Anyone watch a TV gameshow called "Sell Me The Answer"?

If you don't watch it, here's a quick rundown. If you DO watch it, scroll down to the dotted line to get the question. It's a really boring question that Aggie asked me and I didn't know the answer so please don't come back with comments about how boring this is. I'm telling you that in advance so if you don't want to be bored, just move on to the next topic.

There is just one contestant playing at a time and he/she is asked questions with no multiple choice so they either know the answer or they don't. There are 10 questions to answer going from £75 up to £2,000 and after that there is some kind of Jackpot question but I have never seen a contestant get so far.

OK, going back to the question, if the player doesn't know the answer, he/she can ask a group of about 60 people, known as the Traders, to "Sell me the answer". They all start screaming "Pick me. Pick me" and the player eventually picks one.

Now, there are 2 amounts of money in the show. One is anything from £75 to £2,000 depending on how the player is doing and the other is the Trading Pot. The trading pot comes into play once the player has picked a Trader to help with a question. The two of them engage in a battle of nerves with just 30 seconds on the clock with the trader trying to get as much as possible out of the Trading Pot and the contestant trying to spend as little as possible. If they make a deal, the Trader is asked for an answer and sometimes he/she knows the answer and sometimes they don't. They just said they knew in order to get the money from the trading pot which is theirs to keep. If they know the correct answer the contestant goes to the next level and cash equal to the question is added to the Trading Pot. The player does not have to accept the trader's answer and can choose one of their own. They can take as long as they like to hmmmmm and Ahhhhh but once they press a button, the answer is locked in and can't be changed.

If the player gets a question wrong, he/she leaves with nothing.

The money in the Trading Pot can't be taken home by the player.

The only people getting any cash are the Traders if they successfully negotiate a deal.

...............................................................................................

So what is this dealing all about?

Why is the player trying to beat the Trader down?

It's not the player's money and there's no way that he/she can take home the cash in the Trading Pot.

Why not just say, "Yes, take it all"? Knowing that more cash will go into the pot if the answer is right.

I just don't get it.

Does anybody know why it is?

Cheers,

Steve.
