Old hands or non-posters.

Come on old hands, how about coming back and making some interesting and constructive posts?

OK, so it seems certain things can't be said but that applies in many places and situations too. Being deliberately confrontationally aggressive won't hack it here now but surely there's some interesting things to say or make comment about?

To non-posters I say please post. I see all the views and wonder who the viewer is that's reading but not posting. Why not?

It's surely quite OK to post something funny or pics/animations where it's obviously relevant to what's going down on the thread but wading in with a derogatory remark aimed at a poster or pics etc which are again aimed at a poster only succeeds in either encoraging more of the same or puts off other posters.

Or course you are right, CeeDee.

Apart from the odd few posters (across all boards) who openly admit to loving a bit of a ruck, the majority of us find any kind of unpleasantness on threads a big turn off.

I'm getting the feeling that something specific might have happened on here recently that I'm not aware of so I'll shut up now because I have no idea what's gone on and with whom.

On a general note though, I still think that OPs could be more pro-active in keeping their own threads on track.

If you think someone is derailing your thread, then politely ask them to stop.

It's better than sitting there fuming in silence I suppose and it could be that the poster in question is unaware that they are annoying other contributors.

Re: Old hands or non-posters.

Now come on Logs, it's simple enough if you read ALL of the posts instead of just picking out one or two posts by me.

It was DH who mentioned hands...... so taking in to account what I've been saying about wanna-be commedians making daft, unfunny comments....... that's why I mentioned MB and his ancient song.

Re: Old hands or non-posters.

If you look back through posts on other threads, you'll see that I have (politely) pointed out things were going off topic and you'll also see the responces?

Re: Old hands or non-posters.

You'll notice ( maybe you won't ) that other than early on in his thread, I haven't made any more comments ( posts ) as to the way it has developed.........mainly because I can't be ******. THAT'S what turns people off and makes them drift away and not even bother to look back.  This place is simply NOT like real life......the REAL World out there.......it's contrived, controlled.  Normal conversations are just spontaneous, people say what they feel / believe etc. etc. and humour ( sometimes, in REAL life, quite inappropriate humour may I add ) is simple injected into the conversation..........THAT'S LIFE !!  I have hardly ever known a conversation to go completely off topic and stay there, that's just not the way things happen; it may deviate, but it does return to the original.  Imagine having a natural conversation with Family / Friends or just a group of acquaintances and EVERY time it drifted off at a tangent, somebody kept saying "excuse me, can we keep this on topic"...........they'd end up talking to themselves as far as I'm concerned and I'd sure as hell make sure I didn't end up involved in a conversation with them again in a hurry. Do you want a natural free flowing "Chat" board, or do you want some version of "Stepford Wives" with the REAL world remaining outside the Goldfish bowl that you're swimming in.

Re: Old hands or non-posters.

You're confusing a RL conversation comprised of "just chatting" with an online discussion about a specific subject.

I am sure you may have mentioned Wanna-be comedians before along with the other possible reasons for people not posting. Is it not reasonable that on an open forum which has attracted a wide cross section of users all with their own personality and point of view there will be some who irritate and others who procrastinate, there will be the odd thespian, a few political activists, communists, facists, goths, homophobes, atheists, idiots and thieves. The list is potentially endless. So if you wish to cleanse the forum and restrict it only to like minded individuals then surely that is not within any individuals right to demand. I believe that there have been attempts to open forums on that basis but they too have often failed because even with a small group of people some just cannot get along with others.

If everyone involved stopped trying to force people into a pattern of behaviour which did not fit their personality then perhaps things would be easier. No one likes inuendo and veiled comment and just about as many don't like being told how to behave or that they are in some way inferior. So the question is why do it? It is also true that newcomers wade into forums not really knowing what to expect, as a result they may say something out of order which then gets chucked back with interest and off we go. Surely it is better to give a little, take a little and understand that at the end of the day we are all human, fallable and above all creatures with feelings. Rise above the daftness and participate without extending a personal opinion on individuals whom you have never met that way things might improve and who knows we could get more than one thread a day 🙂

Yes. Well said. And with their ''own'' personality, and point.    And humour.    And even ''laid back'' like these special little fellas. Especially the one in the middle.   See attachment  Man WinkWoman Wink

cee-dee..............meant in the nicest possible way.  For somebody who registered over a year after I did, but has nearly 16,500 more post than I do; I'm not the one confusing real life with these boards.............trust me.

Re: Old hands or non-posters.

I see you were registered 7 years and 7 months ago, the ID I'm using now was registered 13 years and 7 months ago so your arithmetic is lacking somewhat?

I never trust people who say "Trust me."

Now how about fogetting personal remarks and realise that on joining specific groups there are protocols to follow. I think what some really want is to say whatever they like and the consequences can go hang.

Re: Old hands or non-posters.

When I first took up Golf many years ago I remember chaps wearing plus fours and hats, I never did but I did follow the course etiquette.
Now despite the rules we see guys prancing around in beachwear which they believe is perfectly acceptable.
On holiday some will turn up for dinner wearing speedos and flip flops, so who is right and who is wrong?

Re: Old hands or non-posters.

Well we're going to have to agree to disagree, because,as I said, the vast amount of posts you've made; implies that you'd need to practically live on here ( to the exclusion of everything else ) to make that many. There's nothing wrong with that, in itself, other than it gives one a very narrow view of the real world and how conversation develop naturally. You are undoubtedly a pillar and avid contributor of and to these boards, but conversations ( in real life ) even about specific topics ebb & flow, between remaining strictly on topic and wavering somewhat........that's just the way it is.......and as there are other sub. headings on these boards to address specific subjects, I always viewed RT as more of a general relaxed board; where conversation could sway a little more, even when discussing specific subjects. I have hobbies and pastimes that I do to a great extent as well, so I'd hardly criticize somebody else for doing theirs.......so no personal digs intended.

Re: Old hands or non-posters.

I'm sorry to labour the point but from July 2010 to date there are about 1900 days. Looking at my post count that works out at about 9 posts per day or is my arithmetic wrong?

Re: Old hands or non-posters.

I haven't pulled it apart THAT much, but I just used the figures on the left ( under the posters I/D ) off the cuff.......so breaking it down, as you have, it doesn't sound that much.......17,064 just looks a hell of a lot to me though Smiley Very Happy  anyway, what the hell.........back "On Topic"........I think the question has been answered. People come on here, it's not what they either hoped, thought or expected it would be..........so they leave !!

Re: Old hands or non-posters.

OP, there are some would be comedians on here Hell bent on injecting levity into the pot, by inserting photographs of Maximus Bygravus, and silly little emoticons.

Cloak them in sackcloth and ashes, and eject them forthwith. After all, this is YOUR thread. How VERY dare they ?
