Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

I’m a member for 14 years - I have today complained fiercely to EBay with regards to 4% + 75p charge on each item purchased as we all know this is a Back Door way of recovering the Seller Fees which were scrapped recently - Buyers already have adequate protection - as to payment 2 days after delivery - we’re at the mercy of Royal Mail to scan all  items when collected (not guaranteed) 😡

Fellow  members I urge you to let your disproval known - SHAME ON YOU Ebay😡😡

@papso22 If the system hasn't updated you get the money after 14 days.

Your countless calls to CS will just result in them telling you that, it won't get you the money any quicker.

That is for untracked...

Applies to tracked items without a delivery confirmation aswell:

  • For untracked deliveries, or tracked deliveries with no delivery confirmation signal, funds will be available 14 days from the order date.

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

Totally agree, their greed knows no limits. Make buyers pay a "protection" fee they dont want and hang onto sellers money for at least 4 days, millions in their bank account which belings to sellers.

If that is the case then it is even worse! ...Why would they include that if no delivery confirmation for 14 days on TRACKED post! ... This gives them a get out as they know that the system is not working and will probably NOT update on a percentage of tracked post... therefore they are garnering more interest on OUR funds!

The last time I checked, I was not an investor in eBays ventures!

Their new advert of " Free to sell on eBay" has taken on a whole new meaning...

Sell FREE to eBay! is probably more apt!

Edit... spelling

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

Personaly I think Ebay need a new tierd system

You can't start a business from day one of an idea, there's time to make it work and that's where ebay fail to support startups.

Personal - free with no fees but constrianed to 50 items a month.

Micro Business - Sames plan as personal but confirms to Business Seller Rules, say 500 items a month

Business - Xthousand turnover per year

Power Business - XXthousdand turnover per year

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

twaddle.  im not a business, im a retired individual selling stuff, sometimes new items i buy, sometimes used items i have and no longer need.

you can misguidedly blame me \ others for ebays new policies, but, im not the reason they have changed, that is really only known to them, and, is most likely pressure to increase profits and therefore value of the business \ share price.

i was quite happy selling with ebays high fees, but, if im going to be forced go up another level in fees (and monthly charges for being on the platform) then i'll simply sell stuff on Amazon where i know where i stand and things sell much much quicker and for higher prices.

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

For me, the biggest issue as an occasional seller, is the expectation that you send the item before you receive payment. Crazy!

I generally sell items out of my collections that are surplus, some of them can be quite valuable and there is absolutely no way I'll be sending anything without the payment being in my account, so I guess that's the end of my days selling on eBay since 2005 (in fact before than under a different account, so probably 2001).

That is the biggest issue here amongst what were some of the original users of eBay, people buying and selling bits and pieces out of their private collections / adding to them.

You never let go of an item without receiving the money first.

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

I expect ebay will be much less keen to refund a buyer when the parcel was delivered and then stolen than they have been when the seller was paying.

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

Ebay are effectivly providing and ESCROW agreement, may be better if the said that.

Effectivly funds are held in ESCROW until parties are both happy.

It's a common business practice and in a way makes sense, but somewhat alien to many,

ESCROW is used far and wide for other means inclusing holding Interlectual property "In Trust"

Big question though, how impatial is EBAY vs a full ESCROW service...

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

it sounds odd, but, its not.  it very much depends on what is being sold.  i frequently buy stuff from actual auctions, usually company liquidations or stock clearances from AV kit hire companies etc.

sometimes i end up with new boxed items (if im hiring a van to collect large stuff like projectors for a stage show im doing, i might as well add others items yo help me pay for the van hire).

i have found that such items sell for higher prices than my listings on Amazon, and, the Amazon method is "drop the stuff to there warehouse and walk away'.  fees are normally 10%, plus £25 pm membership.    they store it, pack it, send it.

I’ve asked before, but not spotted any comment, but to me it seems ILLEGAL to keep my money for 2 weeks when the buyer has already given me feedback on day 3?

If you've agreed to ebay's t&cs by continuing to use the account then I don't see why it wouldn't be legal.

Someone pointed out that under UK law it is illegal for ebay to hold on to seller's funds and use those funds to make money e.g. via interest. Yet this does seem to be their stated aim.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.  I don't understand how sellers can operate on ebay with finances so close to the wire.  It only takes one chargeback and your bank balance is now lower than you started.

You've never had a trade go sour, either because you screwed up (didn't notice a hairline crack, didn't pack defensively enough) or because you got an evil buyer who fancied a freebie?  In that case you're very very lucky.  Stick around these forums and read some of the tales of woe.

I agree

I used to wait to dispatch until funds are processing with a date showing, or, received.

Ebay is NOTHING like Escrow service.  You said it yourself, escrow needs both parties to be happy.  Ebay just backs the buyer in almost all cases.  You had a return and found you'd got a box with a piece of wood with nails in it?  Welcome to ebay-world, where ebay think that's what you may have sent the buyer, and you're forced to refund.

True.  That's why I don't ever sell for less than the cost of my postage.  But what do you count as 'costs' when I bought something 30 years ago?

I'm not worried if you send me a muppet badge!  🙂

Also I don't want to sign up for any arrangement where I have to pay a subscription, or listing fees.  Many years ago ebay charged listing fees on everything except 99p start auctions.  What did I do?  I started everything at 99p of course!  Sometimes only got one bidder, but in those days most auctions got plenty of action.

Really?  One can sell individual used items on Amazon these days?  Years ago I used to sell some of my books on Amazon, but I thought everything else is big box shifters.  I'd like to know if I'm missing out.
