Forget it and move on.

How many more shows and programmes are we going to have to see about WW1??

Have we not had enough yet?

I appreciate that enough needs to be made of it to ensure that it never happers again. I also see that enough needs to be shown of the sadness that it brings to people's lives.

But enough is enough. We know that the Germans, under Hitler, was a tricky sort of chap to deal with but, by now, we've got it.

Whilst I don't always go along with Rose's take on things, I do have some sympathy with her post regarding how young people today would react if we were to find ourselves at war. Before I get jumped on and berated, I would say that most youngsters are ok, and would support their country. But there are some people who do behave as Rose has suggested, mainly in the poorer areas of the country. Lambsy has a very positive view of society, and maybe that is easier for him because maybe he doesn't come into contact with the type of people that Rose refers to. That's where I asked where he lives. I live in South Wales, a very deprived area of the UK, and I often look at some of the you do people around here and wonder, just like Rose, how they would react if we had to go to war and life suddenly got very tough for them. If they had to swap their designer trainers for Army boots!

Please excuse my previous reply it came before you posted this.

All I said earlier was it's not ALL bad, there's plenty of good.

I generally keep a positive attitude but I certainly don't have an overly positive view of society. I was raised and educated in a comprehensive school in Coventry, and I came across many deprived people who channeled their angst against myself and others. I was given plenty of reason to have a negative view of those around me but I've grown up, ventured out and met with plenty of good too!

You say yourself most youngsters are OK, but there have always been those who behave as Rose suggests, this is not a new phenomenon! And remember not everyone back in 1914 or the 1940s were too thriled about the idea of war, not all ran to the recruitment centres to do their duty.

I don't have rose-tinted glasses nor a gloomy outlook, I'm just realistic

I did a favour for someone the other day who had ran out of petrol, he said "you don't find people willing to help these days." Well you do, I did, you probably would, and there's many more like us. So yes there's plenty of rotten scum out there who I'd rather not give the time of day to, but I find it better to not concern myself with them and concentrate on the good I can find and give!

Re: Forget it and move on.

Just to add a bit.

My Dad is in his 70s, reads all the newspaper headlines and says "what is the World coming to?", "that's how it is these days". etc. He swallows all the negative hype about scroungers (who do exist) asylum seekers (who do exist) healthcare tourists (who do exist) and so on......

But the impact that such people will have on his life is negligible! He gets stressed out over nothing!

People pretend everything was great 'back in the day' and it's all falling apart now. Well no, everything wasn't great back then, you still had your troubles and low-life despite any manner of community spirit!

The single greatest threat to society today is our own mis-trust in all that's around us. We say we don't know our neighbours, no community spirit anymore, no one keeping any eye out for each other etc. And who's fault is that? Our's, all of us! People don't let their kids out of their sight, the kids don't meet others in the community and neither do we. We fill minds with ideas that the World is bad, no one is to be trusted, kids will be taken from the streets and on and on and then you wonder why community breaks down.

Well I won't stand for it, I encourage my kids to socialise, I help strangers in need, I speak to people I meet and despite my knowledge of the scum in the World I will not distrust everyone I see!

What???? What on earth was rude and not very Christian about that comment, I was just stating a fact, which in my opinion is quite correct.

The Midlands because of it's industrial areas makes t it one of the most polluted with very poor air quality in the country. I find that horrible because so many people suffer because of it with invironmental allergies of one kind or the other. When they go stay in other areas especially the coastal ones there sypmtons almost disappear. I find the pollution horrible.   xxxxxx

Getting back to what the thread was originally about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I have not watched all of the programmes but i think its an important part of our history and lots of people gave their lives and did their duty for the place of their birth!!!!!. I respect that and its a shame a few more programmes like that are not on to make younger people see what real life was about. Imagine half of the sorts we have around today being called up suddenly to fight in a war!!!!!!. Do them Bloomin Good!!!!!. Take their minds of Benefits and what their going to spend them on,,when to have their next BABY!!!!!,,, or where to get the latest lot of Smack!!!. There would be a  B****Y GOOD SHAKE UP THEN!!!!!!!!!!Woman Mad

Hi Rose, you seem to have a very dim view of the people who make up modern society, well I don't believe it's all as bad as you appear to believe. Benefits and the next smack score are only the concern of a few, and many decent families consider when they should perhaps have their next baby.

Don't get so down on societiy's ills, it's not all that bad and there's plenty of good you could focus on instead.

Hi Lambsy,,,yes your right not all people are like that, that is correct but the area i live in IS!!!. There are a lot of people who are like i described and could do with being sent to war. Know what i mean?. I wish i lived in a nicer area BUT there are worse areas too. The next smack score sort of thing is getting way out of control!!!. Their the sort who need to be sent to fight like those people did. I never thought id be saying the self same thing as my dad said when he was alive,, BUT I AM. Its very sad the way society has got. Re: Forget it and move on.

With respect I think your stereotyping the Midlands, as other posters have listed many parts that come under that criteria!.
This country grew rich on what you say is horrible many at the expense of their lives & long term health, so yes! It may not have been meant that way but it came across as snobby , unchristian ,& I may say rude! lol.

Bust, you said it was the most polluted place in the country but now just one of the most, so which fact was it you were referring to? Also perhaps you could brush up on your social skills; I'm sure it's not usually seen as good form to tell someone what a frightfully aweful place somewhere is when someone has just told you that's where they are from.

"Oh where are you from sir?"

"London",

"Oh waht a hole!, such pollution and just frightfully horrible."

"Yes well thanks for that"!

There is an industrial heartland in the Midlands but there's also loads of green pastures!

Re: Forget it and move on.

I think we are fortunate in many ways that we live in an age of electronic communication - the internet has enabled people from all nations to talk to each other and it is not as easy for propaganda to fool the general population in the way that Goering described.

(From a post I made on another thread)

"Why of course the people don't want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don't want war neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

Hermann Goering

If this country were truly threatened then I have little doubt the general population would 'rally to the cause'.  The other side of the coin though is that it is more difficult for conscription for a cause that was not seen as justified by the people to be enforced.  The politics that led to WWI would never have gained the support of the people if they had been privy to all the details.

Hi Rose, nice to hear from you. Sorry to hear things aren't so great where you live but good to hear you putting a possitive spin on things. (There are worse places) Yes some people could indeed do with being sent to war, made me smile that did. Of course it doesn't help your plight but if your Dad was saying the same when he was alive it goes to show society has always had it's troubles, it's not just a thing of today. A bit of National Service wouldn't be amiss in my view. Man Wink

Re: Forget it and move on.

There have been recent conflicts where todays younger generation have fought, and in some cases died, lest we forget that In certain wars there was little option not to fight, in some cases that could even mean being executed by your own side if you refused. As to off topic, im not averse to movement, but funny how some complain about it on one hand, and readily indulge in the other. RIP to all those who gave their lives

Re: Forget it and move on.

so the west is allowed to bomb, iran, iraq but the arab world cannot attack israel. open any pre ww2 atlas and there is no state of israel, just palastine. it matters not who says god give them a right to that land, the fact is we the west forcfully removed the palastiniands from their land, and allowed the state of israel to come into being. for me if a power attacked my country and occupied it I for one would fight for my country and remove the occupyers, was that not why we went to war, to remove an occupying force that had over ran europe? then it was hitler and his nazy party. we now have a situation in the middle east where a well oiled fighting force has air and land supremicy going well over the top in retaliation against a people that want their country back.  it also shows what hypocrates we the west are as in recent news we are going to aid and possably arm the christian arabs running scared , but dare we do the same for the palastinians.................................i thought not, as long as the US wants a middle east base israel will be safe to do as she pleases, but come the day when the US turns away, well thats when in the bible its states that a great fire will come from the east.

it all comes down to this, one of the warring sides is correct, the other has a bigger stick. work out who from that.

My apologies lambsy if my post offended you.......no it certainly wasn't intended that way. I live in the Midlands myself. Social skills?? Perhaps your right, I myself was taught not to be easily offended by things but reading your example I humbly take your point. xx
