DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi all, pippy_oak here, posting under my brand new user name. Hopefully, Richard will pin this thread, as it seems a nice tidy place to pose specific questions about a book (Is it a 1st edition, what's it worth, where to find it etc. etc.) Don't just come here with a question. If you think you have the answer, then let's hear it.

Or we could just mooch around and learn a few things.

Cheers

Paul

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Gosh, ... I'm excited, as well. I scan-read the Wikipedia piece, and looked at Eclectic's photos, but didn't really understand what I was looking at.

How did the final photo confirm that it is the Geneva Bible?

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

I can now envisage hoardes of us rummaging through car booters boxes in search of a Geneva bible.

*note to self...must check what a Geneva bible looks like*

Mrs Bee. The wording of those verses shows the difference between the Geneva Bible and the King James. It couldn't have been the KJ as it wasn't published until 1611.

One of the Wikipedia links gives a scan of every page of your bible for comparison. Excellent reference to make sure it's all there.

Isn't it amazing to have a book that was printed when Elizabeth I was on the throne!!!

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Yes, ... I liked the bit which said that this is the Bible which Shakespeare could have read. (or words to that effect) I must go back and look at the links ... thanks.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Thank you, Manor House. It’s less a matter of celebrating, more a matter of changing my underpants at regular intervals. I have always loved its age, and never considered value until now. (Publisher – “IMPRINTED AT LONDON BY Chriftopher Barkar, dwelling in Powles Churchyard at the figne of the Tygres Head” is all it has on the title page. Will count the pages later, to see if they are all there (as if I would know…) And of course I will keep the board up to date, if I ever do more than stick it back on the shelf.
I bought, at the same time, a larger, leather-bound book with a huge lock and chain to keep it private. “The (something) of Erasmus” I think it was called – dated a few years later. (Sold that for a hundred quid, during a time of poverty – and always thought it was a bad mistake…)

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Between the first issue of the Geneva in 1560 and the first issue of the King James in 1611 there were numerous editions of the Geneva, the Bishops Bible (1568) and various editions and the Douay-Rheims (1582) and various editions.

Does your copy have a plain or elaborate binding? The difference can be several thousand pounds. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Whomever you may murder, there's no police like Holmes.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

The 'something' of Erasmus was probably an earlier book pointing out the errors in an earlier bible.

Hard to say on the binding, Steve. It may have been recovered at some stage, or it may have had two layers of leather to begin with. The top layer has worn away slightly at the edges, exposing the layer underneath. Three lined box front and back, with fancy thingie at either corner, otherwise plain. Six raised bands to the spine.

Yes, I got quite excited to start with, but now that old “I don’t really want to part with it” syndrome is kicking in – which is why my house looks Albert Steptoe’s place.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Then here's another loop to jump through...

I honestly don't know what was meant by 'elaborate' binding, but, where a reasonable price for a plain binding is around the £1,000 to £3,000 mark, for the 'elaborate' binding the numbers are more like £8,000 to £12,000

Loan it to a museum. It remains your property, but if something happens to it, it's their insurance that goes up the following year.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Paul, or any of you knowledgeable chaps, please take a look at Samarg's book (link to thread, below). I'm sure it is in the wrong category, and wonder if he can change it. It's only got a day to run.

I couldn't find this book at Addall, but found similar ones from the same publisher: Sandle Brothers Ltd.
