Banning smoking in public places.

I see it's being suggested for parts of London. The start of something bigger I hope, though I am sure the smokers think it's the beginning of the end of the World.

Re: Banning smoking in public places.

Smoking is already banned in public places isn't it ?  Does it mean outside in general ?

Cars should be banned as well if its peoples lungs you worry about ,along with 20 or 30 million other sources of lung toxins in the air.

Re: Banning smoking in public places.

If all smokers didnt buy cigs for one month the government would have to use extensive media advertising to try and persuade joe public that smoking was good for you as they couldn't cope with the loss of tax revenue !!

Re: Banning smoking in public places.

I'm sick of stupid People coming out with stupid ideas, when they can't even come close to policing the laws they've got already. EVERY time I go out, in the Car, I see untold amount of motorists driving around, while using mobile Phones. Lets try sorting that one out first shall we............the sad people that come out with these "Nanny State" ideas really need to get a life AND a proper job !!...................................and yes I am a NON smoker.

Re: Banning smoking in public places.

orkhttp://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/major-new-health-report-ban-smoking-in-londons-public-parks-a...

“It would be a powerful message for the iconic centre of our city and the political heart of our country to become smoke free,” he said. “What better way to show our city’s ambition to be the healthiest major global city.”

So banning a few people having a ciggie in Regent's Park and Trafalgar Square, would result in making London the healthiest city in the world, would it ? No mention of diesel fumes poisoning the atmosphere.

Bonkers, absolute bonkers. I believe they tried that one in New York's Central Park, and people just flouted it.

Re: Banning smoking in public places.

You know what makes me laugh, in one breath they want to become more cosmopolitan; with more Cafe's and eating places having "Al Fresco" facilities, as they do in Paris, Milan, Rome, etc. etc. Then they want to tell people they can't smoke outside, over their expensive Coffee & Croissant..........................I just love little People, with little Brains, but BIG ideas.

Re: Banning smoking in public places.

Cars serve a purpose including keeping the economy going. Smoking is simply a nasty drug habit that somehow became accepted, though thankfully less so every day. Nothing "stupid" about banning people from propogating this nasty and foul smelling dirty habit by their very act of being seen to do it. Ban it to consenting adults in private.

Re: Banning smoking in public places.

I don't smoke but what annoys me is those people who are trying to give up & are using the ECigs etc are now being made to feel guilty about using those now!

So, a killer drug is OK as long as the government gets revenue, and it OK to inflict on other people at the same time?

You know, I'm old enough to remember the same arguments when they tried to ban smoking on buses, trains, planes, in pubs, clubs...Every time the smokers arguments have, eventually, been shot to pieces.

You guys really smell bad, it clings to everything you go near, and it's estimated that 80 percent of road litter comes from dirty smokers who think the norms of a civilized society do not apply to them.

There is little to no research done on how safe these are, and pretty much non on how safe they are for people standing around. Regardless, how stupid do they look sucking on that thing!

Re: Banning smoking in public places.

I think the general idea is that they are trying to prevent young people from taking up smoking. If that is the case then they should also ban people from swigging from cans of beer and lager in public. And...ban people from coming out of Greggs and stuffing their faces with pies and pasties in public. All of these things are bad for people' health....so why do they pick on smoking. And I am a non-smoker too!

Re: Banning smoking in public places.

So where would YOU like it to all end, as you say "Cars serve a purpose including keeping the economy going"...........However, the fastest you can go on ANY Road in this Country ( by Law ) is 70 mph. So NO Cars need to be manufactured, that do over that speed. Doing over that speed, just burns Fuel quicker; uses up rubber ( Tyres ) quicker etc.etc. and that's coming from a Petrol Head............but I'm sure you get my point. The list, I could compile, is extremely long and starts smacking of needing your bottom wiped by the State; like some child...........................that scenario would make you happy would it ?? Most People would like to delay THAT inevitability for as long as possible.

Re: Banning smoking in public places.

I have never got home stinking of cars and I don't know of any cars that kill about half of all long term drivers. YES, I would like to see the smoking drug banned in all public areas and restricted to an activity between consenting adults in private. That inclused out in the open.

Re: Banning smoking in public places.

Ok so they are bad for you and everyone around you they make you stink and have no redeeming points, so ban them all together. None to sell none to buy, that would put paid to that then wouldn't it.

Ban alcohol as well,  millions are spent  on alcohol abuse,  cancers and deaths, not to mention road accidents caused by drunk drivers.

By the way drinkers stink too.

Re: Banning smoking in public places.

I don't smoke, but I can't bring myself to be SO ridiculous as to think I would be harmed, to any noticeable degree, by secondary smoke from a Cigarette in a Park................in a confined space YES; but a park.............for God sake...........you need to get out more.
