As a small business who have used ebay for over 20 years, we are reading these posts because we have so little to do re sales on this particular platform since the seller protection fee was introduced on 4th February but PLEASE sellers, let's be constructive with our views, comments and criticisms of ebay as it is the only way we are ever going to make any impact.
Yes, ebay in the UK is declining compared to other platforms, and their rampant prime time advertising is making little difference but why is this??
Our view is that it is first and foremost because they are trying to mimic other platforms instead of being what they once were - the first and leader in this sector. It is NOT the cost of living crisis causing this as we have seen from previous economic shocks that this sort of situation always steers more buyers to platforms that sell pre owned goods. They look for good second hand items that are cheaper than new.
Ebay need to go back to basics and rebuild the platform from scratch to be more as it once was - a market leader with an even playing field for both small business and private sellers.
1. Dispose of simple delivery (which, thankfully does not affect us as we are a business, with a Royal mail business account).
2. Scrap promoted listings which simply doesn't work , has ruined the search engine facility, and is costing sellers dearly for something that contributes nothing whatsoever to sales.
3. Scrap buyer protection - buyers were always protected to the hilt and this fee gives them no more protection than they had previously. It really was the last nail in the coffin as buyers do not understand that it is only on private seller sales. When levied on auction items buyers are unclear as to what they are actually paying. (To say that only buyers are paying this 'Fee' is also untrue as sellers are having to lower prices in order to get the sales, so ultimately the sellers bear the cost)
4. Simplify. Everything has become so complex now it is little wonder that people are choosing other platforms to sell on. The computer staff at ebay need to realise that not everyone is computer literate and just because someone realises 'we can do this now' doesn't mean its a good idea to do it!
Simple but safe is the key to getting buyers and sellers back on board - that is what ebay need to be advertising on prime time TV.

Completely agree with all your points. I was a private seller for 20 years and have stopped selling and am no longer browsing as a buyer because of BPF and SD - these were really the last 2 straws that broke the camel's back!
When I was selling I did have to reduce prices when BPF kicked in as I was selling mainly low price items no longer wanted and then BFP was too much so I indeed did lower prices to get a sale to shift my items on.
I have stopped selling because of SD - there is nothing Simple about it - ebay have not taken into account that sellers are all different, different ages, different circumstances, different location - not all can or are willing to use SD because it does not fit in with their current lives whether it is location or computer literacy.
Ebay should go back to the basics indeed, it was marvellous in the beginning, and now all they have done is copy exactly what Vinted have done.
I will not be selling elsewhere
, and I will not be browsing on ebay anymore as the search engine is dreadful now and doesn't make any sense.
Such a shame, very disappointed to put it mildly.
Seeing their FREE TO SELL adverts everywhere does make me angry though.

Agree with everything you've said. I would also add STOP FIDDLING. There are several current threads on the forum about how small things have been fiddled with and now don't work as easily as they used to. They must have people whose sole job it is to find things to fiddle with.
However, no matter how many of us call out for ebay to return to sanity, it ain't gonna happen. They've got a one-track mind as to where they're going, and they don't mind who falls off along the way. It will only change if their vision makes ebay crash and burn, but by that time it will be too late. But who knows, it may succeed, although it will be without the people who have defected to other platforms due to the current idiocy.

"... as it is the only way we are ever going to make any impact."
Sadly, we are never going to have any impact at all. eBay will do what's best for its business model, and nothing else. It's clear they don't care whether private sellers stay or go, and as long as they're raking in the profits from business sellers' transactions that won't change.
I've pretty much given up... I'm listing my records on Discogs, and the other small stuff will probably end up at the charity shop. If things go south for eBay then things might change, but I'll not be holding my breath.

I hate to be pessimistic, but I agree with you ☹️
Ebay don't care if we go or stay; they're confident they can replace us with new, young, fashionable and more accepting types. (younger generation who are used to how V inted works and have no idea how easy it used to be on ebay....)
But I think the OP does have a good point about ebay declining in ways it *didn't* decline, in other 'cost of living crises'.
I believe one of the reasons for that is the explosion of Social Media. (Obviously selling things on farcebook is easy , albeit a bit of a scam-pit!)
But the current bubbling froth *on* social media about ebay's changes is new.... Yeah they'll be a lot of exaggeration, misunderstanding and total boll**ks about it as well, but many people will just see the message 'ebay is carp now', won't read any further and go somewhere else on line to shop. So the OP is right, in that this will hit businesses as well as private accounts...

The prime time advertising is showing a couple selling ghastly items that they obviously despise. I don't see how this will attract buyers - will buyers be motivated to log onto eBay buy tat that someone else doesn't want? I don't think they will be ... and what about the bit at the end when she looks at the dog? Does she hate her dog? If she does, she won't be able to sell it on eBay, it's a banned item. Poor dog. My heart goes out to it.
Etsy shows me super things that I might like to buy. Maybe eBay's advertising agency should take a leaf from their book.

But I always laugh at the eBay TV ad, the last line before the eBay tag line is "Don't even think about it" . Just listen 😉.
It makes me think how true nowadays.... 😅

The trouble with just wanting to attract the younger generation is that they are minimalists. Apart from clothes and tech they don't have much to offer. Their mantlepieces and shelves are bare.

That’s not true
theres plenty of dirty cups and glasses they haven’t bothered to take to the kitchen 🙄

Awfully quiet on here today
maybe it’s just me though (refreshing refreshing wanting to read a lot about what’s happening )
and other people actually have lives
🤣

Funnily enough, I was sent an ebay survey today on my personal account. They wanted to know why I was so dissatisfied with selling on ebay and I actually made the same 4 points in my response (albeit in a different order). After over 20 years selling as both a business and a private seller, my eye rolls at changes now has me voting with my feet. I am buying elsewhere and come the end of the year, the bulk of my business will be moved off ebay as I feel I no longer have a modicum of control of MY business and I truly believe that ebay will try and push SD on businesses although I am happy to be proved wrong on that one.
My private sales have dropped off a cliff but at the same time, so have my business sales so the latest tinkering appears to affecting the site as a whole. Sales have highs and lows as standard but this is different and completely out of character on a 20+ year history.
I also used to love bidding on those 99p start auctions but now I know it won’t be 99p plus fair postage but almost double at the start and a forced delivery courier dictated by ebay (Evri is NOT preferred choice in my area, chances of receiving the item is slim or damaged if it does arrive). Ebay sure knows how to suck the fun out of ebay.

What ebay are doing is so much worse than the other place. A buyer from the other place would notice that here the fixed element of the buyer tax is per item not per other, tends to be higher anyway, markups are being added onto the postage price and there are no bundle discounts or combined postage. Users there are not stupid. Postage there for a parcel starts at just £2.29.
As I get more used to buying and selling at that place it just makes it more obvious how badly ebay have messed themselves up.

I think the minimalist trend is partly through choice, but also through necessity because so many young people live in rented accommodation. The fewer possessions you have, the easier and cheaper it is to move.
Also, a friend may allow you to sofa surf between rentals, but they probably won't want to house your twelve boxes of crested china.

I mentioned this advert on a thread last year, when the free to sell for privates coming into force. The ugly ornament was mentioned.
In the last series of Big Brother, the other free to sell site was showing young people selling off funky clothes and excitedly being received by another young person.
So what does that message say about EBay. The site is full of stuff nobody wants ??? rather than them selling something that everybody wants…

I agree with you 100%, especially on promoted listings and simplify. I will also add one more, stop messing things up, if something was working for a long time, why change it. Stop implementing 20 changes at once, if you implement to many changes on the same time, you can't really tell which one is working and which one is not, plus is resulting in never ending glitches.
