Why Ebay Is Dead and Why I Am Leaving

Like many, I am personally sick of ebay and their BS. This simple delivery thing is an absolute joke. I selected it recently thinking "we'll I'm gonna be forced soon I better test it". What a mistake. I have to go to an EVRI drop off? They aren't near me, I work right next to a RM, DPD, UPS drop off. So now I gotta drive over town like a *bleep* to post a small item? I did this, it's been 3 days since actual signed for delivery by buyer and it tells me on my account that the funds will be available tomorrow? Absolute BS. Know the other huge thing I hate about these times? Every app, every program, ebay included, they are obsessed with changing stuff every 5 minutes. Ebay is nasty now trying to find simple stuff like current balance, what you are selling, they listing page is all nasty, they are obsessed with changing stuff and moving the cheese all about the shop just so someone has a job to do. If it aint broke don't fix it. Do you know that VW Golf internal door handles have been the same since the 80s because they don't change something that works. We need more of that, and less of this BS. Another is the idiocy that comes about if someone lies and says they got a damaged product, then ebay refund them without question and they just get to keep your item? Absolute joke.

Another huge reason I am leaving here is HMRC sticking their nose in. If I sell a camera, I can easily tip over 3K, which means they want me to pay tax on something I bought and was taxed already? No, they can do one that BS. I'll just sell through other places MPB, vinted, gumtree, anywhere but here to avoid all this *bleep*. 25 years of selling, and I am done.

Whilst I agree that there are a LOT of things wrong with ebay at the moment, the National Insurance issue isn't one of their own making and it's not alone.  Whichever ecommerce platform you go to, they will ask you for your NI number if you reach the threshhold.  So that applies to MPB and Vinted, but I don't think gumtree because they don't deal with payments.  If some platforms haven't yet asked even though some sellers have already reached the threshhold, it's probably because the platform isn't required to send the number to HMRC until 31 January for the current calendar year.  HMRC is required to obtain National Insurance numbers because of a joint decision by the multinational organisation OECD.  If you're only selling your own personal items that you no longer want, it's very unlikely that HMRC will be interested in you, let alone raising a tax bill on you.

HMRC said did they not, that anything over 3K. I can be selling stuff in my house (especially photographic equipment) and it come to over this? If you know something else then that's fair enough (and good) but I don't see HMRC as being reasonable. Perhaps HMRC should consider forcing Amazon, Starbucks and all the rest of these companies to pay their tax due, then they wouldn't have to play about chasing individuals for a couple a hundred quid.

Whether it's ebay's fault or not, it's just another nail in the coffin in the modern world.

If you don't have a convenient Evri drop-off point just switch it off and use Royal Mail.

The threshold for Capital Gains Tax is £6,000, not £3,000 and applies to single items not a yearly total.

Okay fair enough I checked today and it says 6K and no limit to yearly total so the other poster is slightly wrong in the assumption of yearly totals. I swear I read this last year and it was. Also with simple delivery I was under the impression you now can't switch it off or opt out, so how can I select RM? Many posts about this...

Opt out here in your account Postage Preferences:

Or you can deselect a courier here:

When you list something towards the bottom is a Choose Couriers button.  Just click that.

From your Summary page you can also click Account > Postage Preferences and then Edit at the right-hand end of the Simple Delivery line.

Because people had read the wrong thing, or just saying what they have been told even though it is wrong. Many of the threads on here are echo chambers, its best to use this place and then double check the actual answers you get as many sadly are wrong, that's why it needs an unhelpful button.

You can't opt out of using Simple Delivery.  It's now mandatory across the site, although a lot of categories are still not eligible or exempt.  (Jewellery is one.)

You can choose not to use Evri and only post with Royal Mail.

You have to use Simple Delivery in most cases but can choose whether you use Evri, Royal Mail or either.  A lot of the complaints about it are from people who either haven't bothered to read the information provided about it or have done so but failed to comprehend it.

There are genuine problems with very small, low value items and ones that are too big/heavy for either Evri or Royal Mail.

Because you can't opt out.

You can opt out of using one of their Simple Delivery methods though - Evri or Royal Mail.

You'll still be using Simple Delivery for the remaining carrier though.
