Ebay doesn't support the sellers

I have a buyer who purchased an item from me. Despite me listnig it correctly as 'Japanese Language' and the pictures confirming the item is factorty sealed / new and Japanese, because the buyer purchased it thinking it was English, I'm now being forced to accept the item back and issue a refund of £120!?

The buyer has opened the return with the following heading 'Not as described / Not as pictured' yet in the body of their message says the following, "hello, i recived these books , and realised that they are in chinese, as this item was purchased in the uk, i was ubder the impression thet they woukd be in english , can i have a refund , to purchess the correct editions ?"

I followed the process to contact the buyer

Politely confirmed there was no issue with my listing

Spoke wih Ebay who assured me I have done everything correctly with item description and accepts no returns.

Within my message to the buyer I have asked if they have open the factory seal around the books and had no response?..

Why am I being made to refund the buyer and accept a return for something that will not be in the same state as sent?

Ultimately, I am now potentially back with a NON new item and having to maybe sell at a much lower price!? Customer service is extremely poor in this scenario!

You did have Language Japanese in Item Specifics, but it would have been more visible in the Title.

You have to assume that buyers are 5 year olds and describe accordingly.

ebay always side with the buyer as they cannot 'see' the item

if you had written in the description that the item was in Japanese the buyer wouldn't have bought the item

Again, the pictures are CLEARLY visible to show the items are not English. The item specifics CLEARLY state it is Japanese. I've even had a 2 calls with eBay (recorded) who have confirmed they can see its sealed too

yes, but you have no proof that is what the buyer received, ebay always side with the buyer as you cannot prove that the item in the picture is what you sent

you could have saved yourself all this grief just by writing in the description that they were in Japanese!

But the buyer has stated they HAVE received what was displayed but it was NOT what they wanted and it was THEIR error. Seriously, what use are replies like yours to my initial question? Jeez

I have just selected one of your current listings.

Whilst the item specifics state they are in Japanese language nowhere within the item description you don't mention this at all.

I would have thought listing something other than English language on the eBay UK  would be better with it clearly stated within the main item description.

As someone else has pointed out not all buyers read item specifics and read the seller's main body item description.

By just putting a few extra words on a listing will save you loosing money in the future.

Yes going forward I will do this, but again, this does not answer my question now of WHY should I have an item returned no longer in the state I sent it in (NEW) because someone has decided to remove the factory seal when the pictures and once received would clearly indicate its not English. This does not even justify someone buying this who would want it in English despite it being Japanese!!!? (if we all decide not to ever bother with item specifics again!!)

Also, are you going to sit there are reply if I had stated they were Japanese in my description, yet the item specifics said English?! Would I win a debate in that scenario?

I think the original post confirms that..

Common sense says if you are listing something on a United Kingdom website you would put the fact in the full item description highlighting the fact the text was Japanese and not English.

Or is that just me using common sense.

I'm not disputing people do or don't read item specifics.

My question is, if it is stated on the item's page correctly with the tabs Ebay themselves prompt you to use to sell items, why is this not enough? Why does this then make myself as the seller should fall victim to receiving a brand new item back that is no longer new?

I feel pretty sure the community would give their two sense and say I was still wrong if my OP was I had described the item as Japanese in the item specifics and nothing in description (if they were English and being an English seller and all) ...

Of course I could have listed it myself in the description and obviously will do moving forward. I'm just highly sceptical of buyers using this to their advantage, swapping out items and sending back others to screw a seller over. Bottom line I have learned eBay automatically side with the buyer and not the seller

As above,you didn't describe the item properly and your buyer is quite right to request a return at your cost.

You will not only have to pay for the return,refund the whole of the original payment but you will lose the paypal fee's as well as they are no longer refundable.

When i first started selling i quckly learnt that i had to descrbe everything as if i were trying to describe it to Stevie Wonder over the phone.

Don't assume anything when it comes to potential buyers.

What's the point in these item descriptions?.. Also, what right would the buyer have to open it from its factory seal when the packaging would be clear, very clearly showing the pictures / text to be non- English

the point is you have to state in the written description as well as filling in the item specifics


the item specifics are for the search engine to find and show your item to potential buyers,

the item description is what the buyer reads to find out about the item

if you don't state something in the description that is that important the buyer will win a not as described case

Just admit your listing could have been clearer, and then you wouldn't be in the position you are now.

And a buyer has a legal right to break seals or open a package to check its contents as long as the handling is kept to a minimum.

It does say Japanese language in the item specifics, but as the member has said they are Chinese, so can claim SNAD (even if mistaken as to the language). The OP should really have made it clearer in the description and title that they were in Japanese, we know how few members look at item specifics.

I got paid on this situation finally and all got resolved once I had spoken to someone higher up at ebay. Happy New Year 😉
