in town. I live with the rich, I live with the poor. I live down the street, and maybe next door. My power is awesome; try me, you'll see... but if you do, you may never break free. Just try me once and i might let you go but try me twice and i'll own your soul. When I possess you, you'll steal and you'll lie. You'll do what you have to just to get high. The crimes you'll commit for my narcotic charms, only to feel my pleasure of hell one more time...will leave everyone around you wondering why. You'll lie to your mother and steal from your dad. When you see their tears, you should feel sad. But you'll forget your morals and how you were raised, I'll be in your conscience, I'll teach you my ways. I take kids from parents and parents from kids. I turn people from God and separate friends. I'll take everything from you, your looks and your pride. I'll be with you always, right there by your side. You'll give up everything to be with me. Your family, your home, your friends and then you'll be alone. I'll take and take until you have nothing more to give. When I'm finished with you, you'll be lucky to live. If you try me be warned this is no game. If given the chance, I'll drive you insane. I'll ravish your body, I'll control your mind. I'll own you completely, your soul will be mine. The nightmares I'll give you while lying in bed, the voices you'll hear inside your head, the sweats, the shakes, the visions you'll see, I want you to know these are all gifts from me. You'll regret that you tried me, they always do, but you came to me, not I to you. You knew this would happen, many times you were told, but you challenged my power and chose to be bold. You could have said no and just walked away, if you could live that day over, now what would you say? I'll be your master, you will be my slave. I'll even go with you when you go to your grave. Now that you have met me, what will you do? Will you let me destroy you or not? It's all up to you. If you think I love you...please, I don't. If you believe we will have fun together, you had better believe that we won't. I am here to make you suffer and cry. My only wish is to see you die. I can bring you more misery than you can tell. Come, take my hand. Let me lead you to HELL. Yours Truly, The Disease of Addiction

Re: Paul Gascoigne

Tommy, that's a powerful post.

But exaggerated surely. I mean, most drinkers don't suffer the awful consequences you graphically describe.

For example, a close friend of mine drinks 4 cans of super-strong  (9%)  lager daily.  And has done for the last 20 years, without any sign of physical or mental harm.  This shows that it's probably due to genetic make-up.  Some people can tolerate alcoholic drink, and others can't.

Like with bee-stings.  Some people, if stung by a bee, collapse in allergenic convulsions and die. But most of us just swat the silly bee, shrug off the transient pain, and carry on.

Therefore, while I respect your well-intentioned considerations, aren't you overdoing it a bit?

4 cans of extra strong lager? That's it? That's all he drinks?

I lived with an alcoholic many years ago and I wish that was all he had per day. He started the day with 3 Jagermeisters (35%) just to stop the shakes and then he filled the rest of the day with any kind of alcohol he could get his hands on while he was awake.

So I don't think Tommy is overdoing it.

There is a very big difference between what you call drinkers and alcoholics.

How dare you suggest such a thing? Many here are Quakers others reformed alcoholics, For many there is far more to life than alcohol.

I am completely sober, and I reckon the other RT watcher is as well, thats two out of three, so what about you?

Re: Paul Gascoigne

Drinking in moderation is a great joy to many; what isn't a joy to many is hearing recovered alcoholics bang on about the misfortune/s of others.  In fact I cannot think of one AA member I've ever met that hasn't bored me to tears.  Recovered alcoholics are determinted to give it the big I am rather than face up to the fact they made a bl**dy mess of their own lives and seem to think they deserve a medal for it.  Not on my watch sir.

Re: Paul Gascoigne

Thank you ravendays.Smiley Happy

You've just reminded me why I eventually stopped going to AA meetings. Far too many people putting themselves on pedestals for my liking, far too many being hypercritical because of my refusal to keep on introducing myself as an alcoholic even though I hadn't touched a drop in over 10 years. In their eyes once an alcoholic always an alcoholic. It was like a life punishment going there week after week listening to the same old stories (usually over embellished for effect) over and over again.  In the end it was time to move on, I only wish I'd done it earlier.
