'Simple Delivery' failed, now a test case - worried

Private Seller here, I sold a gold sovereign for £590 on ebay and was forced to use "Simple Delivery" as you all know. Both ebay and RM tracking show it as delivered, RM say they left it in a safe place and uploaded a photo. Seller says package has gone "missing" and he will raise a case with ebay!

I see some help pages on ebay saying I am covered for the loss but another page says gold is in the excluded list for 'Simple Delivery' even though they do not offer any other postal service.

Who is going to end up eating the loss I wonder?

Cheers

Rich

Perhaps that's WHY they accepted the claim?

Not that I'm suggesting that the Insurance industry is the biggest legalised con game in the country.

Yes, I think you're right there. My thoughts too. I've always forked out for car repairs/broken drain repairs myself when I've factored in the excess and the next 5 years of more expensive insurance.

I agree. But the police don't make that their concern.

although i agree with you in principle, I think officer cleaners do a good job and should not be even in the same sentence as this lot!

That sounds like a whole new career choice.  I think the Met could use some officer cleaners.

What has surprised me is when purchasing a home with a mortgage nowadays.......buildings insurance is no longer included in mortgage repayments and has to be paid separately.  Yes its expensive as there are about 6 different tiers of cover.

We found that buildings and contents tend to be separate insurances and not combined 😞

Excesses are around £500

What was wrong about the label? As long as the packet is within the maximum weight/size limit, the Post Office or Evri point "should" accept it.

e.g. If you bought a label and the price charged matched the up to 1kg medium parcel rate, but when packed the parcel was 1.2kg; the label is still valid and you don't need to pay any additional postage.
(I would expect ebay to catch on to anyone who was deliberately trying to fool the system [e.g. repeatedly], as some stage.)

EBay are re-opening the door to scammers in a big way.... Scammer buys an item that will not fit through a letter box... Does not answer the door to the delivery man..... Delivery man leaves item in "safe place".... Scammer claims the item never arrived or stolen from safe space.

Infact scammer buyer and a scammer seller could easily defraud ebay... Simple delivery high value item... Scammer Seller needs some photos and a description, scammer buyer who is working with the scammer seller... Buys the item,  waits for delivery, does not answer the door, item left in "safe place"..... Ebay scammed.

IMHO..... Ebay just add a signed for option.....let's be honest, how many years has signed for... Been the best choice.... Especially for high value items.... IMHO very niave of ebay... Very unsettling for sellers.

Simple Delivery hasn't changed anything in regards to doorstep thefts.  The Simple Delivery terms only apply whilst the item is actually in transit so unless eBay deems the 'Safeplace' to not be safe then the buyer's claim will not be upheld.

In my opinion using a 'Signed for' option serves very little purpose as anyone can effectively sign for it, including the delivery driver.   Using Royal Mail Special Delivery is a different matter as the item has to be physically handed to someone at the recipients address.

RM24 / 48 Tracked and signed for works well, as detailed so does special delivery.

But simply delivery has at the very least opened the door wider to scammers.... Because the average person selling an expensive item, would pick a signed for option.... Now private sellers will be targeted even more.... Sad but true, any scammer can see the wide open holes in the simpleton delivery service.

I don't agree that it's opened some new door for scammers, I'd guess that it works the same way as a buyer issuing a chargeback, it goes down on your record - it'll be noted that it was reported by the buyer as missing after delivery and a refund issued (in the case of missing packages, presumably the address will be flagged by the courier/Royal Mail). eBay will also have a record.

It is not a new door, it is the same door that has been an issue for many many years... Which has been push wide open, A signed for option, closed the door a little further.... For eBay this is not rocket science, it is simple.... Sadly not part of "simple delivery".

If eBay are totally true to their word and they will take the financial hit on "missing" parcels, then wow, but who is paying for that... I wonder how low before business seller fees go up, look at the promo fees policy rewrite....

IMHO make it fee free for everyone, add a signed for service, it won't stop all the scammers... But signed for, 100 percent helps.... Safe place lol yeah next to the bin, behind a plant pot...

I'm not sure if people are aware, but the electronic 'signature box' the Royal Mail delivery staff use these days also records the GPS location when the signature is entered.  Thus providing a much 'stronger' argument that an item was delivered and signed for at a specific locations/address.

For me it's just simply a no brainer, I will NOT be sending high value electronics items unless I can send them Special Delivery, that's what I've done for over a decade and simply put I'm not risking items worth hundreds of pounds with even the small risk that a parcel is left on a doorstep and an argument then ensues about what is/isn't a safespace, what is/isn't covered by the E-Bay recompense scheme, what is/isn't a valid 'delivery' (signature vs photo of parcel left in some nebulous place).

Even the potential thought of ending up in a dispute argument with E-Bay/Couriers, about the above, where E-Bay are the judge and jury about what is 'right' or 'allowed', when there's still no absolutely clear documentation about whether E-Bay are the principal or the Agent on behalf of the couriers, and what really is and isn't covered and what exclusions apply, therefore who's legally liable is just a nonsense.

Anyone who shipped say a £600+ Tablet or Laptop is just inviting a potential loss using Simple Delivery, whereas with Special Delivery they'll be able to sleep well.

I haven't used signed for as a seller for years. I find the tracked options are sufficient.
As a buyer, I can't remember the last time I had to sign - pre covid, certainly.

Who is paying for compensation on 'missing' items? The buyer when they pay the postage cost. Ebay will be raking it in, as they are charging pretty near actual cost for SD labels, BUT their deals with RM & Evri mean that they will only be paying a fraction of that cost. So they will have a nice little pot of savings that they can use to pay for missing items. Though I would imagine this will only be for items that don't show as delivered, not for items delivered, but then going missing.

Also, if the seller has selected to include Evri in SD, there is an option for the buyer to pay cheaper postage and have the item delivered to a nearby Evri collection shop, which works very well if you have one near you and are out all day.

I guess it depends on the value and size of the items the seller, sells... Imagine a Mac book.... IPhone... Gold coin.... Wow you let them just go tracked and be happy for them to be left behind a plant pot? Next to thd bin? You know the regular "safe places"?

If selling things that fit through a letter box, sub £150....then yeah I get it....

I think that for every new change there will be people who look to try to exploit it. In this situation a gold coin, a very tempting item to defraud, but we don't know the buyers history or the address details so it's hard to come to a concrete conclusion.

I wouldn't be selling those items on here in the first place!
Also, this thread was about Simple Delivery, which only affects private sellers (at the moment). A private seller is only going to have something like a phone or a Mac book for sale once a year at the most. If a seller has lots of phones/mac books for sale, then they are a business seller, and as such can send however they want.

Once a year or not.... Signed for delivery is important.

Whatever your views on what should or not have been done, the undeniable truth is that it wouldn't have happened at all if Ebay's ridiculously titled simple delivery didn't exist!!.

If SD was that good sellers would automatically use it, so make it optional and see what the outcome is !!

I think we all know that the result would leave SD indefensible !!
