Should requiring payment method trigger an automatic payment on auctions?

I have this setting enabled in buyer rules

'Require buyers to provide a payment method before they place a bid'

(here https://www.ebay.co.uk/bmgt/buyerrequirements)

My understanding was that should trigger an automatic payment 3 days after the end of an auction, but I can't find where I read that now, have I got that wrong?

No, you have the right of it. eBay introduced this optional Buyer rule to cut down on unpaid auction wins.

For those unfamiliar a shortcut to access is:

Seller Hub > Shortcuts > Block Bidders > Buyer Rules then tick first box.

Thanks, that's what I had understood should be happening, but a few times recently it hasn't and ebay customer services didn't seem to be aware of any automatic payment functionality and just said to cancel as unpaid.

Do you know if there's a link anywhere explaining how this should work?

For the buyer the payment will be taken automatically as soon as the auction ends or it did for me when a seller had it enabled.

Re: Should requiring payment method trigger an automatic payment on auctions?

This is still happening to me, it seems like the common denominator is 0 feedback buyers bidding on auctions, but I wonder if this policy is still in effect at all?

I found this article about it from last year

https://www.valueaddedresource.net/ebay-quietly-removes-payment-method-required-for-auctions/

@valueaddedresource just tagging you on the off-chance you may have any idea what the current policy is please?

Thanks for the tag @wellingnorth .

Your question just led me to find an interesting difference between US and UK on the buyer requirement settings page.

For the US if you click the little i in the circle for the payment method required before bidding option it says: "If selected, we’ll automatically process payments for auctions when possible."

And that is in line with what I've seen being the case for US sellers who select it - it is applied on some buyers but not others and it's not always clear why.

For example, last year one seller had their immediate payment required for offers setting overridden on a transaction and was told by support it was because the buyer was considered a "trusted buyer."

eBay also introduced "shop more ship together" as a test last year and recently announced it had been extended, allowing auction buyers to delay the payment for up to 7 days to allow time to find additional item from the seller and get combined shipping.

https://community.ebay.com/t5/Announcements/Exciting-News-for-Auction-Sellers-Who-Offer-Combined-Shi...

Interestingly, when I look at the buyer requirement settings when signed in on .co.uk, it doesn't have the same hedging language about applying the setting "when possible."

But that doesn't necessarily mean the same things don't apply in the UK - it's still entirely possible that eBay may simply decide not to honor/enforce those settings for some buyers for whatever reason and it could also be possible they might be expanding "shop more ship together" to the UK as well.

And I've also anecdotally heard from some sellers that it could be that the buyer was asked to provide a payment method up front and the initial authorization may have been successful, but then when the auction ends the final payment isn't able to go through for some reason - could be not enough funds, rejected for security reasons etc - so then the order sits in unpaid.

Sorry I don't have anything more definitive than that, but hope it helps!

Re: Should requiring payment method trigger an automatic payment on auctions?

Thank you, that's interesting and helpful. I asked customer services on chat about this today and they were a bit unsure and are supposedly going to get back to me about it.

I think you're right if that if it is applying at all there are some circumstances when it isn't. It makes me wonder if it's sensible to have it ticked really as I'm still ending up with occasional non-paying bidders and I imagine some people will be put off bidding entirely because of it (nothing's showing in the Buyer requirements activity log but I'm not sure if this would display there)
