I just changed my password due to ebay being hacked.

If this happened in late February, it is scary to think that ebay did not make it public till 21 May. How much information was leaked that will result in identity theft. Was all of the ebay sites around the world affected or just the American? How much of the data base was affected? By this, i mean is the data base in alphabetical order and how much of that alphabet was taken?

Re: I just changed my password due to ebay being hacked.

On the radio today they were saying that our passwords should be safe because they were encrypted, but other details including our home addresses were not.

So, I think the message is that we are OK to keep the same passwords, but we should move home. Smiley Frustrated

I'm surprised at how many people who join sites such as eBay input their real date of birth Smiley Surprised

creeky back in 2000 when I first joined ebay you didn't have to worry about being hacked... so putting DOB wasn't an issue. Smiley Happy

ebay have only just 'announced' it so it can't be that serious an issue.

Re: I just changed my password due to ebay being hacked.

I don't remember giving my DOB. when I registered.

Many people have problems because they don't take passwords seriously enough, often use weak ones and use the same one for different websites.

Also they don't realise that their email password is probably the most important.

Re: I just changed my password due to ebay being hacked.

Some of you probably know this already, but I'll say it again for those that perhaps don't ( every little bit helps ). Don't ask me to get too deeply into the technicalities of why, but it is the way it is. Many viruses / worms etc.etc. ( call them what you will ) that infiltrate / attack your emails, do so by methodically working their way through your "contact" list. They start at the beginning and if they get into the first one, they move onto the next. this then allows them to get into the emails of your contacts and all their contacts.......and so on. If you put the following email address as the first contact in your contact list, it can't be opened by some viruses and therfore protects the rest of the list to some extent

AAAAAAA.AAAAAAA@AAA.AAA

If it doesn't do anything then no harm done, you've just put a useless non existant contact in your contact list; but in case it does help it's worth doing.

Man Frustrated

I don't know if it's anything to do with this hacking but when I heard on the news I immediately changed my ebay password. I then went on to Paypal. There I found a transaction, which was not there yesterday, that I had not authorised. A repeat payment yearly to an unknown email address. Only for a small amount BUT if this person charges 100  people per day £5.00 yearly this guy could make a load of illicit money!

I did the neccessary change of password and reported the transaction.

Just a friendly reminder to check each transaction and report anything remotely suspicious. I need not really remind anyone, I am sure, not to open or respond to strange emails also.

It's days like this when I could happily throttle those bank Clerks that scowl at me when I say I do NOT want to use online banking!

TBH I don't remember giving one either but I guess I did because you had to be over 18 to use the site, but maybe that's changed.

Re: I just changed my password due to ebay being hacked.

I've got bad credit rating so can't use any of my cards, and my o/d's on all my banks are almost equal to that of the national debt, so if some dummy wants to steal my identity, dear God, I'd KISS HIM ON BOTH CHEEKS!!! Smiley LOLSmiley LOLSmiley LOL

I'll make a prophecy for you Frederick.

If you are in that position now, the day will come when you will find you have the best credit rating you have ever had in your life.

The snag is you will also find you have the least use for it. Smiley Happy

Hmmm ...  I'm not quite sure whether I can read between the lines on that one.  I used to annoy my daughter by teasing her about me buying my own plot of land - about ten feet square!  Smiley LOL

Re: I just changed my password due to ebay being hacked.

I once saw a sign on a church noticeboard declaring Jesus Saves!  Some comedian had written: "He couldn't save much on my salary!"

The other one which made me smile was on a noticeboard  "Jesus Lives!!  Some wag had scrawled "Shame - Easter is cancelled!"
