Thinking of selling expensive designer handbags on Ebay

Hi all, 

I have a couple of used expensive designer handbags I am thinking of selling on eBay between £700 and £2,500. I have been doing some research first before listing them and not sure what to make of it. 

Obviously they will need to go through the authenticity guarantee, but I've heard the seller can still return it even after this and listing it as no returns. What's to stop them replacing it with a fake and sending it back. Or damaging the item etc... 

What are the pros and cons please? 

Really want advise as it could be a lot of money to lose.

As a private seller I stick with the mantra 'never sell anything you cannot afford to lose'.

Buyers can't return the item if it's been authenticated and cleared as matching the listing description and photos.

I had a clear out of some expensive used designer items before Authenticity Guarantee came into effect and it always seemed dangerous to me. And people didn't want to pay a solid price because they were uncertain about the authenticity. Also these types of items do tend to attract difficult buyers, as you may have seen in recent Selling posts. Now that AG is available I would feel better about selling something like Louis Vuitton, Hermes, or Prada.

That said, I would do it only for your items eligible for AG. These are over £500, sold only to UK buyers, and must be one of these brands:

Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Mulberry, Hermes, Saint Laurent, Celine, Dior, Prada, Fendi, Goyard, Burberry, Chloe, Valentino, Givenchy, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, MCM, Salvatore Ferragamo, LOEWE, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, Alexander McQueen, The Row, Off-White, Jimmy Choo, Tom Ford, Bvlgari, Stella McCartney, Proenza Schouler, Delvaux, Miu Miu, Mark Cross, Marni, Lanvin, Jil Sander, Judith Leiber, Christian Louboutin, Alexander Wang and Balmain.

The only big AG downside, is that you must describe the condition very carefully. AG will refuse your item if you don't. Also keep in mind that the AG 'experts' sometimes refuse genuine items that they are not able to authenticate, so you might lose a sale. Good luck with your clear out!

My personal advice is don't do it. In your position I would use a reputable specialist 'bricks and mortar' auction house.  You would pay reasonably high fees but it is worth that to be able to sleep soundly at night. Let them take all of the stress and strain, that's what you will be paying them for.

Another thing is that having a low feedback record,which indicates someone not Au fait with selling you would be a scammers dream.

Additionally they could damage or swap the bag and you would be up the creek. Don't be blinded by the thought of pound notes on eBay.

Don’t know if this helps ….  Couple of years ago we had a group of very expensive designer handbags each in an excellent condition.  
Did do our due diligence and looked at prices of same name and same style handbags that did sell on eBay at ridiculously low prices.

However we decided to place said items at a local auction house when the ideal category sale came along.  We took their advice and listed them as separate lots within this sale. Even allowing for their selling fees, we achieved FIVE times the prices we had previously noted on eBay.

Yes, we may have been lucky.  
However with the current nonsense existing on eBay especially Post and despatch requirements, can I suggest you seriously look at other platforms and outlets.

Goggle “designer handbags” would be a starting point.

I would advise against selling these expensive items on ebay, you have too much to lose and there are many 'professional' scammers out there who know every trick in the book. Much better to sell in a legitimate auction house in your local area.
