Some recent observations

Ok, I've been on eBay as a buyer and seller (private) for about 26 years.

As a response to eBay's mess across a range of issues I decided to close all my auctions about 2-3 months ago.

It's had some interesting results, for me, it feels liberating not worrying about eBay's little tweaks or whether a parcel has arrived and so forth.  I have not missed the pressure of trying to sell my stuff.  Lots of things I was selling I've since given away to people who needed them or to charity.

On the reverse of the coin, I'm buying way less on eBay.  I shop around and I'm getting things that I want cheaper elsewhere.  I had a large list of sellers I followed and bought from.  I've been deleting them, I'm now down to one business  seller and I've just made my last purchase from them.

I still browse things that I use or collect and I'm dumb founded at some of the prices being asked for new and second hand goods.  Not only that, but there is less variety and choice.

So, I wonder where the sellers and buyers are going.

I recently attended my first boot fair for several years, not only was it enjoyable I got items I wanted at a fair price.

eBay used to be fun, filled with almost anything you could want at a good price.  No longer.

Re: Some recent observations

I was looking at buying something on eBay just this week and price showed the buyers protection tax added to my purchase, so I didn’t buy the item. Why should I pay a fee to buy something?

Madness!

In the end I bought same item in Amazon and paid slightly more, but still felt better than paying a buyers fee to eBay 😀

Re: Some recent observations

It did, it used to be a lot of fun - I had what could only be termed as an addiction to eBay - at one point, I had a good 10-15 auctions that I was bidding on day-to-day. The rush of adrenaline as the clock counted down... We were all in it for the same thing, as buyers - to get a few bargains from a lovely human being, that cared to carefully wrap your items, despatch on time, and often had even included a wee note to say thanks - when I'd already been wildly, deliriously happy with my purchases, that was the cherry on top. There was that courtesy. Even the communication has dropped off - so many sellers nowadays don't respond to queries pre-auction, which I find infuriating; in the past, you could almost guarantee a seller would be hovering in messages, ready to respond to you before the auction ended, which, in that flurry of activity, only added to the rush. Even sellers of Buy-It-Now items, don't bother to respond to simple things like despatch queries - if I can't be certain of the courier, I am not going to buy. Royal Mail local-to-me are abysmal, so untrustworthy, I much prefer to avoid them. Also, the details about an item are not as complete as they once were, yet more simple information not forthcoming, like an underarm-to-underarm measurement (crucial when talking about ladies' garments, as we are not all the same size up-top); it's not there, has to be asked for, only for the question to be ignored. As eBay have made it harder for the private seller, the knock-on effect is their lack of interest in engaging with buyers. This is most telling in the widespread use now of AI-generated item specifics, which are anything but - its intelligence is indeed, artificial! The personal touch, as alluded by others to be eBay's humanity, has been lost.

The fact the directors listed are in their 40s, is an eye-opener - so, these people should have the apt knowledge and understanding, of how eBay used to work, an understanding that it did work, very well, for all of us - it seems this extreme departure from how it was, has been consciously driven, by people that do not appreciate, much less care, what eBay used to be, yet also have little-to-no idea, of what they want it to be now. They clearly do not have focus groups, made up of sellers and buyers, where proposed changes are suggested, their viability discussed, problems foreseen negotiated, and a solution that suits all is agreed upon - not landed on us out of nowhere, with us expected to just roll with it. I doubt any of it is politically-motivated, but I fail to see how these changes could be financially-motivated, when it's clear to all, that it is having a negative impact on sales, thus, revenue. The only thing I can surmise from the retention of seller's funds, until delivery has been confirmed, is it's an effort to earn extra interest on accrued funds in their accounts. That's callous, greedy and a massive turn-off, especially when considering, that most sellers use their revenue to help pay their household bills, not to purchase a fortnight in the Seychelles.

Con te partiro - indeed.

On another thread, we were discussing that eBay has lost its 'humanity'.

In today's weekly chat a business seller quite rightly asked why a competitor shop was being promoted at the top of their own shop listings for which they are paying ebay a fee to host. The answer was essentially 'here's the policy of that service we sell' with no recognition that what they are doing is frankly immoral.

They act with no sense of decency.

Basically whatever happens on this website is OK as long as it's to ebay's commercial advantage and they can persuade enough people to put up with it and not leave.

It's a cess pit of the lowest ethical standards.

Yes, I noticed that too.

They answered the question, but deliberately missed the rather obvious point behind it.

I like it when they say we will add your account to the tech ticket for those affected when x y z problem is affecting everybody , making it seem like isolated incidents

Re: Some recent observations

Off topic but under the emerald observation banner I noticed today , you know how eBay like to keep changing things, presumably to make things easier

when you click on someone else’s listing and you want to sell one like this, it’s now called “sell for free” not sell one like this or sell similar or something that makes sense or is connected to what you want to do

its called “sell for free “

…yes, I know I can

disjointed. Is that the word in looking for ?

fascinating hey?
