David Cameron last night defended his decision to spend millions on Baroness Thatcher's funeral - and dismissed extraordinary Labour claims he was using her death for political gain.

In a series of media interviews the Prime Minister said it was right to mark Lady Thatcher's death with 'some fanfare' given her huge achievements.

Mr Cameron did not dispute reports that the funeral could cost as much as £10million, but said it paled into insignificance compared to what she had contributed to Britain.

It would be interesting to see exactly how the ten million pounds figure was arrived at.

How much is 'new spend', how much would have been spent anyway and how much is simply shoving money from one government department to another.

And of course an estimation of the extra income to businesses in London on that day, money spent on travel, food and drink etc.

My mum is a star of a lady, worked hard all her life, took very good care of my brothers and I, has spent most of her life caring for others, her kindness is hard to be matched. Who will pay for her funeral? The gov? NO, us we will and she is ten million times nicer than Thatcher but, if we wanted to go lavish on her funeral WE would have to pay the costs not the damn tax payer!

Somebody wound everybody up something lovely the other evening.  Everybody was raving about how much the funeral was costing the tax payer, when one ol boy laughed his head off.

"I'm a pensioner - I don't pay taxes!  Ha, ha, ha!  I've got me bus pass, me flask  me cheese and tomato sandwiches and all the time in the world.  I'm going to go down there and make a full day of all the razzamatazz.  God bless Margaret Thatcher!"

£10,000,000 pound = cost of 1 hours 48 minutes of interest repayment on the National Debt.

A Debt that is forecast to increase by £114,000,000,000 this year.

It's like someone with £10,000 owing on their credit card spending another 6 pence.

No it's not sensible to increase your debt when you owe that much but agonising over such a small spend when the time could be spent far more practically working out how to really reduce spending is a pointless exercise.

The point of the post was not to justify the spend but to give an idea of how much debt we are drowning in and what a tiny amount the figure of £10 million is in comparison to just the interest we are paying on that debt.

I really fear that if this is not addressed then despite the current state of the economy at the moment we will be looking back in 10 or 20 years time and thinking of it as a "golden age".

If international interest rates rise from the approx 2% rate we are managing to borrow money at the moment to the historical average of 5 or 6% then in simple terms we are in real trouble - interest payments alone would be nearly twice the defence budget and approaching that spent on education!

As a percentage of GDP we owe more than Greece, Italy, Portugal or Spain.

 Bet a fiver cameron wouldn't get 10 of her achievements if grabbed and asked without brief ,lying rotten prune, I was considering voting for him next election if IDS left but no chance now...UKIP is all I'm left with at mo.
