I’m a member for 14 years - I have today complained fiercely to EBay with regards to 4% + 75p charge on each item purchased as we all know this is a Back Door way of recovering the Seller Fees which were scrapped recently - Buyers already have adequate protection - as to payment 2 days after delivery - we’re at the mercy of Royal Mail to scan all items when collected (not guaranteed) 😡
Fellow members I urge you to let your disproval known - SHAME ON YOU Ebay😡😡

so far collection will not be offered using simple payments this may change though. but when you list a item you can opt out of using simple payments...apparently only till march when it is mandatory

So as a seller of a lost/damaged item I get to keep the claim from the carrier? I doubt it..
This nonsense protection doesn't make sense as most items are posted with enough cover (or at least mine always are) so the real chance of loss is if the seller refuses to provide a refund and ebay are unable to recover it from them which will probably only affect the newish accounts opened under false ID etc.

You won't be able to claim from the carrier as you won't have a contract with them.

With the buyer protection fee the seller will still expected to claim from the carrier as ebay's default will still be to recover losses from the seller so ebay are themselves for that fee only covering a tiny possibility of loss on an established ebay private seller account.
Now with a private seller + simple delivery then yes the seller will not need to claim and ebay will have been paid twice for the cover - once under the buyer protection fee and again as part of the simple delivery fee unless simple delivery includes no cover from the carrier (but then surely a carrier needs an incentive not to break and lose stuff?).

I would love to let them know but the help bot does not listen and the help page is on a loop. If you are lucky enough to contact them it would just be a help desk. And so far they just appear to send standard texts.

I'm curious how the buyers fee will mesh with the best offer option? Eg when a buyer makes an offer of say £10 for an item, will this in fact mean they'll be offering less to the seller? Will that reflect in the amount the seller sees as the offer? Will my counter-offer show differently? Or are all the fees absorbed into the separate postage charge? So they offer £10, I accept and will actually get £10, they will instead pay £10+fee+postage??? Too many posts about the changes on the forums the last couple of days, I need to stop reading them I think! My brain is not coping... That's without thinking about Simple Delivery!
04-01-2025 3:30 PM
i googled and it just said no additional fees to sellers if someone uses best offer option, god knows but ive got a banging head with it all
04-01-2025 3:33 PM
Yeah, me too, thanks! I wonder if Royal Mail are geared up for everyone on eBay switching to Tracked 48... I sense a meltdown coming for them too!
04-01-2025 3:38 PM
well you know it there has been talks that royal mail wanted out of delivering letters and 1st and 2nd class standard deliveries as apparently there is no money in it only for parcels or tracked services so its all odd now ebay really want to do away with those options too.
if anything royal mail may be edging even closer to getting rid too with this happening.
world has gone mad, its like things get worse for the normal person and just when you think things are on the up like free selling fees for everyone...bam we are pushed to the bottom yet again...same with the government

I have taken all my items off sale. I hope it helps

Hi, never used this section of ebay before, so be gentle... Private Seller, and yes I am, selling most of my collections. Anyway, just think this is a huge error for ebay.
When the seller charges were in places it meant that a chunk of money would be lost to the seller. Hey he, there you go, that's what you get if you sell. However, trading the seller fees as now buyer fees (basically copying Vinted?) it means that I, the seller, still lose out.
If the advertised price incudes the Buyer Fee, then I will have to adjust the price to compete. So I still lose the money I was paying in seller fees.
Hope that makes sense.
As to the holding of funds until an item has been delivered, well I'm not certain of that. And by that I mean as ebay is acting as the processor then surely they have a duty to ensure all funds are processed asap. Regardless of delivery. I don't see how holding onto funds aids the buyer? I know it doesn't and this is just ebay being [MGB] . Protection is provided by tracked and insured deliveries, plus honest buyers.
I am going to look into the Payment Services Regulations and see what it states regarding holding of payments.
As for me, well I'm going to be removing all my sales 3rd Feb, have a little break, look at other selling options etc etc.
eBay, trust us, we can drive away customers faster than Ratners Sales Rep [and yes, you'd have to be old to get that reference]

i took the few things i had off but i was to list 4-500 coasters and badges i bought over the years which now i will not because i was to charge 3.50 for the coasters and badges as they are not worth more just things i collected...but with the fees and the cost of tracked delivery that makes for 1 coaster total cost to the buyer about £7.10
how rediculous
04-01-2025 3:52 PM
Oh yes you are correct the seller is the only one losing out really no matter how we look at it. either we want the price we list it for but then risk not selling as the fees are added on the other side but not to mention having to use tracked delivery if we want to see the money before 2 weeks.
apparently come march when this system is enforced tracked delivery will be the only option anyway as all private sellers come march will be forced to use the simple delivery.
its totally ridiculous.

There are just too many unanswered questions from a badly thought out pair of plans.
04-01-2025 3:57 PM
or they are just bad at what they do because this will have been in the pipeline for atleast a year and they knew about all this back when they decided to make selling free for people
04-01-2025 4:02 PM
Doing the same putting everything on and then most likely closing shop Feb after 15 years.
Like the reference, I will closing like Woolworths

I haven't sold anything since the beginning of December ( or purchased and will never again buy anything on here - sorry to my fave sellers , both private and business ) and just wondering whether to remove my listings completely and watch this play out; as I will not be using Simply shipping/delivery or whatever they want to call it for the buyer to choose a service that I cannot fulfil, or for my funds on my items sold ( chance would be a fine thing 😉 ) being held for an indefinite time. No, not happening.
Stressful, confusing, and eBay are taking an absolute liberty!
Thinking over all the new introductions and watching the downward landslide of eBay over the past couple of years... I actually have the belief that all this is about is " managing" YOU/US!
Edit.. spelling.
04-01-2025 4:07 PM
i removed mine because all current listings get automatically updated to the new simple delivery when it kicks in which beggars belief itself because when you make a listing from feb there may still be options to change for simple delivery but if they automatically change all current listings to that...they are then forcing their own settings and options onto sellers

Hi ,
one thing I am not clear about with the upcoming "Buyer Protection fees" - is it "Per Item" ??
If so , imagine buying 10 x £1 items from a private seller , suddenly you are faced with an
additional 4% (not a killer as a buyer ) BUT 10 x 75p is almost doubling the overall price of the
transaction - bad for both buyer and seller !!

I’m getting very disheartened, not to mention confused. So, when the changes come in, Will eBay automatically change all my prices? If I List something at £3.99, it will be displayed as a different, higher amount? So, if a prospective buyer contacts me re an offer or reduction, will I know what price they’re being shown?
Will the postage & packaging cost be included in the 4%? Why 75p extra added on? I’ve never had a despatch/delivery/as described issue in 20 years, but will be penalised now?
I’m really too old for all this rubbish. I feel as if I’ve been scolded and slapped down for trying to supplement my pension by selling off my inherited collections.
I thought I was doing really well…gradually selling things, getting amazing feedback etc. Now I realise I’m a waste of space to eBay.
