So before You go bumping Your gums comparing Phone calls, while driving
With listening to Radio or chatting with other passengers etc etc
Here is the scientific research showing why -
Phone calls (handsfree or not) use Way more of the brain, than other tasks in Car
You want an example - try talking to your partner, while they are on the phone
What normally happens -
You get snapped at - they can ONLY concentrate on that phone call -
and YOU are their partner, the same happens while driving

I wouldn’t disagree that hands free calls are distracting and potentially dangerous.
I would also support the idea of banning the sale of hands free devices for what good that will do as there are already millions in circulation not including cars with them already built in.
I am however against the suggestion of making their use illegal. Any law that cannot be enforced is a bad law and how could you possibly enforce a ban on the use of hands free devices?

hmmm build cars that won't allow mobile phone use
13-08-2019 9:14 PM
The trouble is, society as a whole has come to depend on mobile phones and the handsfree is a big part of that.
My son for instance ueses his for work while in the drivers seat to and from work. 😞
I'd rather have a live son than a rich dead one 😞

It is possible to build cars with signal jammers but it’s not really practical or acceptable to stop passengers from using a mobile. Doing so would also prevent mobiles being used as a satnav or in an emergency.

hmmm ok point taken

When people end up getting charged with Manslaughter -
due to evidence of Device usage, in an accident
The message will get through
It did with seatbelts, just for fines
----------
You really should read the article
It is frightening , large areas of the brain, light up during calls,
that are inactive, listening to music, or chat
Have You tried, talking to your partner, while they are on the phone yet

The ‘message’ regarding seat belts hasn’t got through and that is an enforceable offence. Cameras and police officers can see if you are wearing a seat belt - they can’t see if you are using a hands free device, and yet still people don’t wear a belt. Of course offenders can end up paying the ultimate penalty - over a quarter of those who die in vehicle accidents weren’t wearing a seat belt.
A better example, and more comparable, is the drink driving law. Whilst prosecutions and penalties have driven down the number of people who offend the biggest change since the 60s has been in the perception of drink driving - it was once socially acceptable, it no longer is.
We need to change the way people think about the use of mobile phones when driving and I don’t see how unenforceable laws on their use will help in this.

OK, ban hands free devices !
What about single manned police cars driving along the road and hearing a shout for nearby, they cannot answer it nor if they are chasing a vehicle would they then be able to give directions to where they are or heading, the same with maybe a first responder getting an emergency shout, they would need to stop, inform headquarters they were responding then move off again.
An unlikely scenario but all these bans people shout about need to be thought out properly before everyone jumps on the bandwagon to get them implemented.

DC -
These people - like they are now - are trained to drive at any speed -
while communicating about the incident, they are involved in or heading to
---
It's not about concentrating on driving while -
Deciding with the spouse etc where to go for Dinner
(while secretly, your thinking about, having to spend the Evening with the Wifes' sisters Husband again)
Or getting an earful from your Boss , about why you are late to bent client
(while You are really thinking about ways to kill Him)
or arguing with the Girlfriend/Boy
(while You think about, the make Up Sex)
Or going over complicated matters, about Business or Your work
That ones enough on it's own -
You are now concentrating on stats, costs, measurements, timescale, spare parts
ALL WHILE YOU ARE DRIVING on Roads, with other People doing the same
------------------
We no longer 'Chat' on the phone while driving
We continue our connected lives - it's the Driving thats the add-on now
THATS WHY IT IS DANGEROUS
--------
I don't mean trying talking to your partner, who is on the pohone, while driving.
I mean when they are just talking to someone on phone and
you are standing.sitting beside them
See what happens
I did not come from a phone family, we never had one.
I still don't chat on the phone, never have, even on mobiles
My ex-wife did - She couldn't do without a House phone, never mind a Mobile
She like most others, have been wedded to a phone their whole life,
way worse now with Mobiles-
It doesn't register with them, how much concentration a call takes
But they Do all complain about their kids, being like a zombie on that Tablet
'You can't communicate with them'
---
Think about it
How many funny videos of People have you watched
Of all the mishaps of People, falling, tripping, walking off Piers , canal/river
walking straight into road
While WALKING not driving
16-08-2019 6:19 AM
bent client ?
NEXT, that should have been

It's not about concentrating on driving while
Should say -
It IS about concentrating on driving while
The last bit of post, is of course about People just walking, concentrating on phone

Hand held mobile phones were banned ages ago.
But what about other hand held things, such as as cans of soft drink, hand held food, cigarettes.
Not to mention twiddling with the radio or cd player knobs, and anything else the driver fancies twiddling with.

Quite apart from all the things mentioned modern cars are packed full of all sorts of gadgets. Look at the centre of steering wheels, all sorts of buttons for all sorts of things not to mention the screen full of info. Also, driver's doors have a panel of buttons too. Loads of things to fiddle with.
The world's gone mad, basic common sense has gone out of the window!!

Maybe there are too many buttons on the steering wheel but flappy paddles are a good innovation - no need to take your hand off the wheel to change gear.
20-08-2019 4:23 PM
Drive an auto and you've no need to change gear?

Paddle shift is far more responsive - and fun 🙂

Just another thing to fiddle with though. An auto takes care of the gear shifting.
