Is Simple Delivery mandatory now ? used to be able to select custom postage option but it’s not available now. Just tried listing and Simple Delivery is the only option for postage

No problem, I was replying to another user.

I red a case here where the item was damaged so the buyer selected not as described instead and won, after they tried to have damage claim and failed, so he ignored what the seller told him and did not as instructed. So even with simple delivery everything can be wrong.
Ebay doesn't, but the Court does.

Actually I was following a train of replies from you to me and me to you, but I guess you might have made the reply to me a broader reply to all.

I made a claim for an item damaged during delivery (simple delivery), the seller wasn't actually sure what I should do (as she said, in the past she would have contacted the courier to make a claim) so couldn't instruct me. The process to return due to damage does have to begin with "item not as described", which is confusing, there is no option "damaged by courier"; there are better options further down the process, but I decided to email eBay with the information including photos, because it wasn't crystal clear and they sorted it from my email and refunded me.

these absolute statements are not helpful, because eBay do help sellers, that is my experience. They might have a leaning towards the customer is always right, but it is not 100%. There does seem to be a push to make private sellers seem like professionals, just in the way eBay talk about sellers and talk to sellers, which doesn't help.

Hi
Its worth noting EBay never helps the seller, FACT
To be fair to Ebay (in spite of my earlier litany of complaints), on the only occasion under SD that a buyer of mine has reported non-arrival, Ebay refunded them immediately, with no cost or bad marks to me (although, slightly annoyingly, without even first asking me whether I might know why the item hadn't arrived).

My father had a buyer say an item not arrived and yes all completely done between buyer and eBay, no message from buyer to my father, just a message from eBay saying it was all going through.

Yes I had a first time buyer which I am always a bit dubious about. Item sent Royal Mail showed as delivered. I then had a message from ebay saying the buyer had contacted them about delivery. I heard nothing more after that.

That message buyers and sellers receive are misleading.
Receiving a ' the buyer has reached out to us..... ' does not mean the buyer is questioning the delivery status.
From some reason those truly vague messages are sent from eBay, when any message is sent to or from a buyer / seller.
Many are puzzled by this, it means, well it means.... nowt ! 🙄

I am no fan of SD, no printer, no smartphone, have to screenshoot QR code and remember to take tablet with me to post office. But I must say, yesterday I sold 5 buy it nows to the same buyer ( all jars, small parcels at SD £3.38 each), they were combined and eBay charged buyer £6.65, medium parcel which was completely right.

Yes I get ' the buyer has reached out to us..... ' when I send a message to a buyer to confirm I have posted their parcel, confused the first time it happened.

Odd isn't it an yep, a tad confusing! 🙄 I bet many are puzzled sending messages off in a worry that the buyer 'reaching out' is requiring some assistance.
The message should be scrapped, it's helping no one, but my little voice of reason, would not be heard in eBay Towers US of A ! 🤗

combined postage worked for buy it now? It hasn't for me, but not had two or more sales together since early december

First in memory to have more than I sale!! Don't know how the combined worked, I woke up and there it was. I wondered if the buyer put all 5 in her basket and that did it, (it was right, that's all I worried about, I didn't want buyer charged 5x postage)! I don't think I have any ticks on combined postage, how would I know?

I hate 'reach out to' anyway!

'I hate 'reach out to' anyway!'
Same here! It sounds like someone trying to make contact from beyond the grave... 👻 or that your buyer is in some sort of desperate state and begging for your help...!
